Sears Discounts Jewelry For Holiday Season

Sears may not be the place you think of for fine jewelry but when it comes to deep discounts the popular brand is making sure it can't be beat. Sears has pared 40 to 60 percent off many of their items including diamond earrings and bracelets. The company has sent out a catalog, which is also available in an online form, that focuses on jewelry featurng 242 items available at deep discounts.

Will this year be a jewelry holiday? Last year was an annus horribilis for the jewelry industry and everyone from the high-end couture brands to the department store chains was stuck with a lot of inventory and forced to make deep discounts. For jewelry brands the combination of year-end holiday pressure and frantic male shoppers is typically a win and so many brands are making the big push now hoping for a last minute boost. While Sears isn't where you might normally consider doing jewelry shopping they can be a great resources for simple pieces like gold hoops or stud earrings.

Celebrity Clothing Lines Hanging By a Thread

Thanks to the imploding economy, once-thriving clothing lines from celebs like Sarah Jessica Parker (above), Ashley Judd, Venus Williams and LL Cool J could quite possibly go out of business, AdAge reports. Following the worst holiday shopping season in four decades, numerous retailers that partnered with the star's brands are going bankrupt or being liquidated, taking the celebrity clothing lines with them. "Even before the economy went bad, the market became over-saturated with celebrity brands," Victoria Brynner, CEO of Stardust Visions, a boutique entertainment-marketing service that brokers celebrity endorsements, tells the magazine. And Dan Butler, VP of merchandising and retail operations at the National Retail Federation, says more celeb lines will inevitably disappear.

Among the high-profile victims so far:
• Sarah Jessica Parker's Bitten clothing is left without a retail partner, as the Steve and Barry chain went bankrupt int November and will liquidate all 270 of its stores this year.
• Tennis ace Venus Williams' Eleven line, Amanda Bynes' Dear line, and surfer Laird Hamilton's Wonderwall brand are all casualties of Steve & Barry's bustup as well.
• Ashley Judd's eponymous clothing line will likely go down with Goody's, which is being liquidated with rights to Judd's brand being auctioned off along with Goody's bankrupted stores.
• LL Cool J's apparel line is on life support at Sears, and is now being advertised at up to 50% off online. Same-store sales at Sears were down 12.8% in December.

Sears Adds A Touch of Luxury

Luxury items at Sears? We've seen luxury come to Costco and Wal-Mart and now Sears is trying to tempt buyers with items that skew toward the higher end. Because Kmart and Sears merged, Sears has the right to sell Martha Stewart goods in Sears Roebuck stores but they aren't taking that option since Martha recently announced to that she will be selling her higher-end wares at Macy's. Instead Sears has a new strategy to sell ready-to-assemble furniture, add more Lands' End mini-stores inside Sear's stores and create a private label line of bed and bath products called Everyday Luxe. The Everyday Luxe line is already for sale on the internet and features 400-thread-count duvets and 500-thread-count sheets. Sheet sets start at $99.99 for Queen.
