It seems like every time I write about a Valentino handbag it typically has a touch of romantic fancy about it. Ski in Royal Style in Courchevel

When Prince William took his girlfriend Kate Middleton on a skiing vacation last winter, there was little doubt about where they would go; Courchevel in the French Alps has a fair claim to the title of world's most exclusive ski destination, and it's become increasingly popular with Russian oligarchs looking to rub elbows with royalty as well. The luxe five-star Hotel de Charme Les Airelles (above), which recently unveiled a $50 million renovation, is the place to stay for those who don't have private villas. The elite resort has only 37 guestrooms and 14 suites, as well as a 7,000-sq.-ft. spa, an exclusive Valentino boutique, and three eateries including the sumptuous Pierre Gagnaire Restaurant. For the ultimate in luxury, the 5,900-sq.-ft. Apartment Suite on the stop floor features four bedrooms all with private baths, a private spa, screening room and a 1,600-sq.-ft. terrace with an outdoor Jacuzzi and a view of the coveted Courchevel 1850 (referring to the elevation) slopes.

Valentino Buisson Rose Tote, Handbag of the Day

handbagUber-feminine and dripping with romance, the Buisson Rose Tote from Valentino would be a dead ringer for Valentine's Day but since it is available now I'm picturing it on the arm of a well-to-do heiress at a prestigious horse race. Composed of red satin rosettes with burgundy centers and crystal studded petals, this floral interpretation is complete with matching tonal patent leather top handles, silvertone hardware, red satin lining and protective feet. If your horse is the winner at the race you could both be sporting a carpet of red roses -- I wonder if Valentino makes a matching hat? (14" x 16" x 5" for $3,995)

Totes aren't really party pieces but this one is so pretty and fabulous I would probably find an excuse to make it work as one. It's the Kaliedo Gem-Embellished Tote by Valentino, and they weren't messing around with the gems -- not a single visible surface is gemless aside from the shoulder strap, handles, and designer-embossed logo plaque. This glitzy number will make daily errands a glamorous occasion in graduated clear to brown faceted gem embellishments and a dove gray satin lining. Valentino Petale Tote, Handbag of the Day

Valentino Petale ToteThe Valentino Petale Tote is yet another patent masterpiece featuring one of this season's biggest trends: a luscious leather rose.

This Italian leather tote is a good size -- 14"H x 14"W x 4"D. Beware, though, that means it's a lot of red and a very large flower. This purse is definitely only for the truly bold. This much red and a flower that big could easily go awry with the wrong outfit -- if you're unsure of what to pair it with, play it safe and purchase the bag in black or taupe.

We'd love to see this bag with white, black, or gray, but beware the blues, as you might start to look a little aggressively patriotic. It is a bag for the opera, a gala, brunch, or maybe a day at the museum, and will turn heads wherever it goes. Not for the shy wallflowers among us!

Valentino Bow Tote, Handbag of the Day

Valentino Bow Tote, Handbag of the DayThe Valentino Bow Tote is an instant classic.

It's rare that we come across a bag that is so effortlessly elegant, and so shamelessly dressy that it would look almost silly with a pair of jeans. The bag is medium-sized, at 7 1/2"H X 14"W X 6 1/2"D (not quite big enough for a sheet of paper), and features a gorgeous Italian leather bow.

We love the 80s feel of the bow, and feel almost certain that someone was carrying this at that fancy party in the movie "Adventures in Babysitting" or that Richard Gere totally gave this to Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman" -- except that this is a brand new bag from Valentino. Still, we'd love to see it paired with a tight dress and a sky-high pair of black patent heels.

Valentino Vertigo SatchelThe Valentino Vertigo Satchel is an excellent, demure purse with a lot of character.

This red nappa leather bag is artfully pleated and folded into a basic shape -- with the effect of looking anything but basic. This is one of those bags you can carry with absolutely anything, and it's okay if you do, because nappa leather looks better with a little wear.

We love the dainty goldtone hardware, the double zipper top, and the generous size (11"H X 13 1/2"W X 6 1/2"D). It's rare to find a purse this large with this level of detail that doesn't look overdone. We have a feeling this new Valentino will be selling out quickly.

The black tote is covered with flowers for a look that is striking from a distance and fascinating once you get a closer view. The design peps up the basic tote style which is a 14" by 14" square that is 4" deep. The tote has goldtone hardware and there is also a detachable shoulder strap. This Valentino creation is barely recognizable as a handbag at first glance, depending on what you're wearing it might just come off as a ruffled accent on your outfit. Ruffles abound in supple nappa lambskin in a solid shade of slate gray. Leather swims in loose swirls around a large spiral rose in the center, plus woven detail secures the double handles and the interior is lined in pretty black silk. I think I love it most because of its vibrant, deep colors and feminine energy -- it's a bag that manages to make a statement without being super bright or obnoxious. It's actually smaller than it looks, measuring in at only 12" wide, and it's covered completely in dark purple and rich pink fabric rosettes with brown leather handles and a signature logo plate on the front. $1,950

This lovely, warm biscotti colored Italian leather purse is carefully stitched with the classic loops and swoops you'd see on a saddle. The Valentino signature "V" logo is encrusted in Swarovski crystals, which are balanced and enhanced by the gleam of the black patent leather handles -- perfect with jeans and black patent shoes.

The patent handles have a longer-than-usual drop of 7.5", and the whole purse has a generous size. While the purse does have an inside zip pocket, the magnetic closure (beneath the logo accent) is surprisingly all that holds it closed. The lack of a top zipper keeps the western style cohesive and clean.

Is it a coincidence that Valentine's Day is around the corner and Valentino has created a romantic handbag in time for the rose-centered holiday? The Patent Petal Dome Bag available in both white and black patent leather isn't overstating the bloom of love but certainly hints at one expensive floral gift which retails for $2,195.
