Thakoon Draped Collar Coat

The classic beige trench coat is completely revamped with the magical touch of fashion design star Thakoon. His Draped Collar Coat ($1090) takes the essence of a traditional trench coat and infuses it with a modern and unique twist that is very appealing.

Made from a mix of virgin wool, mohair, alpaca and a hint of nylon, the Draped Collar Coat boasts a dramatic and oversized relaxed collar (which exposes reversed twill), a curved hem that drops in the back, and crochet lace trim at the collar, opening, sleeves, hem and along the belt.

Contrasting colors of grey and white make for a stand out of a coat that still exudes a timeless elegance. I especially liked the hints of reverse twill scattered throughout the coat.

While you won't be able to wear Thakoon's coat on rainy days like the typical trench coat, it will provide some warmth and serve well as a chic and effortless accent to your outfit.

Immortalizing Shakepeare (and the Greeks) With Sunglasses

Limited edition shades inspired by The Bacchae
Theirry Lasry and Thakoon have both helped to immortalize this year's glorious summer of Shakespeare in the Park with limited edition collections of sunglasses for Soho sunglasses boutique ILORI.

The Thierry Lasry styles, above, are all aviator-based and called "Agavy" after The Bacchae's leading character Agave (all Thierry Lasry design names end in "y"). Only twelve of each color has been made -- and yes, they are numbered -- and they retail for $365.00. Not a bad price for a numbered collectible!

Below in the gallery, check out the Twefth Night styles, designed by Thakoon and named "Viola" for Anne Hathaway's character. The hexagonal, feminine Viola shades retail for $320.00, and only twelve of each color was made.

Of course, now that the summer of Shakespeare is over, your only hope is to call ILORI's exclusive treasure trove in Soho and beg. It'll be worth it to snag a pair of these sunglasses which support and celebrate free theater in Central Park!

Cheap Chic: Thakoon to Design for Target

Thakoon Panichgul is the latest designer to collaborate with Target, according to WWD, in what is promised to be a print-heavy collection that will debut at Christmas. Favored by fashion insiders since his debut in 2004, Thakoon has reached a much broader audience after Michelle Obama donned his design at her husband's acceptance of the Democratic nomination for President.

It becomes one of those chicken-before-the-egg conundrums: much wider audience, then the collaboration with Target or vice versa?

Cheap Chic: Gilt Groupe

The invitation-only online sample sales run by Gilt Groupe have gotten a major boost in an economy that needs a major booster shot. Launched less than a year ago, the site claims it maintains a "private online community," whether fashion-seekers are invited by existing members or through customer service on the site.

Sample sales are announced via email and generally last 36 hours -- or less, considering prices are 70% off retail. This week alone, I've received messages for sales on Chloé, Derek Lam and Thakoon. (The image above is from today's Marc by Marc Jacobs sale.)

The fledgling startup has recently forged partnerships with Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and the CFDA. It also appointed last week the former Martha Stewart CEO Susan Lyne in preparation for click-happy recessionistas. The site does civilize the whole sample sale scene -- no Balenciaga tug-of-wars beyond the virtual.

Audrey Hepburn-esque model / socialite Jessica Joffe fêted luxury sunglass shop ILORI's exclusive new Thakoon Hexagon 502 shades at their NYC boutique the other night. Thai-born designer Thakoon Panichgul (with Joffe, above), whose fashions are favored by the likes of Rachel Bilson, Demi Moore and Sarah Jessica Parker, debuted the new sunglass design featuring his signature Japanese shibori print, which will only be available at ILORI for a limited time. ILORI, which also has high-end stores in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Las Vegas, specializes in curated collections, exclusive styles and limited edition frames. The Hexagon model, which costs $315, is made to match clothing from Thakoon's chic Spring/Summer runway collection. See the gallery for more.
