RSVIP: Fashion Sings at Yves Saint Laurent-Sponsored Met Opera Gala

Emmy Rossum Yves Saint Laurent Met OperaRossini never wrote love music more lovely than the score of "Le Comte Ory" (1828), a comic opera which debuted at The Metropolitan Opera in New York on Thursday. But Yves Saint Laurent creative director Stefano Pilati was responsible for the cavalcade of fashion on the gala's jet-black arrivals carpet.

The set: the icy chill of a tented quarter-mile hallway leading to the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center on March 24.

The story onstage at the Met: love, identity confusion, and some cross-dressing in the 19th century. Met director Bartlett Sher has described "Le Comte Ory" as "a place where love is dangerous. People get hurt."

"That can be very funny and very painful," quips Sher.

Stefano Pilati Designs The Opium Experience: A New YSL Retail Space At Crystals, Las Vegas

"I call it the opium experience," Stefano Pilati, Creative Director of Yves Saint Laurent, and of the Yves Saint Laurent's boutique retail space design. Opium is the name of the amber/reddish lacquer of the ceilings and wall panels. It is, serendipitously, also the name of the French brand's legendary perfume.

Las Vegas has two YSL Boutiques, but the one at City Center is the first to be designed in the Stefano Pilati style. Only two other YSL stores in the US feature this design at present. Historically, the store design was unveiled back in 2008 at the beginning of Paris Fashion Week. It was Pilati's hope that the design would become iconic enough to be recognizable without any logo.

"I wanted to do something that was timeless," Pilati said in an interview back then, " where the design had to go beyond my era at Saint Laurent: it had to be contemporary, with a strong, identfiable identity."

Everything Old Is New Again With Yves Saint Laurent's New Vintage III

Yves Saint Laurent creative director Stefano Pilati has gone into the archives again for the brand's latest project. New Vintage III is the third capsule collection from YSL that is comprised of garments made from recycled fabric and from existing patterns. The 180 pieces include classic YSL shapes such as metallic wide leg trousers, velvet tuxedo suiting jackets and leopard-print wrap dresses that look back to the 1970s designs when YSL dressed celebrities like Bianca Jagger and Catherine Deneuve. The goal of the collection is to marry "feminine refinement with sustainability." YSL's New Vintage III is available in limited, numbered editions at YSL flagship boutiques in Paris, London and New York.

Steve McQueen Wins Gucci Group Award for 2008

Steve McQueen is the art world's new King of Cool. The British filmmaker whose recent project Hunger won the prestigious Caméra d'Or award at Cannes, adds another prominent award to his collection: Gucci Group's annual recognition of an international artist who makes a significant contribution to film. And this year's group of nominees -- Julian Schnabel, Isaac Julien and Adam Yauch -- provided staunch competition indeed.

Robert Polet, Gucci's CEO and President, presented the award to McQueen during the 65th Venice Film Festival in Venice, Italy. The committee included some of the world's greatest arbiters of style, Italian Vogue's Franco Sozzani, the artist Jeff Koons, actress Isabelle Huppert, Yves Saint Laurent's creative director Stefano Pilati and the artistic director of the Venice Film Festival, Marco Muller.
