Ryan McGinness' Black Light Paintings at The Standard

Ryan McGinness' Black Light Paintings at The Standard
Artist Ryan McGinness is installing his latest work Women: The Blacklight Paintings as well as a set of vinyl installations at The Shop and Le Bain in The Standard, New York presented by Country Club. The work is the follow-up to last December's installation during Art Basel Miami and will be followed by another showing this spring in Los Angeles.

The playful and colorful works take you back to the early 1980s, consisting of fluorescent paint that glows under a black light. The graphic vinyl installations are on view at The Standard, New York Shop and 18th floor club Le Bain during Armory Week through March 6. The overall effect combines a Picasso-esque adoration of the female form with the energy of Keith Haring pieces.

The Standard always combines art with commerce and 300 Limited edition signed and numbered Blacklight posters are for sale for $200 each. One silkscreened print edition of the Blacklight Nudie Cards, printed in fluorescent inks and in an edition of 52 plus five artist's proofs for $5,500 is available through The Standard Shop in New York. The Blacklight Nudie Cards are custom designed classic poker playing cards that will be released in LA in the Spring and available across all Standards. For more information check out an interview with McGinness at The Standard website.

KAWS Light Bulbs For The Standard Hotel

It's not too often that I'm compelled to write about light bulbs but these are pretty cool. The Standard hotel just launched their collaboration with artist KAWS for limited edition filament light bulbs. The limited edition light bulbs are being sold as a three-bulb set by The Standard. There will 1,000 sets of the red, purple and green filament bulbs in KAWS signature XX mark (he often uses it in images of the standard cartoon trope of the x marks over the eyes symbolizing death). Each set is $65. "You're raised not to stare at light bulbs, but this is the opposite of that," KAWS told the NY Times.

Along with the light bulbs, two different types of KAWS pillows in multiple colors and KAWS companion key chains will also be exclusively available for sale at New York shop. Brooklyn-based artist and designer Brian Donnelly, a.k.a. KAWS, has created graffiti writings and street art; graphic, industrial and product design, including limited toy editions and streetwear fashion, sketches, drawings, paintings, murals, and sculptures. Check out more of his work at his website.

Last summer Quiksilver and The Standard hotels paired up to create The Standard Boardshort by Quiksilver to celebrate "the bold attitudes and bright colors of the boardshort's golden era." At the same time Quiksilver announced it would be selling its bikinis in the bikini/boardshort vending machines at The Standard hotel. It's a new summer, and so here the two are again with a new announcement: 2010 sees four more custom boardshort creations, a new reversible bikini and a set of Standard Sunglasses by Quiksilver.

This year the designs weren't only a celebration of the past but of the present: the various colors and patterns are also connected to the aesthetics of The Standard's various locations. There will be 250 pieces of each, with The Standard Boardshorts by Quiksilver running $75, The Standard Bikini by Quiksilver going for $88, and the Standard Sunglasses by Quiksilver retailing for $75. They'll be available in those vending machines and at The Standard online store.

Whether you're looking for the streetside scene, the hidden garden or the top-of-the-world views from rooftops, there's a new hot spot in New York that fits the bill. Here's where to see and be-sipping this spring.

Sporty clothing company Quiksilver has partnered with André Balazs' The Standard Hotels on co-branded swimwear that will be sold not only in the hotel boutiques but also poolside in special vending machines in New York, Los Angeles, Hollywood and Miami.
