Building 'Green' in a Big Way: The EcoManor

With global warming becoming such an unavoidably huge issue, pretty much everybody has a soft spot for all things "eco." But that being said, not everybody takes it quite as far as Ted Turner's daughter, Laura Turner Seydel, and her husband did when they decided to built the biggest environmentally friendly home in the United States, the EcoManor.

It wasn't cheaper to build, although with features like recycled water from the showers irrigating the drought-resistant lawn, and rainwater-filled toilets, it will be cheaper to maintain -- 80 to 90 percent cheaper than other homes of similar size in the area. And with beautiful white linen wallpaper (made of recycled newspaper, of course) and natural lighting via solar tubes, the Seydels didn't have to sacrifice any style while they were doing their part to help the environment.

In July, Sotheby's is auctioning a collection of watercolors by British artist J.M.W. Turner that could bring in as much as £15 million ($29.4 million). Turner is the artist behind Britain's most expensive paintings, with an auction record of £20.5 million. His highest priced individual piece was The Blue Rigi (pictured), which sold for £5.8 million last year. This particular collection was assembled by Baron Guy Ullens, a Belgian collector of the painter's works, who is planning on switching the focus of his art holdings to Chinese contemporary art.

Turner Painting Sets New Records

Wow, the auction of that J.M.W. Turner painting at Christie's this week turned out to be even more exciting than imagined. The painting, "Giudecca, La Donna della Salute and San Giorgio" sold for $38.5 million to a private collector bidding over the phone. It set a new record for an Old Master painting in the U.S. and is the most expensive British painting ever sold. The painting was sold by the St. Francis of Assisi Foundation and as we mentioned before, is tax exempt.

Important Turner Painting To Be Auctioned By Christies

The painting to watch at the upcoming Important Old Masters Paintings auctions to be held at Christie's New York on April 6 is this painting by Joseph Mallord William Turner. The painting Guidecca, La Donna della Salute and San Giorgio was one of three Venetian paintings exhibited by Turner at the Royal Academy of Arts Exhibition of 1841. Turner traveled to Venice several times and painted many watercolors during his travels but only created a few oil paintings based on the same scenes. This painting captures Venice as a beautiful city already in decay. The painting's provenance dates back to its original sale for 250 guineas to Elhanan Bicknell. The painting was donated in 1992 to the St. Francis of Assisi foundation which is now selling the painting (making this a tax-exempt purchase for the lucky bidder). Turner is considered one of the finest British painters and his work paved the way for the Impressionists. The painting could sell for around $20 million.
