Ladoire Roller Guardian Time Blue Watch

As its popularity grows, Ladoire timepieces of Switzerland moves to add new models, as the small independent watch maker eyes the future. While many independent luxury watch brands never reach the momentum necessary for their watches to be serious hits, the interesting Roller Guardian Time watch has been well received despite its relatively high price point. The fascinating rounded rectangular case is a mixture of soft curved and sharp edges - a very modern style that is popular in automotive design - which is a likely source of influence for the younger Lionel Ladoire who began the brand only in 2007.

The Roller Guardian Time Blue is a variation on the core design and mechanics. I discussed the Roller Guardian Time watch here further, with hands-on images of the piece. Actually, in the gallery in that previous post you can see an early picture of this blue version of the watch that I was able to snap. The Roller Guardian Blue is a lovely refresh on the design with some new styling and a black PVD and blue dial and case. The strap is blue alligator. As complex as it looks the Roller Guardian time is actually quite simple to read. The watch has an exclusive automatic (micro-rotor) mechanical movement and tells the time and GMT time. Priced around $150,000.

Time Mag Shuts Down Its Quarterly, Style & Design

Though the site in question is still up as I write this, it was reported in the New York Post that Time magazine has shut down its fashion quarterly, Style & Design. The Post item states, "Time blamed the collapse of the luxury market for the move. 'This really is a suspended publication,' said a spokeswoman of the one million-circulation magazine. 'We'd hope to bring it back when the economy improves.' " Kate Betts, the one-time editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar who had been editor of Time Style & Design, will remain with the company and is expected to cover this month's Fashion Week shows for Time. Four other staffers were let go.

Time Style & Design tried to have an American and a European circulation base, in a bid to capture the eye -- and ad dollars -- of fashion designers in New York as well as in Paris, Milan, and London. About 550,000 subscribers were based in the United States, and 450,000 in Europe.

This event marks the second time during the third quarter that Time Inc. has shut down a magazine. Last month, the company closed Southern Accents, part of Time Inc.'s Southern Progress subsidiary.

The Top 15 Watches of 2008

Because watches have their roots in practicality, one can almost not go too far over the top when choosing the ultimate watch to express their individual style. This year at Luxist, we featured watches with all manner of unusual eccentricities and legacies, including watches that only tell if it's day or night, watches inspired by the Beijing Olympics, and watches containing rare gems, woods, and actual meteorite.

Featured above is the watch with the meteorite: The Van Cleef & Arpels Midnight in Paris Watch, which shows a representation of the stars visible from Paris on a typical night set in a lovely rose gold.

As watches become less important for telling time (because it's on your cell phone), we believe it is only natural that they will become more and more beautiful.

Intended to "free people from the slavery of time," Vivianna Torun made these watches extremely simple -- featuring a plain face with no numbers and simple hands. In addition the open bangle design symbolizes that "time should not bind us" while the mirrored face serves as a reminder that "life is now."

Very dramatic sentiment but it works in this case as the watches themselves are certainly dramatic. Available in gold, silver, and black stainless steel, the simplest designs sell for $2,200 while the limited edition version (that includes 173ct of pavé diamonds) is priced at $28,500.

Even Dubai Feels Wall Street's Pain...

In a global marketplace, even Dubai isn't protected from the economy's frosty embrace. Although real estate giants don't anticipate a market crash in this tourist hot spot it has certainly slowed the rush to invest in Dubai down a bit. There may be a positive note in this unpredictable market as some believe the speculators or "flippers" will get weeded out and bring more stability. I don't pretend to understand everything about the effects of our economic issues but it's certainly disconcerting when Dubai is feeling the strain.

Glam Rock Miami Python Watch

We first covered this Glam Rock Miami Beach Automatic timepiece last fall and now we're on to this pretty member of the Miami Collection -- the Python, in brown. Glam Rock gets an animalistic update from a multi-toned python strap, shown here in brown but also available in blue. Of course it features the expected "Glam Rock" logo in the face center and the buckle, plus luminescent black hands and diamond trim totaling 0.30 carats. This Miami Collection member is definitely one of the more neutral and versatile, without giving up any bling. $2,095

Things to Consider When Buying a Waterproof Watch

In the market for a waterproof watch? You may have trouble finding one, considering few watches (if any) are truly and completely waterproof, and are in reality only water resistant. Water resistance is a term that can mean anything from "withstands minor splashing" to "submersible up to 100 meters," to any number of other definitions. So before you take your $5000 "water-resistant" watch into the swimming pool you may want to check on some details. Maybe it can go cannon balling with you or maybe it should stay sitting safely by your beach towel and flip flops -- either way it's something worth knowing.

About Time

Here's a modern and artistic way to tell about what time it is: the About Time clock from Sander Mulder. There are no numbers so it's not for somebody who needs to be precise (that's what your watch is for), but instead it tells the time in general terms ("more like around eight") via what amounts to a big run-on sentence that runs around the outside edge. The clock rolls around and whatever part is touching the table is readable and represents the current time. Very cool and I love it, although it obviously needs a little bit of room to maneuver (I'd worry it would roll itself right off my small desk). $179

Font Clock by Sebastian Wrong

Part of the reason it's hard to choose what kind of accessories and decorations to have in your home is that once you've decided you're somewhat stuck with it, at least for awhile. And although this Font Clock by Sebastian Wrong definitely has a certain appearance at all times, it also does a good job of switching up the details and looking a little different every day. It's "a 21st century take on the British 24 hour clock design icon," and it has 12 different fonts stored inside for a mixed up and random view of the date and time. It comes in 3 sizes ranging in price from £195 to £810.

Nava Wall Clock Time Bodoni

Home decor items like clocks aren't easy to give as gifts, but if you know just the person (or maybe are looking to upgrade your own home's look before the hordes of family arrive) you might find yourself in the market. This Nava Wall Clock Time Bodoni Green will fit either a contemporary home or one with a bend towards the whimsical. It has some of the numbers, but not all, and even though they all appear to have slipped off to one side in a clump they're amazingly still in the appropriate places. "Forward in Time" Wooden Floor Clock

This design strikes me as something out of a dream -- a little curvy and abstract, slightly warped and out-of-whack looking, but in a very peaceful and artistic way. For being a modern contemporary design it also has a nice "warm fuzzy" vibe. It's the "Forward in Time" wooden floor clock, and created by Brian Hubel it's made of thick-skinned black cherry with ebony accents on the clock face. Available in the extremely limited edition of only 5, this clock stands 70"H x 23"W x 13.5"D and goes for $6600.

Numbers Clock

I'm generally pretty old-fashioned in my tastes, but one exception is my alarm clock -- the funkier and more modern the better! And this is a fun looking clock, with cubes representing each number that can be arranged however you want. Designed by Jonas Damon, the Numbers Clock is a clock stripped down to its simplest form of just the numbers and an alarm function. Just be careful not to get too creative and stack the numbers up in a way that you'll be confused how to read it in the middle of the night!

Available with white numbers or red, $80.

City Hall Clock

Simple is often better, and these days it's surprising that often simple is also more expensive. Take this rather plain looking City Hall Clock for example. From Arne Jacobsen it was designed back in 1955 for the Rødovre City Hall in Copenhagen, Denmark. This is one of those situations where I'm sure you could find a more inexpensive look-alike in a department store, but if having an original with the designer's name means something to you then this clock will too. With clean black lines and small circles to designate numbers and minutes, this large but simple clock could make a surprisingly dramatic statement. 17.5" diameter, $441.
