TreeHouses

Baumraum, Luxury Living in the Treetops

I never had a tree house as a kid and although I can't say I ever really felt deprived I wouldn't mind using that fact as an excuse to indulge myself in adulthood! These tree houses by Baumraum out of Germany are absolutely gorgeous, not to mention much larger and more luxurious than what the average 10 year old gets. They build custom tree houses all over the world, although mostly in Europe, and the designs vary from houses built up just a few feet off the ground to designs like this one way up in the tree tops (wonderful to look at but is it really secure balancing up there like that???).

The Strangest Hotels in the World

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Believe it or not, staying in posh hotel after posh hotel can get old. After awhile they all start to look the same and you may find yourself longing for something different.

Different you say? How different??? Because you can go as "different" as you want, and most of the time you can do it without giving up the designer linens and room service. You can stay underwater off the coast of Florida, in a treehouse in the Carribean with your own private beach, or how about something cooler like the frozen glamour of Sweden's ICEHOTEL? If that's a little too extreme for you there's always the fun themes at the Pitcher Inn and Spa, or the strangely angular rooms in the Kube Hotel.

See the entire list in this slideshow...so where do you want to go first? I'll take me a treehouse in Nairobi.

Mini Houses Go Deluxe

The Wall Street Journal has an interesting article on the luxury playhouses. It's a topic we've hit a bunch of times but the Journal has found some truly amazing stories of deluxe playhouses for the kids. Parents often go for the mini-me effect, creating a tiny version of their house in the back yard for the kiddies. The small versions often include televisions, lighting, heating and refrigerators and can cost upwards of $100,000. Some of the designers of these homes referenced in the article include:

Lilliput, a playhouse manufacturer in Finleyville, Pa., that Tudors and Victorians, mini markets and movie theaters and has a great display of custom properties on their website such as the mini village which is at their Cranberry Township, PA store.

La Petite Maison, a Denver-based company that offers deluxe playhouses and dog houses which can cost up to $50,000. They created the home shown at right.

Custom Playhouses based in Forest Lake, Minn., this firm creates adorable Victorians, log cabins, cottages and homes with red tile roofs. They also have a line of custom kid furniture.

Barbara Butler, a San Francisco-based designer, who makes forts, playhouses and tree houses and recently completed a $240,000 project for a Los Angles client.
