Ulysse Nardin Classico Lady Watch

Complimenting the newer Ulysse Nardin men's collection of Classico watches, they have released a lady's version. This one has a diamond and jewel created exotic bird. It is supposed to be emotional, but I am not sure it is more than just a bit gaudy. In addition to the jewels the dial is made from a complex to make enamel. The 35mm wide case is in 18k white gold. While the design of the dial is a bit blase for me, I can't deny the jewelry-like effort involved in producing it. what I do like is the shape of the lugs and the crown with a ring of sapphires around it. The blue of the sapphires and the enamel melds nicely with blue alligator use for the strap (starting to get more popular these days).

Inside this ladies watch is an automatic movement with a decorated 22k gold rotor. It is visible though the caseback sapphire crystal, and is likely more impressive to see than the watch dial itself. All of the parts are in the right place and I am sure that with the next version Ulysse Nardin will supply the Classico Lady watch with more impressive dial imagery.

Ulysse Nardin Classico Watch

ulysse nardin classico
Seemingly following in the footsteps of Vacheron Constantin, Ulysse Nardin steps away from aggressive modern style watches with this throwback timepiece aptly named the Classico. Forget the cheesy, super market pasta sauce sounding name and you get three versions of a pretty decent watch. The 40mm wide case is done in either 18k rose or white gold, and is water resistant to 50 meters. Dial colors include silvered, black, or blue. Design is right out of your grandfather's heyday. If it suited his type well, how wrong can you go?

The watch has a good movement too. An in-house made UN caliber 815 automatic movement that has been COSC certified, with a solid 22k automatic rotor visible through the sapphire caseback window . Good thing it has a date as well. Some of these throw-back models are too minimalistic for my taste. I prefer a date on watches personally. Here the petite window is nicely framed in gold. The sunburst polish on the dial is a nice retro touch as well (also the lug design). Pleasing as well is the fact that the hands and luminant covered, and there are lume dots over the hour markers. The alligator straps are brown for the pictured version, while the black and blue dialed versions are matched to black and blue straps respectively. Should be available soon.

Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Camo Diver Watch

ulysse nardin maxi marineThis little number came out a few years ago, but a few are available floating around on the net. A watch like this is the very definition of fake militarism and merely attempted style. Apparently camouflage isn't out of style, at least where ever most Ulysse Nardin watches are sold. This limited edition of 50 pieces watch takes everything you know about the Maxi Marine Diver and tries to hide the dial! Naw, you can still see it. I must admit camouflage looks sorta cool, even on a watch, but more in a gimmicky sense. I simply can't stomach the idea of taking a luxury dive watch, and making just the dial (or any of it really) "camoued" out.

Ulysse Nardin tried to further "harden" the look by making 43mm wide case steel and black. If I didn't know better I would say the watch is cool - but only if you are a bad-boy type with an obese trust fund. Inside the watch is the Ulysse Nardin automatic caliber UN-26 movement with a power reserve indicator and subsidiary seconds hand. It also also been certified as a COSC chronometer. The hour and minute hands, as well as the hour markers are thick and easy to read. Certainly a unique and easy to love (or hate) watch. Original retail price was about $7,000 and prices now are somewhat more or less given the highly limited state of the watch.

Ulysse Nardin Monaco YS Maxi Marine Diver Limited Edition Watch

Ulysse Nardin says "I love you Monaco" with the Monaco YS Maxi Marine Diver watch. The principality is the locale for many a sold luxury watch, so luxury brands are keen on showing Prince Albert, the sovereign of Monaco the love. This time the watch is pretty nice, though far from original as it is just a redressed Maxi Marine Diver watch. Unlike the recent Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Black Surf Diver watch that I recently discussed, while both of these watches share black tones, the Monaco YS watch does the black with DLC (diamond like carbon) coated over the steel.

Like the Black Surf, this watch has 18k rose gold accents, just not as much of it. The watch also feature gray colored lume on the dial for a more stealthy look. There is also the "Monaco" branding on the dial. This Ulysse Nardin Monaco YS Maxi Marine Diver watch also has the UN caliber 26 automatic Chronometer movement with power reserve, and comes in a limited edition of just 100 pieces. Ceramic links are placed into the otherwise rubber strap. Pretty much everything else is the same as the outgoing Maxi Marine Diver watch, expect for the price, that will be more.

Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver Black Surf Limited Edition Watch

ulaysse nardin maxi marine
Another day and another limited edition luxury Swiss watch. This time a new color for the Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver, with the "Black Surf." Remember how everything is the "new black?" Well there is still the old black as well, and it is just as gifted as ever when it comes to fashionably fitting in.

The watch takes the standard Maxi Mariner Diver watch and gives it a nice black and gold overhaul. The roughly 43mm wide case is in 18k rose gold, while the dial, bezel inlay, and strap are all in black. I've always liked the combo of black and gold, but the look isn't always easy to pull off.

There are two versions of the limited to 500 pieces edition of the Black Surf Diver watch. The difference is in the metal link in the otherwise rubber strap that is either black or gold. Depends on your tastes of course in which you'll prefer. Inside the watch is the nicely executed UN-26 automatic movement that has been COSC Chronometer certified, with the time, date, subsidiary seconds, and top-mounted power reserve indicator. I've always enjoyed the layout of the dial, and it emulates the nautical instrument theme well. Expect prices to be a bit more than the mainstream Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver line of watches, as this a limited edition timepiece.

Ulysse Nardin Freak "Black Out" Watch For Only Watch 2009

ulysse nardin freak watch
The gentle changes to the Ulysse Nardin Freak transforming it into a one-off unique timepiece for the Only Watch 2009 auction are subtle, but make for a pleasant reminder that the Freak is a great watch. A few years ago Ulysse Nardin released the Freak which showcased a number of technological firsts including broad use of silicium for various parts of the movement including the tourbillon escapement. The watch blends the movement and dial for impressively legible dial that turns the balance wheel and escapement, including a gear train into the minute hand. The watch is a fantastic design and offers a great view into watch mechanics while seeing the time. Is it just me, or do the "spokes" in the balance wheel look like small Eiffel Towers?

Another interesting feature of the watch is that is does not have a crown. This is not the only crownless mechanical timepiece out there, but it is one of just a few. Winding the manually wound movement and setting the time is done via the bezel. The "carrousel" tourbillon movement has a seven day power reserve. This particular Freak watch for Only Watch 2009 is done in black with red toned hands, and a black alligator strap - while the case is done in 18k white gold.

Ulysse Nardin Chairman Smart Phone Hands On

Filed under: Gadgets, Timepieces / Watches

Ulysse Nardin surprised the haute horology world a few months ago with the announcement of a luxury smart phone. I originally discussed the Ulysse Nardin Chairman here, but recently got to sit down and personally experience three of the Chairman models my self. I also got to learn a lot more about what makes the Ulysse Nardin Chairman a real luxury of a mobile phone. I got to see the blue and satin steel, the black-toned model (very sexy!), and the blue steel and rose gold (very Ulysse Nardin!). The phone is large and pleasantly hefty - I would describe it more as comfortable and solid feeling rather than intimidating.

The back piece of the watch is made of a carbon fiber plate and a black ceramic plate (mobile phone antenna radio signals do not travel through metal well). The keypad features large comfortable keys and excellent backlighting - and the screen is one large sapphire crystal. Ulysse Nardin finally confirmed that the phone's operating system will be unique to the phone rather than just a skinned version of an existing mobile phone operating system.

Ulysse Nardin Executive Dual Time Watch

My first impression of the Executive Dual Time watch from Ulysse Nardin is that the timepiece is highly uncharacteristic of the brand. That is not to say this isn't a good watch, but rather that the design feels like an incredible departure from what I am used to seeing from the brand. On closer inspection you begin to realize lots of typical Ulysse Nardin features such as the layout of functions on the dial - but overall this is something truly new from Ulysse Nardin.

The Executive Dual Time is a very modern looking watch - my concern is whether it is refined enough to be taken seriously as a luxury timepiece. One element that I've never seen before is the rectangular index inside of a round dial. The bezel is black ceramic and the 43mm case is available in steel or 18k rose gold. The dual time functionality of the watch is pretty nifty. On the left side of the case are two pushers (for advancing or subtracting hours) used to operated the dual time window. The digit in the window displays the hour in GMT time, while the main minute hand is used for the minutes for both times. The watch also has a nicely integrated big date complication. While the subsidiary seconds works fine, there is nothing particularly special about it. Powering the watch is a automatic UN caliber 24 movement.

Something about the design of the watch feels a bit down market. Not cheap, but not Ulysse Nardin grade. I realize this is an exercise is being modern for them - and maybe the images don't do the watch justice - but I just can't seem to connect with the overall design of the watch which seems to have characteristics I'd see on a watch in a display case at Macy's.

Filed under: Gadgets, Timepieces / Watches

nardin phone
Famed Swiss watchmaker Ulysse Nardin has partnered with European firm SCI Innovations to create what's being billed as the world's first hybrid smartphone, blending a high-tech communications tool with a classic and elegant timepiece. Dubbed the Chairman, the luxurious limited edition phone pairs cutting-edge kinetic technology with the pedigree of Ulysse Nardin, founded in 1846. The Chairman will be launched at the Ulysse Nardin booth at BaselWorld in Switzerland at the end of the month, and will go on sale later this year.

While details are limited, we can tell you that the phone will be able to use any mobile phone service provider in the world and includes several components never seen before in a smartphone. A Ulysse Nardin kinetic rotor system has been incorporated into the Chairman's mechanical and aesthetic design. The blue and rose gold phone is hand-assembled under the watchmaker's strictest guidelines, and each bears a numbered plaque.

Ulysse Nardin Sonata Silicium Limited Edition Watch

Watchmaker Ulysse Nardin has introduced their new watch for Baselworld. The Sonata Silicium Limited Edition watch is a limited edition of 300 pieces (in an 18K white or rose gold case). Nardin is now using silicium in all its new models. The movement is the automatic UN caliber 67 with a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. The functions include hours, minutes, seconds, large date, dual time system with instant time zone adjuster, countdown, cathedral gong alarm. The case is 42mm and it has front and back sapphire crystals with an alligator strap. It's handsome enough and I'm sure the alarm sound is beautiful but I find the yellow hands a bit jarring on such an elegant watch.

Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Chronometer Savarona

How do you do justice to one of the world's most beautiful yachts, the Savarona? The Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Chronometer Savarona is a pretty sweet homage. The watch has the Savarona name on the dial and, what is even cooler is that is an engraving of the ship on the watch's rotor. The watch has a 43mm 18K rose gold case with front and back sapphire crystals. The movement is the automatic UN caliber 26 and is COSC-certified as a chronometer. It is a limited edition of 99 pieces in gold and 150 in stainless steel. The yacht is now owned by the government of Turkey and the watch is only available to the Turkish market.

Ulysse Nardin Lady Diver

Usually the watches of Ulysse Nardin leave me smitten but their new Lady Diver doesn't inspire. I think perhaps the reason the design doesn't wow me is because the same basic pattern is repeated on the dial, the bezel and the rubber bracelet. The overall effect in monotonous. Also the metal tabs at the top of the watch just seem like an extra place to stuff some diamonds. The watch is 40mm and uses the automatic UN caliber 810 movement. It is available in either a stainless steel or 18K rose gold case.

The San Marco cloisonne watches are a study in tiny artistry. Each one is handmade by an artist and features a scene such as St. Basil in Red Square or the bombardment of Algiers in 1816 complete with flames. Each watch has a rose gold case and comes in a limited edition of 30 Enamel Cloisonne dial. The 40mm watch has a self-winding movement and a power reserve of around 40 hours. There are nine watches with different faces in the collection.
