Just in time for spring in New York City, Thompson Hotels has opened Smyth in TriBeCa. The boutique hotel offers 100 guestrooms in a newly-constructed building on West Broadway and Chambers Street. The name comes from "the anonymity of Mr. & Mrs. Smith" and is meant to provide an urban refuge for the hip. The lobby was designed by Yabu Pushelberg and staff uniforms were created by Helmut Lang. The rooms are decorated in rich wine tones with walnut paneling and chrome-accented furniture and marble bathrooms. Rooms also feature Kiehl's products, robes by Frette and linens by Sferra as well as an in-room pantry stocked with Dean & Deluca snacks and naughties from Kiki de Montparnasse. Art by John Sparagana adorns each guest room and paintings by self taught Argentinean artist, Santiago Rubino, are featured in the lobby's interior.

Restaurateur Frederick Lesort is behind the Lobby Bar and the Smyth has a 24-hour room service menu. The Jour et Nuit Restaurant & Lounge will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, with an espresso bar offering sandwiches and pastries during the day and cured meats with alcoholic beverages at night. The lower level Cellar Cocktail Lounge offers a hideaway to sample unique cocktails. Rates start at $275 for a standard room, $575 for a king suite, and $3,500 for the penthouse.

Despite the notorious delays of the Thompson LES (as in Lower East Side) hotel, the latest in hotelier Jason Pomeranc's lineup of luxury sleepover parties, a few teaser pics have surfaced thanks to Men.Style.com. Above is the LES pool, complete with a triptych of Andy Warhol photolithographed to the bottom. Now scheduled to open July 29, Thompson LES was designed by architect Ed Rawlings and sits high at 190 Allen Street, eighteen stories reminding the neighborhood that the times they are a-changin'.

Thompson Hotels to Have 10 Properties by 2009

Jason Pomeranc, the eagle-eyed entrepreneur behind the boutique Thompson Hotels brand, clearly isn't concerned about the economic downturn. Pomeranc recently opened two new outposts, one in New York and one in D.C., and he has another New York space opening this summer to add to the five chic spots already in his portfolio. Recently completed was the revamp of Gild Hall, the Financial District hotel he acquired in December, with a Todd English eatery to follow in the fall; and the Donovan House in D.C. Most enticing of all is the Thompson LES (for Lower East Side) with its rooftop pool featuring an Andy Warhol photomural on the bottom, slated to open this summer. Next year Pomeranc has properties planned for Tribeca and Toronto, bringing his total portfolio up to ten. In addition to the original 60 Thompson opened in 2001, he has the happening Hollywood Roosevelt (pictured above) and the top-drawer Thompson Beverly Hills, both in Los Angeles. See the gallery for pix of the new Gild Hall and more.
