The Fashion Statement: Baby Bumps and the Red Carpet

There is serious baby fever in Hollywood. Starting this Sunday at the Golden Globes, more baby bumps will be taking a turn on the red-carpet than you can shake a stick at. Victoria Beckham. Natalie Portman. Penelope Cruz. Gretchen Mol. Mariah Carey. Jewel. Pink. Jennifer Connelly. Rachel Zoe. And, just yesterday, Kate Hudson announced she had a bun in the oven. With so many expectant celebs, TV show Extra compiled a list to keep everybody's due date straight. We're, of course, more concerned with what they'll be wearing.

You might think this many women with child during awards season could foil a designer's grand ambition to see his/her couture gowns on the red carpet. Think again. Designers have pregnancy down. Remember Catherine Zeta Jones in 2003? The word "luscious" came to mind when the nine-months-pregnant star walked the Oscars in a low-cut chocolate-colored gown with beaded straps. And it was a coup for Versace.

My friend and colleague Amy Tara Koch published a book last year called Bump It Up and, in it, are great style tips courtesy of designers and fashion insiders.

"Half of pregnancy has to do with attitude," Filipa Fino, accessories editor at Vogue, told Koch. "I just refused to give in to feeling dowdy. And therefore, I did not look dowdy!"

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Poses Nude for Rankin

Famed Scottish photographer Rankin is coming out with a new book dedicated to British beauty Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (above), who's said to be a cousin of the Queen of England. The Victoria's Secret stunner, chosen to replace Megan Fox in the next Transformers movie, poses nude in some of the shots for the book titled Ten Times Rosie. The volume also showcases the designs of Paula Thomas, founder and head designer of the luxury label Thomas Wylde. "Shooting Ten Times Rosie was the most incredible experience of my career," Huntington-Whiteley tells Vogue UK. "Paula, Rankin and the team worked so hard, the set had an amazing atmosphere. I think we have created some beautiful and iconic images." Huntington-Whiteley takes on ten different personas for the book representing Thomas Wylde's 10th anniversary. The sexy pix will also be displayed in a new exhibition running through October 29 at London's Annroy Gallery.

Thomas Wylde Studded Leather Clutch, Handbag of the Day

Thomas Wylde Studded Leather Clutch
Studs love living on a structured bag and I love this studded black leather beauty by Thomas Wylde for its grid-like pattern and boxy shape. The Studded Leather Clutch can be carried two ways: by the designer-stamped silver-lined handle or under your arm with the top folded down. The slightly distressed leather contrasts with the tightly packed and highly shined studs for fierce fashion statement. The bag closes via zipper and has an animal-skull print lining with two interior pockets. An edgy piece great for dressing up skinny jeans, contrasting with a gauzy feminine top, or even (if you dare) giving a boring business suit a zesty pop of style. $1,800

Nomad Fringe Bag, Handbag of the Day

Black leather fringe makes a statement all its own, and no matter what you pair it with or how you wear it it's sure to be a noticed part of your ensemble.

This bag, the Nomad Fringe bag by Thomas Wylde, is swingy flippy fringe at its best. Made of soft and crinkled grained leather arranged in several tiered levels, the hardware is gunmetal silver and the bag features a quilted, spider-print lining. Also notice two rolled leather handles, a long detachable shoulder strap, and magnetic snap closure. $2,800

Thomas Wylde Zanzibar Leather Clutch, Handbag of the Day

Are skulls still in? I guess it makes sense that they are (and will always be) since they're one of the universal symbols for "bad-ass" and that attitude just never goes out of fashion.

I like this crystal-encrusted take on the skull by Thomas Wylde but I can't help but wonder why the little guy's mouth is hanging open ... is he hungry? About to say something? He looks more shocked than he does tough. Anyway ...

This Zanzibar Leather Clutch is made fold-over style with a zip closure on the front. Simple and interesting, I think this is the kind of handbag that grows on you over time. $1,495

Thomas Wylde Colossus Scorpion Bag, Handbag of the Day

This Thomas Wylde Colossus Scorpion Bag is for those who want something that is not only crisp and bright for spring but also has a bit of an edge to it. Two large scorpions formed from jewels and studs hang somewhat quietly (it takes a second to see what they are) onto the side of the distressed finish white lambskin leather, and it gets a few more "bad" points from large pointed studs on either side and a quilted scorpion print lining. Plus it has a chunky gold chain shoulder strap, magnetic closure, a nameplate on the back, and a flat leather base. $2500.

Thomas Wylde Fairground Tote, Handbag of the Day

I think the skull trend should be just about over by now, but with Halloween approaching, it seems appropriate to spotlight a ghoulish bag. From a distance, you might not even recognize the dead heads all over this canvas bag. But you will notice the proliferation of gunmetal logos tags hanging from every possible location. By my count, there are five -including a stationary one on the front pocket. For me, that is about three too many. I do like the numerous pockets - a zippered front pocket, two patch pockets on the sides and another on the back. The rolled patent leather handles have a 5.5" drop and inside the bag is lined in skull logo canvas and features a patent-trimmed zip pocket, patch and cell phone pockets. Even the bottom of this bag gets special treatment with patent leather and protective metal feet. As skull bags go, this one isn't too bad. $990.

Thomas Wylde Sacrifice Bag, Handbag of the Day

I know this look is not for everybody, and even a crystal-encrusted skull can be kind of scary looking, but I am just a tiny bit attracted to this bag. Look past the dead head on the leather flap and the bag is a riot of pleasing, shaggy softness. Made from distressed Mongolian lamb, it has an intentional worn look that adds even more character to a bag that wasn't short on character to begin with. The chain and leather strap is nice, but beware - the interior not only sports zip and patch pockets, but skull lining as well. $3,000.
