The Gables, Estate of the Day

You want history? Today's home has it. The Gables in Morris Township, New Jersey, was originally built in 1885 and then bought a few years later by Charles Scribner, the owner of New York publishers, Charles Scribner's Sons. The Scribners expanded the house to add a library, dining room and porches. In 1994 the present owners took the house through another expansion, adding a country kitchen ,second floor library and office along with guest rooms and bath. The home now has over 20 rooms with 12 fireplaces. The home's windows have been updated with energy efficient double glazed versions that replicate the originals. The home also has the original antique pumpkin pine hardwood floors along with wide-board antique heart pine in the kitchen and oak in the new construction. The 1994 update also added an elevator and an intercom system. This home is on three acres that include a pool and a Queen Anne style pool house with a full bath. The home is listed at $3.95 million. After the jump, the perfect setting for a historical novel.
