Shelby SuperCars Reportedly to Take on the Bugatti Veyron SS

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Bugatti and SSC have been playing a high-speed game of cat and mouse for the past several years. In 2005, Bugatti set a production car speed record with the original Veyron, clocked at 253.8 miles per hour. Two years later, independent automaker Shelby SuperCars (no relation to the Carroll Shelby of Cobra fame) came along with the Ultimate Aero and picked up the trophy with a 256.1 mph run. Just a couple of weeks ago, Bugatti reclaimed the prize with the new Veyron Super Sport at 267.8 miles per hour. Now reports indicate that SSC is working on its own challenger to up the ante and take the prize back to its home base in the United States.

Little in the way of details are available at this point, but SSC has retained the services of one Jason Castriota, formerly of Pininfarina and Bertone, to pen a new shape for its new supercar. Reports suggest that the new SSC Ultimate Aero could debut yet this summer, after which a Guinness-certified record attempt will surely be in the cards.
