Four Peaks Brewing Co.: Award-Winning Beer in Arizona

Four Peaks Brewery is nominated as best brew pub
For over a decade, Four Peaks Brewing Company in Tempe, Ari., has been among the best destinations for beer in the Southwest. In the wake of countless awards at the likes of the World Beer Cup and the Great American Beer Festival, it's no surprise that the brew pub responsible for the victorious liquids is a Luxist nominee in the best brew pub category.

Four Peaks' building started out as something quite different from its current incarnation. Back in 1892, the warehouse was first constructed to store milk for Pacific Creamery and Bordens Creamery. Today, the red brick walls and high wooden ceilings surround a different kind of libation: the delicious ales of Four Peaks Brewing Company.

In addition to seasonal varieties, the brewpub boasts a handful of mainstays. There's Kilt Lifter, an award-winning Scottish-style ale, amber in color and smoky in taste. For Anglophiles, there's 8th Street Ale, an English-style bitter beer made from rare Kentish hops. Those looking for something a little sweeter will enjoy Arizona Peach, a subtle and fruity beer. Hops-lovers will enjoy Hop Knot I.P.A., named for the weaving of four different types of hops at four different times during the brewing process.

Solid nourishment can also be had at Four Peaks – the accompanying restaurant offers a full menu of lunch and dinner items. And if a trip to Tempe is too long a trek, try the brewpub's second location, Four Peaks Grill and Tap in Scottsdale.

Vote for the brew pub that you believe is the best of breed. The voting period runs through April 30 and winners will be announced on May 1.

Tempe Condo Complex Faces Foreclosure

In 2006 I wrote that condo enthusiasm is alive and well in Tempe, Arizona "despite a market that is showing some serious instability." Allow me to eat those words, the project I wrote about as a sign of that enthusiasm, Centerpoint Condominiums, has now fallen into foreclosure. The concrete, glass and steel projected called for a pair of 30-story towers with around 800 units ranging in size from small studios to large penthouses. Amenities included a swimming pool, hot tub that has a sand beach entry, cabana bar, café and grocery store. Instead the project floundered and still awaits completion.

An auction date has been set for April. The property once owned by Tempe Land Co. could be sold to the highest bidder. According to the Arizona Republic, ML Manager LLC, acting on behalf of investors, filed for foreclosure and placed the unpaid principal of condo developer Tempe Land Co. LLC at $135 million.

This makes the second major Arizona development foreclosure in just a couple of weeks. Capmark Finance filed to foreclose on the High Street section of Phoenix's ambitious CityNorth project. CityNorth is a 144-acre development that was to be a network of neighborhoods with shops, cafes and parks amid the residential space. A foreclosure auction date for High Street is set for March 31.

The Bridgeview, Luxury in Tempe

Filed under: Estates, Real Estate Developments

Condominiums may be in tough shape all over the country but one thing is certain, empty nesters are beginning to move into them. The Arizona Republic covers the opening of Bridgeview, a luxury condo tower on the south shore of Tempe Town Lake. The 12-story tower has views of the lake and bridges (hence the name) as well as neighboring towns and the mountains. The $140 million building is n the 17-acre Hayden Ferry Lakeside mixed-use site that also includes office space and retail. A luxury hotel is also planned. Amenities at Bridgeview include a lounge, library with a fireplace, business center, demonstration and catering kitchen, dining room/supper club, home theater, billiards room, a gym with a sauna and steam room, outdoor heated pool and spa, outdoor barbeque area, zen garden and a putting course.

While many condo towers in the Southwest have had trouble selling, the project manager at Bridgeview reports that nearly half the 104 Bridgeview condos were sold before construction was completed. That would have been slow sales a few years back but is pretty good for this market. Bridgeview has one-, two- and three-bedroom residences starting at about $680,000 and 5,000-square-foot penthouse homes at about $5.6 million.
