Porsche 918 Spyder Heading to Production for $845,000

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Porsche 918 Spyder

At the Geneva Motor Show last year, Porsche wowed the crowds with the 918 Spyder. A conceptual successor to the Carrera GT, the 918 Spyder showed what a hybrid could be in the extreme. Greeted by positive reactions, Porsche approved the model for production, and has now announced that it is accepting early orders.

The production version packs a 4.0-liter V8 engine and a pair of electric motors, working in unison to deliver 718 horsepower for a 3.1-second sprint to sixty and an impressive 78 miles per gallon. Only 918 examples will be offered, each fetching $845,000.

Porsche Boxster Spyder to Debut at LA Auto Show

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

In the world of high-performance sportscars, lighter means faster. That's why Porsche is preparing to take the wraps off the new Boxster Spyder.

Based on its entry-level roadster, the Boxster Spyder benefits from an aggressive weigh-reduction program to cut some 176 pounds off the stock model's curb weight, thanks in part to a lighter roof mechanism. The German automaker has also pulled an extra ten horses out of the direct-injection 3.4-liter flat six for a total of 320hp, driving the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to drop the 0-60 time down to 4.6 seconds.

Of course the "less is more" philosophy comes with a commensurately exclusive price tag of $61,200. The 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder will make its debut early next month at the LA Auto Show, but we've got a sneak preview for you right here in the high-resolution image gallery below.

2009 Frankfurt Auto Show: Audi R8 5.2 FSI Spyder

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

It's been a long time coming, but the Audi R8 Spider is finally here. The convertible version of Audi's mid-engine supercar debuted at the Frankfurt auto show after months of speculation, finally giving enthusiasts the car they want.

The design is essentially the same as the R8 coupe, but replaces the fixed roof with a folding soft-top. Gone as well are the iconic side blades that characterize the coupe's profile. The structural reinforcement and collapsing roof structure add an extra 476 lbs to the curb weight, but the 525-horsepower V10 engine should have no problem hauling the extra heft in return for the open-air experience and unmitigated exhaust note.

Bombardier Spyder Roadster

I was driving back from a meeting this morning listening to a radio show discussing the Bombardier Spyder. One host was arguing that the new roadster trike was perfect for middle-aged men like himself who were interested in the motorcycle experience but worried about falling over. The other host argued that no man with any self-esteem what so ever would be caught dead on this thing instead of a real bike. Either way it's a distinctive vehicle, looking a bit like a regular motorcycle from the back but more like a riding lawnmower from the front. It has a 106 horsepower Rotax 990cc V-twin engine, a five-speed transmission, anti-lock brakes and a stability control system. The Can-Am Spyder roadster sells for $14,999 and comes in either yellow or silver. It will be available in the U.S. this fall.

Piloti Spyder Driving Shoes

When it comes to driving footwear, there are good ideas and then there are bad ideas.

A good idea? Piloti Spyder SV Series Driving Shoes.
A bad idea? Manolo Blahniks.

The driving shoe of choice for car-world enthusiasts, the Pilotis are not like your everyday athletic shoe. With a sleeker tread and narrower sole sides, these shoes are designed to avoid getting snagged on car pedals. Optimized for stability and walking comfort, Pilotis boast thick, stiff soles. The trademarked Roll Control heel helps drivers ensure that they have precise handling and control over the amount of pressure applied to the gas or the brake pedals.

And while you might not want to stumble into Bungalow 8 wearing a pair (after all, the Manolo's are better for that), the next time you are zipping along the Autobahn or flying through the streets of Monte Carlo, be sure to bring your Pilotis. Price $74.95.
