Rocking

The Private Cloud

This looks like such an awesome bed! I absolutely love rocking chairs because they're so relaxing, and this Private Cloud bed looks like it would have much the same vibe. Besides the obvious "floating on a cloud" feeling you must get when in the bed, its open and expansive design conveys airy floating elements of the clouds when looking at the bed also. It's sure to make almost any room feel bigger and more open.

I do wonder, though, how easily it rocks. It might be nice to feel a little sway here and there as you reposition during the night, but if you're married do you have to be careful how you get up in the morning? You know, so you don't set it off rocking like crazy and make your poor spouse seasick?

Contraforma Mom Rocking Chair

Entirely upholstered in a blend of wool, viscose and flax, this chair proves that rocking chairs need not be uncomfortable or limited to use on the porch or the baby's room. The feminine curves of the funky olive green embellishments contrast nicely with the more masculine lines of the rocker, giving a decidedly modern feel to an old classic. Constructed of plywood and high resilience polyurethane, this cool cocoa brown rocker measures 33"x42.5"x39"h and is also is also available in olive green with brown embellishment. $1795.

Golden Cradle Studded with Diamonds, Rubies, and Emeralds

Wow, way back in the 18th century they really knew how to bling things up. And unlikely things too, like this baby's cradle. Covered in gold and set with more than 2,000 gems including diamonds, rubies, and emeralds, it's currently on display in Tokyo at a special exhibit that includes about 140 other antique treasures from the Ottoman Empire (which came before the Republic of Turkey). The items will be on display through September 24th in honor of the birth of Prince Hisahito to the Japanese Emporer's son Prince Akishino and his wife Princess Kiko (got that straight?). No word on what the cradle's valued at, although since it isn't for sale I guess it's more about admiring it's gaudy beauty than hoping to get one for yourself.

Smile Recliner

I think I like this Smile recliner more just because it has such a cheerful name, plus the design brings to mind visions of breezy summer days relaxing in a hammock. Created by David Trubridge, the Smile recliner is made to rock (obviously) and is suitable for indoors or out. Although not probably something good to have around children (it looks a little too tempting to try and rock over), this looks perfect to me for an open or enclosed porch, preferably by the seashore (I wish!). A fitted futon cushion is optional, as is an oil finish.

Noguchi Rocking Stool

We recently saw a Noguchi Table that had a beautiful, but simple, design that hinged on a carefully set up balancing system. The Noguchi Rocking Stool, which was designed in the mid 1940s around the same time as the table, uses another interesting balancing act. The kinetic stool was designed for children and moves with the user while it maintains an upright position. It is made of wood to "heirloom quality" specifications and has a polished metal frame. It measures just 14-in. across and 9.5-in. high. Price: $645.
