Asia's Best Design Hotels

Asia's best design hotels

Modern architecture-loving travelers will love the destinations featured by our friends over at Departures . The magazine took a look at Asia's coolest design hotels, which are some of the most impressive properties in Shanghai, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore. These properties are "sleek super towers and seemingly impossible, imagination-defying structures" according to the luxury magazine that is published by American Express publishing.

Today's Asian luxury hotels are influencing Western hotels, while once it was the opposite, according to Edwin Heathcote, architectural critic for the Financial Times. The most significant new hotels each have something that is memorable, the Departures piece explains. In some, it's the restaurant that's the most memorable; in others, it's a soaring sky bar or a penthouse suite. In others it is the structures themselves that are redefining skylines.

Hong Kong
According to Departures, Hong Kong has also opened itself up to a host of contemporary international architects who have put their stamp on the city, from Foster + Partners to Cesar Pelli to I. M. Pei. Recently, at the 117-room Upper House (from $425), local Andre Fu-known for doing the home of actress Michelle Yeoh-has created an ideal, almost spiritual, balance of uncluttered spaces. "The design is not Asian in a literal manner," Fu told Departures, "but it reflects a subtle Asian sensitivity." He has achieved this with pools of water, bamboo enclosures, natural timber, shoji glass, limestone and lacquered paper panels. Additional design highlights include the Sky Bridge on the 49th floor, which crosses a 130-foot-high atrium; the hotel's Bedonia stone façade (see photo above) by one of Britain's hottest architect-designers, Thomas Heatherwick; and freestanding bathtubs with panoramic harbor or island views.

There is yet another reason to visit the Marina Bay Sands, Singapore's massive resort casino complex., the world's first ArtScience museum. The museum, which will open in February is the latest attraction at the $5.5 billion gambling complex that features celebrity chef restaurants, luxury shopping and the sky park, a park that is 60 stories up and links the resort's three towers. The museum was designed by architect Moshe Safie and is reminiscent of a lotus flower (it's the structure under construction on the left from this picture taken back in April at the time of the opening of the first phase of the project). The design is also supposed to represent a welcoming hand and

The ArtScience museum is due to open on Feb 17 at 1:18 p.m., a time chosen by a feng shui master as being auspicious. The museum has 10 "fingers" anchored by a round base in the middle and each finger holds gallery spaces with skylights at the "fingertips." The curved roof of the museum harvests rainwater, sending it to a reflecting pool. There are a total of 21 gallery spaces that will embrace achievements in both art and science. The 60,000 square feet of space will include Leonardo DaVinci's Flying Machine and a celebration of the KongMing lantern, the sky lantern popular in Asia. Traveling exhibitions will change every three to six months.

Linde Werdelin 3-Timer Racing Singapore Edition Watch

As a special piece for E'colleczione in Singapore, Linde Werdelin is making a limited edition of 18 pieces for the race loving crowd. There will be 9 pieces in red, and 9 in yellow of this 3-Timer watch variation. The caseback will also have a special "Racing" engraving. The release of the watch is meant to go together with the Grand Prix race in Singapore. The standard 46mm wide steel 3-Timer watch has been enhanced with red or yellow in the bezel, and inside of the hex screws on the case and the strap. The perforated leather strap again has either yellow or red inside of the small holes. The dial is textured and black, and everything else you like about the 3-Timer GMT watch. Inside the watch is a Swiss 2893 automatic GMT movement. Go here for a full review of the Linde Werdelin 3-Timer watch. Price for this limited Racing edition of the 3-Timer watch will be about 5,280 euros for each of the 18 pieces, available exclusively in Singapore.

Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Selling Off The Singapore Raffles Hotel

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Last year I mentioned that Saudi multi-billionaire Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal was looking to unload Singapore's historic Raffles Hotel as part of his great hotel sell-off. At that point the price was reported to be $450 million but it looks like he was willing to accept a lot less. The hotel has been sold to Qatari Diar investment fund in a deal worth $275 million. The legendary hotel was once the home of writer Somerset Maugham and has been around since 1887. This is the hotel that gave us the cocktail known as the Singapore Sling and has been a stopping place for decades of movie stars.

The London Times reports that the deal includes plans to refurbish the hotel and revamp the adjacent retail and leisure facilities adding another 78 guest rooms. Fairmont Raffles would continue to run the hotel. Fairmont Raffles was created from the merger four years ago of the Fairmont and Raffles groups and runs more than 100 hotels. Qatari Diar already owns Le Royal Monceau in Paris, which is set to reopen under the Raffles brand this year after its Philippe Starck-led makeover.

Franck Muller Conquistador Singapore Grand Prix Watch

I recently spoke about Arnold Schwarzenegger visiting a Franck Muller store. He might have gone in to check out a watch such as this. Right out of a financially troubled Franck Muller comes this beast of a luxury timepiece. I've never seen anything like it from the brand, and this Conquistador Singapore Grand Prix watch certainly is aimed at one of the few places right now where you can bet on luxury watch sales still taking place.

There are other versions of this new style Conquistador watch. The dramatic colors and design are what really get me. It is like Franck Muller is targeting Roger Dubuis in some odd manner it seems with these "talk to me designs." This particular watch looks like a perfect compliment to Batman's The Joker attire. Don't you think?

Case comes in two forms. Either titanium and ergal (a type of aluminum alloy - think the red color on the watch case) or titanium and 18k rose gold. Size is 48mm wide by 62mm tall, and 14mm thick. Front and rear crystal is sapphire, of course. Inside the "statement rich" timepiece is an automatic Franck Muller FM caliber 7000 chronograph movement. Notable is the high level of decoration and platinum automatic rotor in the movement. The watch is limited to 80 pieces in the titanium and ergal, and 80 pieces in the titanium and gold.

The celebrity chef lineups for the Marina Bay Sands resort in Singapore has been revealed and they are taking no chances at the $5 billion resort, bringing out some of the world's culinary big guns. The resort will feature restaurants by famous chefs from around the world. The six chefs announced include Mario Batali (New York), Daniel Boulud (New York), Wolfgang Puck (Los Angeles), Santi Santamaria (Barcelona), Guy Savoy (Paris) and Tetsuya Wakuda (Sydney). Chefs Santi Santamaria, Guy Savoy and Tetsuya Wakuda will have their restaurants on the mezzanine layer of the casino while Mario Batali, Daniel Boulud and Wolfgang Puck will have signature restaurants situated near Marina Bay Sands Theatres. Each of the six chefs is personally involved in the concepts, menus, and interior design of the six different restaurants.

When completed, Marina Bay Sands will feature have approximately 2,500 luxury hotel rooms, the rooftop Sands SkyPark, a museum, Las Vegas- style gaming, the Paiza Club for premium players, theatres, entertainment, an outdoor event plaza, and shopping and dining venues. In a press release, Batali calls the resort "the most exciting project I have ever been involved with" but the most philosophical quotes come from the European chefs. Santi Santamaria ponders the possibilities of "culinary poetry" saying he wants his cuisine to "delight the senses and awaken emotional memories with a cuisine of wisdom." Guy Savoy expresses a similar view saying that" cuisine is the art of instantaneously turning produce suffused with history into happiness." They sound like perfect fits for a city that prides itself on the quality and infinite variety of its food.
