Vittorio J Select Series Limited Edition Ties

Vittorio J Select Series
Vittorio J's newest 'Select Series' tie collection is a true story of turning lemons into lemonade: the set only exists because of a factory error. The ties are three-fold silk but were accidentally labeled as seven-fold, a mistake that caused production to halt after only 85 ties had been produced.

The new series features the usual Vittorio J trademarks such as saddle stitching, old world Italian craftsmanship, and a high-quality NAPOLI + TELA lining, plus it has updated patterns and a slimmer profile of only 3.5". But what really makes this line special is that of the 85 pieces in existence 90% of them are one-of-a-kind items and no pattern is repeated more than twice. Interested? 35 of the special ties have already been purchased by a private collector but the remaining 50 are available while supplies last via Mary Theresa Sciandra, owner of Regal Threads. $125 - $175.

New Tailored Clothing from Thomas Pink for Fall

LVMH-owned London shirtmakers and haberdashers Thomas Pink are expanding their tailoring offerings this fall with a natty new collection of wool and tweed jackets, coats and accessories. The collection takes inspiration from great British sporting events where the country's rich heritage remains in full force. Vintage motoring, bicycling and horse racing all contribute influences to a collection full of color, detail and verve. The move is fitting as the firm's name comes from an 18th century London tailor known for making sought-after foxhunting jackets. They're offering classic covert cloth wool coats with velvet collars in navy and brown windowpane; Harris tweed jackets in salt and pepper and a green and pink windowpane; a corduroy sportcoat with contrast stitching (above); a green tweed shawl collar sweater; and tweed driving caps to match. Of course there's also a wide variety of Pink's signature shirts, silk ties and pocket squares in a variety of styles and fabrics.

Recycled Cassette Tape Neckties

Recycled Cassette Tape Neckties
Sonic fabric. That's the basis of these tie designs by Alyce Santoro. Sonic fabric is woven of 50% colored thread and 50% cassette tape, so if you were to run over one of these ties with a tape head you'd actually hear audible sounds. Garbled, jumbled sounds, but sounds nonetheless.

The ties are geared to New Yorkers as the audio tape is filled with recordings from on and under the streets of NYC, but clearly they can be enjoyed by anyone as the ties themselves are very crisp and stylish (and how often will you be listening to them anyway). They come in several colors and 3 styles (narrow, medium, and wide) for $90-$140.

Hermes Opens First Men's Store

Filed under: Apparel, Shoes, Men's Style

Hermès has opened its first men's store entirely dedicated to men's ready-to-wear, accessories and art of living. Called Hermès Man, the boutique is located at 690 Madison Avenue in New York at East 62nd Street and stands directly across the street from the U.S. flagship store.

"We felt there was a tremendous opportunity to really showcase all these wonderful products for men that Hermès makes," said Robert Chavez, President and CEO of Hermès USA during an exclusive interview with Luxist. "These products tended to be overshadowed or almost hidden among the other categories across the street. This store will raise the awareness level of our current and potential male clients in this market who might not have realized before that Hermès had all of these products, from our enamel cuff links to the made-to-measure program."

Despite the tough times affecting other retailers, Paris-based Hermès International is a company that performs better than its competition because its customer base includes the super-affluent, many of who have proven to be recession-proof. Indeed, the company recently reported an 8.5% rise in 2009 revenue (11% on an organic basis) attributed to an end-of-the-year increase in sales of its iconic Birkin and Kelly bags. Sales increased by a robust 20% in the Americas, compared to 12% for Asia and 9% in Europe. Revenue for the year rose to EUR1.91 billion from EUR1.76 billion a year ago, outperforming the company's previous target of flat sales. "This is among the best performances posted in the sector," says J.P. Morgan in a research report published this month.

According to Chavez, the Hermès customer is less affected by the recession than the general population, but they are more discerning. "They are not free-spending," he says. "When they do make a purchase, they want something that is more versatile, that will last and endure. Our clients want something that will last them for a long time."

For this discerning customer, the store features an array of merchandise made specifically for the new Hermes boutique. Exclusive items include a selection of silk ties---one with the Statue of Liberty next to the Eiffel Tower on the front---while another has an apple motif and comes in four different colors. On the reverse of the ties, "Hermès Homme" appears, which is a signature for the new line.

Another signature product that is exclusive for the Hermès Man boutique is a handcrafted leather baseball glove, which retails for $8,500. "The baseball glove is a new product," says Chavez. "It has never been made before by Hermes. We thought if we are opening our very first Hermès boutique for men in the world and it is going happen in the United States and in New York City, then we need to make to make a baseball glove. When you think about it---with the leather and the stitching, it is a natural fit for us. When we first saw the glove, we were all taken aback by how beautiful it is. And as fate would have it, as we knew this date was approaching, the New York Yankees won the World Series."

Gangster Chic Ties from Duncan Quinn

Duncan Quinn, the London-born, New York-based menswear designer whose Savile Row-with-a-twist togs are favored by the likes of Sean Combs, Entourage star Adrien Grenier, LeBron James and alt-rockers Green Day among others, has come out with a new line of silk ties sporting gangster chic motifs to complement his killer new fall collection we previewed here. The designs (above) are partially inspired by Russian prison tattoos - think Viggo Mortensen in Eastern Promises - and are made of 100% silk handwoven in England, cut, stitched and finished by hand in New York City. A lot of Quinn's inspiration comes from the "long and well-recorded history of members of the criminal fraternity frequenting Savile Row for their sharp suits and other attire," the designer notes - the ones played by Michael Caine at least.

Hugh Simms Handmade Patchwork Neckties

Hugh Simms is an L.A. based designer with degrees from Cornell and Fashion School F.I.D.M., where he first developed what he describes as his "Ivy League Grit" style. Passionate about supporting the American way and the Los Angeles manufacturing revival, all of his Handmade Patchwork Neckties are made in a small workshop in the heart of L.A. and each pattern, full of details, has significance and meaning. In the photo above Simms is wearing "Lost Library," which takes its inspiration from dusty broken-spined books filled with a paradox of both intelligence and toughness.

Hand-Numbered Limited Edition Ties from Vittorio J

Limited Edition Ties from Vittorio JThose who prefer only the most exclusive items will be charmed by the new line of hand-numbered, limited edition ties from Vittorio J.

The new Exclusive Collection has over 100 styles, but only five of each has been made. Each one is cut, folded and hand-sewn in Naples by artisanal craftsmen, and they feature a hand-made bar tack and Ossiticina Oil, which gives the ties "strength and durable luster."

The Exclusive Collection incorporates high yarn count English silk and double-blend fabric lining (known as NAPOLI + TELA), along with double slip-stitching to prevent wrinkles and protect the fabric.

Another exciting feature:
"The ties include an elastic thread stitched through the interior, and an exposed loop is accessible through an opening at the wider end. If the tie becomes wrinkled, it can be straightened out with a simple tug on the loop, potentially adding years to its lifespan."

The Exclusive Collection can be found at Imparali Custom Tailors for the very reasonable price of $125 - $300.

Vittorio J Ties for Bespoke

Vittorio J for Michael Andrews BespokeVittorio J is an NYC fine tie designer who has created an exclusive, limited collection for the Michael Andrews Bespoke store on the Lower East Side.

The Bespoke collection is made entirely by hand in New York - rare indeed! - with 100% English printed silk which reportedly comes from the same high-end fabric houses used by Kiton and E. Marinella. The ties are retailing for $69.

We find the designs playful and eye-catching without being over-the-top, perfect for the gentleman with a whimsical streak. The set of ties at right features tiny skulls and crossbones - a subtle rebellion.

If you like any of the ties in this gallery, you'd best call custom clothier Michael Andrews Bespoke today; no more than fifteen of each tie has been created.

Hlaska Ties Have a Secret Theme

Make a quiet statement of individuality with these men's ties from Hlaska. At first glance they appear to be fairly standard patterns and stripes, but look closer and you'll see a definite scientific influence, especially to do with the stars and solar system. Available in light to dark colors, you can be wearing stripes that double as strings of dna helixes or binary code, or even the rings of Saturn.

We'll leave it up to you whether you want to enjoy your somewhat geeky (said with all the love in the world) fashion statement in relative silence, or go pointing out the details to everyone in the office. $125

Cuff Links by Prince Charles

Prince Charles will soon be launching a luxury line of cuff links and ties. The new cuff links will be released in limited edition, made of silver and enamel in "arabesque" designs, and are scheduled for release later this month under the label Traditional Arts (which so far has only included houseware items). By the end of the year the new goodies should be available here in the States and around the world. And don't worry, you're not paying to support royal amenities like fine china for afternoon tea -- all the profits go to charity.
