The Fashion Statement: Will 2011 be the Year of the Hat?

Hats worn for the express purpose of style hasn't been widely popular since the '20s. Millinery did have a brief comeback in the '80s when Princess Diana gave visibility to the British tradition of wearing hats for special occasions. Now Kate Middleton is again putting a modern face under the British topper. And numerous designers on both sides of the pond made the hat a central focus of their spring/summer runway collections. And then there is Lady Gaga entertaining us all with her theatrical chapeaus.

Not since the '80s have we seen so many hats! So we wonder: Could 2011 be the year of the hat?

Arguably the most buzzed about accessory of the season was the colorful, wide-brimmed hat like the one above at Prada. Badgley Mischka and Marc Jacobs channeled Jodi Foster in Taxi Driver with their bright pink versions shown over hair that had been appropriately curled and frizzed. Sally Field in The Flying Nun would have fit right in at Missoni where almost every model wore hats that flapped down the runway like wings. And Alberta Ferretti went boho by pairing floppy fringed brims with her collection of gauzy ethereal gowns.

Yesterday we had a totally non-girly tote and now today it's pink and bows all the way. The Fashion Statement: A Velvet Revolution

Velvet usually comes out of mothballs about once a year: the holidays. Other than that, the fabric that has always stood for wealth and luxury tends to spend more time on settees and chaises than on warm bodies. That is, until now.

Velvet's not so underground anymore thanks to European and American designers who used bolt after bolt of it in the fall 2009 collections. And each one has manipulated the short dense pile into much more than just eveningwear.

Ralph Lauren, Fendi and Bottega Veneta created velvet rose-colored cap-sleeved frocks, neutral strapless cocktail dresses and burnt-orange slouchy day dresses, respectively. Chloé, Sonia Rykiel and Ralph Lauren went for velvet harem pants, mostly in dark green and black. Gianfranco Ferré, Lanvin and Elie Saab blew fashion watchers away with their long black velvet gowns with structured cap sleeves à la the '40s.

Aquilano.Rimondi-a new talented design duo from Italy-draped, cut and sewed bright red velvet into a belted cocoon coat-dress that hits just above the knee. Superb.

But if two designers can turn velvet into a full-blown trend of the season, it's Miuccia Prada and Marc Jacobs. Interestingly enough, both fashion forces took some yellow with their velvet.

Jacobs ran with the '80s-the decade he first hit the fashion scene- with neon yellow cocktail dresses like the one pictured above. Another yellow cocktail dress wraps its wearer like a mummy in wide-bands of velvet. (Fergie took this look out for a spin on the red carpet recently, only in electric blue.)

Prada reached back to a darker mood in the '40s and came up with a more toxic shade of yellow. This disconcerting yellow hovering somewhere between poison and putrid was made into a deep V-neck and stitched to a tweed skirt. Burned-out velvet made appearances on double-breasted coats and V-neck dresses (sometimes awkwardly topped with fur).

Dita Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

It's like a big rainbow disco ball! I love it, although honestly I don't think I'd ever have the guts to wear it. It's the Dita Shoulder Bag by Sonia Rykiel and it's made of luxe black calfskin suede that's studded with hundreds (even thousands maybe?) of multi-colored crystals. It also has chain handles (that seem to be all the rage lately) and it can widen to have more interior room via stylish snaps on both sides. Fully lined (in a subtle stripe pattern) with plenty of pockets and compartments. $3,045

Woven Face Tote, Handbag of the Day

Here's a designer tote that definitely falls into the 'bold and bright' category! Featuring a cheerful face woven in bright colors on vibrant purple wool, the Woven Face Tote (they didn't exactly get creative with the name there, did they?) from Sonia by Sonia Rykiel has a zipper closure on the top (gotta love that nothing will come tumbling out unexpectedly), a luxe quilted lining, and padded handles. The 'woven face' is what I would describe as a mix of wimsical and primitive, with details like dark eyelashes and bright heart-shaped cheeks making the real statement. $320

Studs on brown leather make somewhat of a change from the harder studs on black that has been fairly prevalent with handbags lately. The silver seems more like an accent, and less like a direct statement, and the ever so slightly softer look is more versatile than others we've seen. The Studded Pocket Bag by Sonia Rykiel has an unstructured design that allows it to expand and contract depending on its contents.
