Stainless Steel

The Modern Pinwheel

I'm a sucker for accent pieces that find a way to blend the whimsical energy of happy childhood memories with a dose of maturity for the adult I am today. These stainless steel pinwheels from Chiasso take the breezy fun from days past and mix it with a healthy dose of class and durability by creating them of lightweight stainless steel. I think they'd make a fun summertime addition indoors or out, and considering the average plastic pinwheel goes for $2 or less, these are actually a little pricey at $15 each.

Peugeot 'Tresses' Pepper and Salt Mill Set

Stainless steel is always great because of it's durability and timeless appeal, but it also has an unfortunately low number of options when it comes to appearance. And although stainless steel pretty much always looks like stainless steel, this Peugeot 'Tresses' Pepper and Salt Mill Set has a slightly different look thanks to a sophisticated braided design. The mills are adjustable to your personal grind preference, come pre-filled with peppercorns and sea salt crystals, and have a lifetime warranty. $170.99.

Wendy Stevens La Camisa, Handbag of the Day

While working in a New York City nightclub, artist Wendy Stevens saw the need for durable handbags that were just large enough to hold the necessities of a night on the town. Inspired by the city's subways, telephone booths and elevators, she began designing bags made from sheet metal. The results are modern and sleek bags that can not only withstand a night on the town, but stand out for their beauty. My favorite is the La Camisa bag. Made from hand-fabricated stainless steel and accented with red leather, this bag is just large enough for your lipstick, money and cell phone. It also might come in handy as a weapon should your fellow-partiers get out of hand. $845.

Gus* Stainless Steel Cube

The Gus* Stainless Steel Cube is an occasional table, meant to be used as a functional piece of furniture in a modern/minimalist space. It's size and simplicity certainly make it appropriate for such a use. But fans of modern art (or cubism) might be more interested in this as a stand-alone showpiece, instead of hiding it under a lamp or some coffee table books. It measures 18-cubic inches and is made of brushed steel with polished edges. Price: $605.

Carrol Boyes Nutcracker

When I was a child my mother had a pair of silver buttons in the shape of a man and a woman that I was fascinated with. In order to fasten them you had to join the man and the woman together. The man and woman on this Carrol Boyes nutcracker are not nearly so lucky. They will complete their nutcracking forever primly back to back. This stainless steel piece sells for $63.

Boyes is a South African designer who takes her inspiration for her home decor from the human body and sells a wide variety of flatware and furniture. The company also works with ten international charities to help raise funding for HIV, literacy, hunger and other causes.

Stainless Steel Playing Cards

They may not make the most practical deck, but they're certainly going to prevent cheating at your next poker game. These Stainless Steel Playing Cards come in a full-sheet and the individual cards can be punched out to make a standard-sized deck. They can also be left in the sheet and framed. The updated, but recognizably classic, characters and card designs are lightly etched into the steel and the back sides of the cards have a zebra pattern. Price: $351.

Issey Miyake TO 001 Watch

At one point, the "watch of the future" was a digital one, but as time passed, the stylistic virtues of analog watches began to outweigh the easy readability and multiple functions of digital watches. The fact that digital watches almost unfailingly attached to plastic bands for nearly two decades didn't help. Without a scrap of plastic in sight, Issey Miyake's TO 001 Watch really looks like the "watch of the future." It looks as though it has simply been sculpted from a piece of metal, yet it is fully functional. The ultra-sleek watch is entirely made of stainless steel, with a silvery dial, covered with a fine glass face, and a metal strap. It is packaged in a metal gift box, too. Price: $450.

Jean d'Eve Sectora Watch

Who says a watch dial has to have a 360º dial? The Sectora watch from Jean d’Eve has hour and minute hands that move over a 120º angle. Their latest model is a new automatic version which uses a modified automatic ETA caliber 2892 movement. The case is stainless steel and it has a sapphire crystal. The Jean d'Eve website has a neat animated gif that shows this unique watch in action (when it hits the hour mark it dramatically snaps back to the start).

LaCava Reflection Sink

If you tend to avoid your own reflection in the bathroom mirror in the morning this is not the sink for you. The Reflection sink from Chicago-based La Cava Design is made of satin stainless steel that gleams like a mirror. The wall mounted double vanity shown here has a wood frame that is available in a choice of wenge, pickled oak or ash gray. It sells for $8,400.

Charriol Kucha Watch

Meow! The Charriol Kucha watch is designed for women with a love of feline style.  The word Kucha is Swahili for claws and it has diamond set claws curving over the stainless steel case. The watch has four dial variations with matching straps: panther, tiger, white or pink mother of pearl. It sells for $1.340 and was chosen as the ladies watch of the year for 2005 by Swiss watch magazines Montres Passion and Uhren Welt. I wonder what watches it beat out since this particular style isn't quite working for me.
