Stephen Colbert Puts Portrait Up For Auction For Charity

If you've watched "The Colbert Report" you may have seen this work of art. "Portrait 5, Stephen(s)" is the latest in a series of portraits of the host. The work was been altered by several different artists including Frank Stella, Shepard Fairey and Andres Serrano in a segment on the show in December that featured author, actor and art collector Steve Martin. Fairey added an Obey symbol to the image and Serrano scribbled on devil horns and a Hitler mustache.

What was once a skit is now going to have the ultimate financial test of a work of art, a turn on the auction block. It will be sold March 8 by auction house Phillips de Pury & Company. Proceds will benefit DonorsChoose.org, a nonprofit which raises money for school projects for children. The auction will be taped and air in a future episode of the program. The work is being offered without an estimate.

Banksy Art Up For Auction

A piece of art that controversial artist Banksy created for Greenpeace will be sold at Bonhams London along with other of his work at the Urban Art auction on January 11. The piece, which was created for Greenpeace's Save or Delete campaign to draw attention to deforestation, features characters from Disney's The Jungle Book bound, blindfolded and facing an executioner against a backdrop of ravaged tree stumps. The piece was printed but never put into circulation because of the "protectionist policies at Disney." The piece is estimated at £60,000 - 80,000, the unique piece (lot 67) and was given to the vendor by the artist himself. The sale also features many other Banksy works at a variety of price points. Prices for Banksy have continued to rise in recent years and the success of his now-Oscar-buzzed documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop, has only contributed to his fame.

Banksy didn't earn the catalog cover, that honor went to American artist Shepard Fairey whose 'Peace Goddess on Wood', 2008 is estimated at £8,000 - 12,000. Other sale highlights include a performance piece by American graffiti artist, Futura 2000, forThe Clash's Combat Rock tour. Futura 2000 was commissioned to paint the stage backdrop for The Clash whilst they performed. The piece is estimated at £15,000 – 20,000, and is believed to be the only work to have survived from the gigs.

Banksy's Latest Coup: Exit Through the Gift Shop

banksy

What would cause the world's most elusive and most illustrious street artist to make a film with never before seen insights into his own life? To get back at a man who used his name and took advantage of his friendship of course. The art world is abuzz with the latest work from the genius that is Banksy, Exit Through the Gift Shop. While the film is not about Banksy, as the hype would have you believe, it's worth seeing for the rare footage into both Banksy's physical and mental studio.

To tell you straight off, you're not going to see Banksy in the film. You're going to see a hooded figure, face blurred and voice disguised, that may or may not be Banksy, embedding the narration with signature Banksy quips. The most revealing clue into who Banksy is, who some sources peg as Robin Gunningham, is a wedding ring on a male hand, shown when the artist is at work. And that Banksy has a team of assistants, any one of whom could have played Banksy in the film, to help produce the massive work. But trying to peg the identity of Banksy is of course not the point of the film.

What you are going to see is a giant art world hoax surrounding amateur filmmaker, Thierry Guetta, turned amateur artist, Mister Brainwash. There's no information given on how involved Bansky was in the actual filmmaking, although by putting his name on the resulting work, it's clear he directed the narrative into a con story, a con named Mister Brainwash.

Thierry Guetta was a successful L.A. storekeeper who lived with a camcorder glued to his hand. After years of recording his day-to-day life, he stumbled upon something worth filming after visiting his cousin, the Atari-cum-mosaic inclined street artist Space Invader. He followed him for years, leading to his entry into the underground scene, filming the movement's multitude of stars: Swoon, Neckface, Poster Boy, Zevs, and Shepard Fairey. After failing to get any ins toward the most coveted subject of them all, Banksy, Guetta's luck changed when Fairey rang him up one day. Banksy was in L.A. and needed someone to show him around. Following his guidance into where to paint in L.A., Guetta gained Banksy's trust and friendship. As Banksy's entourage didn't contain a more worthy photographer, he began bringing Guetta into his more outlandish stunts, for posterity's sake, including the installation of a Guantanamo Bay prisoner inside Disneyland.

Celebrities Lend Signatures And More To Gay Marriage Posters

A variety of celebrities have put their names to a Shepard Fairey print in order to support gay marriage. More than 80 celebrities including Julia Roberts, Charlie Sheen, Natalie Portman and many others have signed "Defend Equality - Love Unites" original prints with a design by Shepard Fairey. Some celebrities took a unique approach to signing. Jared Leto wrote out the language of California's Proposition 8 ballot initiative (which stipulates that marriage is only between a man and a woman) on the back of his Fairey print, burned it and put the ashes in a clear glass urn with the inscription, "Here lies within, the remains of Proposition 8, may it rest in peace." Virginia Madsen added a collage to her poster. The pieces will be sold in online auctions next month. On November 12, Shepard Fairey will take part in the official launch event at the Andaz West Hollywood hotel. VIP tickets for the event are $100.

Shepard Fairey Art on Kenwood Artists Series Wine

I've been a fan of artist Shepard Fairey for years but he has sprung into the mainstream lately. Not only has his Obama poster been a key part of the campaign but Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art hosting the first museum survey of Shepard Fairey's street art. Now Shepard Fairey has his own wine. Kenwood Vineyards has commission a piece from Shepard Fairey for the 30th Anniversary Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon. The choice is a bit of a departure from a series that has featured artists like Van Gogh and Picasso but the 2004 vintage will showcase Fairey's "Peace Woman."

The 2004 Artist Series has a nose of black currant, Ceylon tea leaf and dark chocolate with flavors of black currant, Italian plum, cocoa and spice. it can be enjoyed now or cellared. The wine was aged in small French oak barrels for 30 months and the final Artist Series blend was assembled from the best of these barrels, with a small percentage of Malbec included for additional complexity and polish. Following bottling, it was cellared at the winery for 18 months prior to release. There were 2,146 cases were produced and it sells for $70 a bottle.

First Shepard Fairey Survey to Open at Boston's ICA

Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art has announced it will host the first museum survey of Shepard Fairey's provocative street art. The exhibition is aptly named Supply and Demand (recall how tricky it was to get your hands on Fairey's Obama gear) and will chronicle Fairey's 20-year reign as the guerrilla multi-media operative he is. It will also include a new mural commissioned specifically for the museum. Fairey is heavily involved in the plans -- he'll be plastering lucky Boston with public works of art and will even DJ on opening night.

Known for his shape-shifting tendencies -- the artist regularly jumps the boundaries between commercial and fine art -- Fairey's point of view is unwavering. "The real message behind most of my work is 'question everything,'" he told ICA curators.

The exhibit opens February 6 and will run through August 16.

High Art: Katy Rodriguez Shows at John Lautner's Harpel House

On Sunday evening, a select group of Los Angeles design luminaries will converge at the intersection of fashion and architecture -- Katy Rodriguez's show at John Lautner's Harpel residence. Models and It Gals like Chloe Sevigny and Christina Ricci will be wearing Rodriguez's latest designs and mingling with guests including artists Shepard Fairey and Raymond Pettibon.

Judging from the collection, it feels like the perfect setting -- the clothes have an architectural quality, and they're filled with the rich, subtle detailing that distinguishes good design from the ordinary, or the ostentatious.

The Harpel house has been meticulously restored by Rodriguez's business partner Mark Haddawy. He's spent the past two years removing a superfluous second story and bringing the house back to its original, sublime logic.

Between the high fashion and the cityscape below, the views should be pretty spectacular. Check out the gallery to see a few images of the Harpel house and more pieces from Rodriguez's Spring/Summer 2009 collection.

Shepard Fairey Barack Obama Painting Auctioned For Charity

Filed under: Auctions, Celebrity Shopping, Art, Charity

When contemporary art cult fave Shepard Fairey started "campaigning" for Barack Obama, he created original collages assembling inspiring portraits of Obama above titles like HOPE, PROGRESS and CHANGE. We saw them silkscreened on tee shirts worn by the likes of Ryan Phillippe that soon became impossible to get, selling for thousands on eBay. Now for the true connoisseur -- of politics and art -- the rare opportunity exists to bid on one of the original three pieces, OBAMA HOPE. Currently at $60,000, the piece is being auctioned by Westport, CT-based CharityBuzz, which will donate profits to the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, providing access to the arts to disadvantaged urban youth. CharityBuzz will accept bids until July 24, but if you miss this potentially revolutionary piece of art, you can at least order the sticker version online at Sticker Robot. Big spender yours truly just snagged ten of them.
