Roman Abramovich, Last Week's Big Art Spender

It seems that whenever a question of big spending comes up all around the world, one name is always bandied about. Mukesh Ambani may be the world's richest man but it's Roman Abramovich who does the most spending. And he was at it again last week busy at both Sotheby's and Christie's. The Art Newspaper reports that the Russian billionaire bought both Francis Bacon's Triptych, 1976, which sold at Sotheby's New York for $86.3 million and Lucian Freud's Benefits Supervisor Sleeping, 1995, which sold at Christie's for $33.6 million. Why the interest in art from a man who is more famous for his real estate and his huge yachts? Apparently he's looking to furnish his London home. and his girlfriend, Dasha Zhukova, is also an art lover who is planning to is to open a new gallery in Moscow specializing in contemporary art.

Abramovich Picks Up Wildcat Ridge

Free-spending Russian billion Roman Abramovich is at it again. Just a week after we learned that he is working on a home that will be the most expensive private residence in Britain, we learn he's also picked up an Aspen home. This isn't just any Aspen home, this is Wildcat Ridge, the modern home of Leon Hirsch. We've been following Hirsch's struggle to sell this home since February of 2005. Back then Hirsch listed his home for $35 million. Since then he's switched real estate brokers a couple of times and has even put it up for actuion a couple of times with no luck. Another man might have dropped his price looking for a sale but Hirsch's stubbornness seems to have paid off, he sold to Abramovich for $36.375 million.

Abramovich is getting quite a home. Wildcat Ridge has 11 bedrooms is perched at an elevation of 9,200 feet on Wildcat Ridge offering views for miles. The home, designed by Voorsanger Architects, has a dramatic folded plate roof and a large moss rock wall dividing the east and west wings of the building. The home gets its energy from 60 geothermal wells so that it is virtually self sufficient. The wells heat the home, driveway and pool during the winter months and provide cooling in the summer. It also comes with 32 pieces of furniture custom designed for the home.

Abramovich Plans London Palace

He's already rumored to be building the most expensive yacht in the world, now The Telegraph reports that Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich is working on a home that will be the most expensive private residence in Britain. The home in Knightsbridge, London will join two existing townhouses that are currently divided into apartments in Lowndes Square. The two-houses will be combined into one eight-bedroom home with a home theater, indoor swimming pool and steam room on eight stories total. The home is expected to be worth around £150 million when complete which actually makes it less expensive than the planned One Hyde Park Development. Abramovich will be keeping the classical exterior of the homes much the same but plans to rehab the interior in Russian opulence with the latest and greatest that money can buy.

Battle of the Russian Billionaires

Juicier than any Hollywood scuffle is what recently went down in the Hermes boutique in London recently. It was the battle of the Russian billionaires as Boris Berezovsky and Roman Abramovich got into a scuffle. The Daily Mail says that Berezovsky, shown above on the right, was shopping in Dolce & Gabbana when he spotted Abramovich, shown above on the left, in the nearby Hermes store and he ordered one of his bodyguards to bring him a $10 billion legal writ for Abramovich. When Berezovsky tried to go the Hermes shop, Abramovich's set of bodyguards tried to keep him out.

Words were exchanged, Berezovsky shoved to documents at Abramovich who let them fall to the floor and then according to witnesses the two groups went off in opposite directions. Why the bad blood? The two were once business partners, but Berezovksy says that Abramovich had pressured him into selling his stakes in the Sibneft oil firm, Russian Aluminium and the television channel ORT at bargain prices. Poor Berezovsky told ABC News that he made less than $1 billion from the sale of these assets which he could have sold for far more. He also says that Abramovich did this on the orders of Vladimir Putin.

Abramovich, for his part is remaining silent on the episode. For a man who values his privacy, Abramovich manages to get his name in the news a lot. But when you are one of the world's richest men and one of the spendiest too folks are bound to talk. How do we suggest these two resolve their differences: a friendly game of chess, hot oil wrestling, pistols at dawn?

Is There Anyone Willing To Go Bigger Than Abramovich?

Could there be a bigger yacht than Roman Abramovich's planned megayacht Eclipse? The Wall Street Journal covers the listing for Everest, a potential yacht, which if built would take the title of world's biggest private yacht. The 200 meter Everest would have 17 cabins plus an owner's suite. The suites would all have private terraces and there would be an outdoor swimming pool, gymnasium, sauna, steam room, cinema and more. The docking area would have room for boats and a small submarine. As the WSJ reports, the yacht would be too big to dock in any standard marina and would have to use a commercial cruise ship terminal. It sounds like if you need this much size it might be more fiscally prudent to just buy and old cruise ship and refit it to your specifications. If you want to build Everest it will cost you 350 million euros.

Abramovich Chills Out At Luxury Spa

It's been a while since we heard a good story about Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. Apparently the stress of being one of the world's richest men has gotten to Abramovich and he recently checked into the Lanserhof spa in Austria. When Abramovich needs to chill out he does it like no one else, flying in on his private Boeing 767 and keeping himself and his entourage in fine comfort.

Lanserhof, located near Innsbruck, is staffed by a team of doctors and everything from the music played to the design of the rooms and of the gardens was created with the utmost care and thought. The resort specializes in relieving stress, offering bio-energetics and relaxation techniques as well as more traditional spa treatments. Why might Abramovich be stressed out? Rumor has it his wife may be filing for divorce.
