Luxist Guest Post: George Miliotes, Master Sommelier at The Capital Grille Picks Valentine's Day Wines

capital grille wine picksWine can be an important part of your Valentine's Day celebration but choosing the right wine is a combination of making sure that the wine matches both the food and your beloved's preferences. George Miliotes, Master Sommelier at The Capital Grille restaurant group, offers up a few recommendations and romantic finds – including basic food pairing advice to help ease the course of true oenological love.

Best Wines for Romance
There is no magic wine that does it for everyone, as tastes vary. Find out what type of wine your special someone likes. Then research and find the best of that type. Come armed to impress with the story of why the wine is the best of its type so you can wow your loved one with the knowledge as you drink it. Nothing says romance like I care enough to get you the best. Few suggestions (across price points) are below:

If they love Red, my faves are:

  • LOW ON DOUGH: Juan Gil Monastrell...there is no other red wine as flavorful for less than $20 and it pairs amazingly well with a Filet.
  • IN THE MIDDLE: De Toren Z $40...Merlot/Cab blend at a world class flavor level. Partial to a Delmonico? The plush yet strong tannins here will match perfectly with the marbled richness of the steak.
  • IN THE MOOD TO SPLURGE: Lewis Cellars 2007 Reserve Cabernet ...can run $175+ depending upon market. Is there anything more American than a dry aged New York strip sirloin? Have this great American Cabernet with the great American steak.

David Yurman "The Classic" Ladies Watch

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Luxury Shopping

David Yurman
Still haven't gotten her something for Valentine's day (I know I haven't)? Well here is another option that shouldn't be too tough to find given David Yurman's pretty good distribution. This is "The Classic" watch that comes in 30mm wide and 38mm wide styles in steel or gold, or steel and gold. The name could be better (no idea who they trademarked "Classic"), but the styling is is certainly acceptable. The easy-to-read dial comes with optional diamonds (either all or mixed with Roman numerals), and is mother of pearl. Inside the watch is a Swiss quartz movement, and you can get the watch with the steel bracelet (my choice) or with an alligator strap. Price as seen is $2,600.

Victoria's Secret Supermodels Show Off Valentine's Day Favorites

Victoria's Secret Supermodels
What would Valentine's Day be without a heart-racing roundup of sexy lingerie from the Victoria's Secret supermodels? This season the mega-brand brought in Adriana Lima (above), Candice Swanepoel, Lily Aldridge and Erin Heatherton to show off some favorites, featuring the pneumatic new Love Push-Up Collection with some serious cleavage-enhancing capabilities in various silhouettes. No brassiere on Earth is going to turn you into Adriana, but you can always dream, or just enjoy the show. There's also a killer corset for good measure. Meanwhile Victoria's Secret also just debuted a new frgrance, called NOIR love me, as an alternative offering. Check out the gallery for gift ideas and so forth.

Frederique Constant Amour Heart Beat Ladies Automatic Watch

Frederique Constant Amour Heart Beat Ladies Automatic Watch
Because "love" wasn't enough? For 2011, Frederique Constant has re-done the look of their "Love" ladies watch for V-day. The previous model had the "O" in "Love" opened up to a view of the automatic movement's escapement. Now "love" is in a different language with the "O" of "Amour" turned into a heart and offering the same view into the movement. A selling point for this new Amour Heart Beat Ladies watch is that Frederiuque Constant brand ambassador and Taiwanese movie-star ShuQi is said to have designed the new watch. She better stick to acting as this model isn't too different than the outgoing one save for the different word on the dial. More diamonds though maybe.

The case (available in steel or rose gold plated) is 34mm wide with a Swiss automatic movement, mother-of-pearl or otherwise decorated dials, and comes in three amusingly named color tones. You can get the Amour Heart Beat watches in "opaline white, sweet vanilla, or gourmet chocolate." Seriously, these are almost humorously targeted towards only women. The straps are either leather or satin. Frederique Constant will donate some money to the International Children's Heart Foundation with the sale of each watch. Look for these out now.

Macy's Culinary Council's Wolfgang Puck offers favorite recipe for Valentine's Day

Macy's Culinary Council, which includes some of the best known chefs in the world from Wolfgang Puck (above) to Nancy Silverton, have offered us some of their favorite recipes for celebrating Valentine's Day. From a goat cheese fondue to a butterscotch budino with caramel sauce, these recipes are bound to make your Valentine's Day entertaining a special one.

Chef Rick Bayless suggests serving his famous "Red Hot Margaritas". The recipe calls for Ferrara Red Hots, which provide the kick. The chef's recipe for the limeade can be used for other types of margaritas as well. "We were trying to come up with a margarita for our winter bar menu at Frontera Grill," says Bayless. "So we were thinking mulling spices...bright red color... and then someone said it: 'The drink should taste like a liquid version of those Red Hot candies.' Bingo."

Chef Takashi Yagihashi, proprietor of Takashi Restaurant in Chicago, suggests making his intensely flavorful Curry Kaffir Lime Soup recipe, which is best served to guests in little cupfuls. It can be passed as an appetizer, with colorful garnishes on toothpicks for a complete dipping and sipping experience. Kaffir lime leaves gives this soup its floral aroma and flavor.

Josephine de la Baume is New Agent Provocateur Star
With Valentine's Day in the offing luxe British lingerie brand Agent Provocateur has unveiled its new ad campaign for spring starring sultry French sexpot Josephine de la Baume. Set in a seedy hotel room, the images were shot by Swedish photographer Johan Renck. De la Baume, an actress and singer, is the girlfriend of musician Mark Ronson, who was recently seen partying the night away with Kate Moss at the Ritz in Paris. "Johan Renck takes a collection and an idea, and combines the two in an explosion of sexuality, playfulness and sense of humour," Agent Provovateur creative director Sarah Shotton tells Vogue UK. "Renck translates our desires into a campaign that shows our lingerie in a fantasy of real life. Josephine de la Baume is the ultimate Agent Provocateur woman: witty, gorgeous and confident. She is a natural femme fatale, a quality which effortlessly translates on screen." Check out the gallery for more pix and click here to watch a voyeuristic video.

Luxe Lingerie from La Perla for Valentine's Day

Luxe Lingerie from La Perla for Valentine's Day
Luxe Italian lingerie brand La Perla has something for everyone this Valentine's Day, from its latest haute couture collaboration to the traditional luxury classics the brand is famed for. As we first reported earlier this year the famed firm, founded in Bologna in 1954, teamed up with French designer Jean Paul Gaultier on a vintage-inspired capsule collection for the fashion-forward. Prices for the limited edition range from $600 - $1,200. Equally appealing are La Perla's classic creations (above), many of which are made with ultra-luxe leaver's lace. The name "leavers" derives from the antique looms used to create this lace in an extremely complex and costly manufacturing process. La Perla uses the original looms as they're the only machines capable of working with a high number of threads, reproducing the intricate work of handmade lace. The result is distinguished by extremely fine detail. Check out the gallery for an eyeful.

Five Smokin' Valentine's Day Gifts for Cigar Lovers

Valentine's Day cigar gift

Cigar smokers should be the easiest people in your life for whom to shop, with a clear interest that is easy to address. But, if you want to go the extra mile, finding that perfect present can be daunting. This is especially the case on Valentine's Day, when you really want to send a loving, thoughtful message. Obviously, the smart move is to take the pressure off yourself, tell your loved one that he or she is in fact a loved one and celebrate what you have with each other.

Of course, we're rarely that easy on ourselves at this time of year!

If you have a cigar smoker in your life, here are five ideas from Vin Lee, CEO of the Beverly Hills Cigar Club, to make Valentine's Day a bit easier for you ... and a bit enjoyable for him or her:

1. S.T. Dupont Limited Edition Shaman Series Lighter: got a grand to burn, so to speak? This impressive piece will set you back $1,000, but it's sure to impress. The white pearlized lacquer with mother-of-pearl inlays is stunning, and whipping this lighter out to ignite a cigar is a clear sign of taste.

2. Bugatti 3 Chrome Satin/Chrome Polished Traditional Flame Lighter: this one won't hurt your wallet as much as the Shaman (at only $150), but it will nonetheless garner plenty of attention. And, it's one of Lee's favorites.

Her Valentine's Day set is a two-piece jewelry collection made from gunmetal with an enamel eye which symbolizes knowledge and inner vision. It also reminds me a bit of Victorian lover's jewelry which often featured the eye of the beloved worn as a brooch or ring.

The eye is framed within an abstract heart pierced by an arrow with elaborate feathers. The pendant is also encrusted with tiny cabochon pearls, rich purple enamel and Swarovski crystals. The pendant sells for £135 and the earrings are £95. The collection will be available to buy online and in store at: Vivienne Westwood, 44 Conduit Street, London W1S 2YL; www.viviennewestwood.com.
