The House of Valentino's 50 Fashionable Years

The remarkable 50-year career of Valentino, founder of the first couture house to be recognized by the French government outside of Paris, is given the coffee table treatment in a lavish new book, Valentino: Themes and Variations (Rizzoli, $75).

The tome on Rome-based Valentino Garavani is published in association with a prestigious exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, curated by the author, Pamela Golbin. The book focuses on the designer's haute couture creations, culminating in his brilliant Paris presentation last January.

"I have always considered my work as the one of a writer," Valentino notes in the foreword. "Over the years I wrote only one story, the one of my style, where each collection represents a single chapter, with all its emotions, ideas and motifs. The looks may change with every chapter, but the main characters are the same, as are the people and things that inspire me."

Angela and Isabeli Vamp for Valentino

Mega model Isabeli Fontana is really on a roll this season. As we reported previously, the Brazilian bombshell stars in the new Versace campaign with Natalia Vodianova shot by Mario Testino, as well as the Roberto Cavalli campaign based on Luchino Visconti's 1963 film Il Gattopardo. Now she has also landed the fall Valentino campaign along with fellow stunner Angela Lindvall (at right, above, who also appears for Cavalli), shot by Peter Lindbergh in Paris. Gisele had better watch her back.

Isabeli and Natalia Heat Up Versace for Fall

Versace has tapped two of modeling's most beautiful faces for its new Fall ad campaign shot by famed photographer Mario Testino. Russian knockout Natalia Vodianova (foreground) and Brazilian stunner Isabeli Fontana star in the ads which feature Versace's eye-popping new line of handbags, clothing and accessories. Fontana is having an especially good season campaign-wise. As we reported last month, she also stars in Roberto Cavalli's theatrical new ads as well those of Valentino. See the gallery for more pix from the campaign.

Valentino, Color-Block Gown

Valentino is among the world's most famous haute couture designers, known for stunning gowns that can be seen at red carpet events, black tie galas and high society soirees. The Color-Block Gown is a fresh and flirty piece, from the Spring 2008 collection. Made in Italy, of pure crepe silk, this strapless dress has an empire waist and flowy layers of pink purple and yellow. Bergdorf Goodman is among the many high end stores worldwide that carries Valentino couture, the Color Block Gown retails for $8,780.

Valentino Introduces New Menswear Designer

The Italian House of Valentino has a new face leading the menswear line. Ferruccio Pozzoni has worked for Prada and Brioni over the years but his first collection for Valentino will be presented on January 18th during a show in Paris. With Valentino pushing 75 years of age it is probably smart to line up his predecessors now -- gives him more time to enjoy the high life and not work so hard. After all, if you were a fashion design icon wouldn't you have places to go and people to see? Let's just hope they don't change the name to Pozzoni -- it just doesn't have the same ring to it.

David Beckham Buys Victoria A Book For Christmas

A few weeks ago, we learned that Victoria Beckham had bought her kids a Neiman Marcus treehouse for Christmas, now The Sun reports that David Beckham has bought his wife a book for Christmas. Now a book may not sound like much of a present, especially for Victoria, who, although she has authored a couple of books, famously claimed in 2005 never to have read one, but this is no ordinary book. David bought Victoria Una Grande Storia Italiana - Valentino Garavani, a fabulous new book from Taschen which celebrates the designer. The book comes in a silk-covered clamshell box that is tinted in Valentino red. Inside, the 738-page book includes drawings, magazine shoots, advertisements, portraits of Valentino, and documentary photographs. The text includes Vanity Fair writer Matt Tyrnauer's interviews with twenty of Valentino's collaborators and friends and a tribute to Valentino by fashion writer Suzy Menkes. The Collector's Edition is limited to 2,000 individually numbered copies, each signed by Valentino and sells for $1,000. At least if Victoria doesn't read it she can check out the pretty pictures.

Valentino Nuage Bow Shopping Bag, Handbag of the Day

I normally wouldn't go for a shimmery bronze colored bag, but the soft style of this one is quite attractive. I think it is the casually tied bow on the side that takes things down and notch and makes me kind of like it. It looks comfortable and soft and at 11¼"H x 17"W x 7"D, it's a good size for every day use. It closes with a magnetic snap at the top and has two interior pockets. $1895.

Valentino's Fashionable New Book

've seen high-priced books from Gucci and Chanel recently and now Valentino gets the deluxe treatment. Una Grande Storia Italiana - Valentino Garavani is a new book from Taschen. The book comes in a silk-covered clamshell box that is tinted in Valentino red. Inside, the 738-page book includes drawings, magazine shoots, advertisements, portraits of Valentino, and documentary photographs. Valentino Kid Laminato Handbag, Handbag of the Day

Yet another metallic bag for spring! This time, we're looking at Valentino's Kid Laminato Handbag, which is made of supple leather that has been finished with a nickel-tone metallic sheen, which has a warm, almost pinkish, cast to it, setting it apart from some of the more harshly metallic bags out there. The hardware is gold, including the signature V adorning the tab closure running over the bag's top zipper and underneath the rolled leather top handles. Inside, the lining is canvas and has one zippered pocket to keep your small items secure inside the large purse. It measures 11"H x 17"W x 6"D. Price: $1,695.

Valentino Pink Floral Leather Bag, Handbag of the Day

I couldn't find the official name for this bag beyond the boring "medium leather bag" description, but it really deserved a mention here. The Valentino bag is soft and romantic, made of a mauve/pink suede with a leather shoulder strap and flap closure, which add a bit of a structured look to the purse. The appliqued floral patterns are unusually decorative, with three dimensional flowers that spring out from the bag as though planted there. It is easy to picture it making an appearance at a summer wedding, a garden cocktail party or even a work function, dressing up a neutral beige or cream ensemble. Price: $874.

Valentino Belt

The days of low rise seem to finally be in defeat and the waistline is returning. This dramatic tasseled sash from Valentino has a look that is reminiscent of a Japanese obi and draws all the attention to your middle. It is leather with embroidered flowers and sells for $2150.

Red Valentino Watch

This red watch from Valentino is a gorgeous slice of oo-la-la. The thick Valentino-red band is lizard that has been treated to look like shark skin. The case is a wide rectangular Swarovskl-studded design of red and white crystals. More wrist candy than actually timepiece (such a tiny face with such tiny hands), it sells for $500.

Valentino Peacock Bag

The new Valentino Spring line has been released. The showstopper of the collection is this Valentino shoulder bag made of chocolate suede with teal/turquoise/lime/yellow peacock embroidery. The bag has gold napa leather trim and a double shoulder strip. The distinctive Valentino logo is on the front on a wooden plate with crystal accents. The bag costs $1,250 and should ship in early April.
