Louis Vuitton Tambour Regate Navy Limited Edition Watch

Louis Vuitton Tambour Regate Navy Limited Edition Watch
Louis Vuitton is really getting serious about its watches being near water. First we see a new Tambour Diving watch collection, and now a new yacht racing piece. This is the utility focused Tambour Regate Navy, and is a true regatta watch. The point of it is to have a specially designed chronograph that is able to quickly and easily measure a 10 minute countdown. So, in a sense, this watch has a chronograph complication, as well as a timer complication.

Keen on working with other people's movements and adding something special on top of that, Louis Vuitton uses a new movement call the caliber LV 171 that is a base Dubois Depraz automatic. The movement has a few features include the date and a flyback chronograph that measures up to 60 minutes. The main dial is used for the chrono seconds, while there is a subsidiary seconds dial for the minutes. Adjacent to the sub chrono dial is a subdial for the time's seconds. The main dial has the time, as well as a hand that moves around the entire dial counting down from 10 minutes. The flange ring on the dial is used to measure the countdown period. Why 10 minutes? This is the essential period regatta boats must take into consideration when traveling toward the starting line.

The case itself is in steel and 44mm wide using a standard Tambour style case. Lovely too look at, the dial is "designer" in fashion using shades of blue, black, and hints of red. The result is something attractive, but almost industrial in feel. Louis Vuitton will not make very many of these watches as the Tambour Ragate Navy watch will be limited to only 250 pieces. Still impressive, and very much in alignment with what I have come to expect from the brand.

Stallone Sports Ltd. Edition Panerai in 'The Expendables'

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Celebrity Shopping

In the past we've written about the special limited edition watches created by Panerai to celebrate the annual Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge sailing contests. Now one of the nautical timepieces has turned up in a totally different setting: on Sylvester Stallone's wrist in the new shoot-'em-up action flick The Expendables (above). This isn't just another example of pricey product placement, however; Stallone is a longtime Panerai fan who's credited with introducing the brand to the U.S., and the watch, a limited edition Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante 44 mm, is his personal wrist candy. The split-second chronograph is coated in Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) for durability while sailing or fighting bad guys, and only 500 numbered examples were produced.

Classic Yachts Battle It Out at Panerai Regatta in Antibes

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Events, Sports

The first Mediterranean leg of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge 2010 sponsored by the luxe Italian watch brand is now complete with an impressive showing amongst the elegant craft. The yachts Mariska, an auric cutter from 1908; Rowdy, a Marconi cutter from 1916; and Chaplin, a 16-metre Italian Navy vessel built in 1974, won in the "Big Boats", "Vintage" and "Classic" categories respectively during the race days at the famous French resort of Antibes on the Cote d'Azur. The winners each received a Radiomir Regatta 1/8th Second Titanio - 47 mm watch, specially created by Officine Panerai for this new season of regattas and produced in a limited edition of just 500 pieces. In total 51 boats split into seven categories participated in the event which was organized by the Yacht Club d'Antibes and the Club Nautique d'Antibes. Also present in Antibes, though not participating in the regattas, was Eilean, the classic 1936 yacht built by Scottish boatyard Fife, recently restored by Officine Panerai, which we wrote about in April.

Tony Hayward's Yacht To Race In Irish Regatta

BP chief executive Tony Hayward seems to have learned his lesson about yacht excursions. His luxury sailing yacht "Bob" will be racing again next week, at the Cork Week regatta in southern Ireland but a spokesman for BP told the Daily Telegraph that Hayward won't be on the yacht or in Cork. Hayward shares the yacht with Sam Laidlaw, the chief executive of Centrica, and Rob Gray, of Deutsche Bank. Cork Week runs from July 10 through July 16 and features a variety of races and other events.

The Classicist: Royal Ascot, Henley, Cowes & the English Summer Season

Royal ascot
The English summer season is in full swing with the year's most important and stylish sporting events on the horizon, maintaining the British traditions of horse racing, tennis, rowing, polo and sailing with elegance and ardor. Lord's Test Cricket has passed, but the Royal Ascot races, the Wimbledon tennis championships, Cartier International Polo, the Henley Royal Regatta and the yacht races at Cowes round out a full season's worth of sporting occasions that are as much fun to watch as to participate in. Herewith The Classicist's guide to the best in class (with a tip of the Panama to the London Telegraph); all you need is a pitcher of Pimm's:

Royal Ascot – June 15-19, Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire

Since it was founded by Queen Anne in 1711, the annual Royal Ascot races have become the highlight of the English social season. Ostensibly a five-day sporting event, it's also evolved into something of an immense fashion show, marked by the arrival of the Royal Family in ceremonial horse-drawn carriages every day. It has become the style for ladies to sport increasingly outrageous hats, and lately the traditional rules about "formal day dress" in the coveted Royal Enclosure have been rather loosely interpreted.

Regatta Revives Golden Age of Millionaire Yacht Races

regatta eleonora yacht
A new classic yacht regatta launching this summer aims to revive the "Big Class" races of the 1900s when millionaires and royalty pitted their massive sailboats against one another. The invitation-only Westward Cup Regatta, set to take place July 5 – 11 in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, is named in honor of the 100th anniversary of the launch of the famed Westward racing yacht, the fastest schooner in the world at the time. Staged by the Royal Yacht Squadron (Cowes), the famed New York Yacht Club, and the Yacht Club de Monaco (Monte Carlo), the Westward Regatta will feature large classic yachts competing for a prestigious prize. Among the contenders will be the 162-ft. Westward replica the Eleonora (above); the Brittania, a replica of King George V's royal yacht of the same name; the perfectly-restored Mariquita, built in 1911; and the Mariette designed in 1915 by the famous Nathaniel Herreshoff. In addition to the regatta itself several posh events are planned including an owner's dinner at the Royal Yacht Squadron and a banquet at Queen Victoria's Isle of Wight estate, Osborne House.

Corum Admiral's Cup Chronograph 48 Bol d'Or Mirabaud Watch

Corum Admiral's Cup Chronograph 48 Bol d'Or Mirabaud Watch
At some point in my life I should actually witness a regatta boat race. Just to see what all the fuss is about - and perhaps why people keep making watches for these events. It could be that only very rich people are able to afford uber-expensive boats for complex races and their often just-as-rich friends are the ones who watch. Whatever the case, it seems as though many luxury watch brands build watches in honor of a boat race as often as the tide comes and goes. Originally made for a now defunct boat race, the Corum Admiral's Cup has seen many forms. The most recent of which is as the Corum Admiral's Cup Chronograph 48 Bol d'Or Mirabaud - which takes the collection's classic look in a large 48mm wide case in titanium and rubber, and gives it a regal looking blue dial with red gold coated hands and hour markers. You might love the mixture of black, steel tone, blue, and gold... or you might hate it. The colors are directly taken from the official colors of the Bo d'Or Mirabaud regatta colors. Inside the watch is a COSC certified Corum CO753 automatic movement. The watch is limited to just 35 pieces.

Panerai Relaunches Classic 1936 Sailing Yacht

panerai 1936 yacht
Swiss-owned Italian luxury watch brand Panerai has restored a classic 1936 sailing yacht which will now serve as the company's flagship at exclusive yachting events. Panerai CEO and avid yachtsman Angelo Bonati just spent the last two-and-a-half years overseeing a complete restoration of the Eilean (above), a beautiful two-masted 72-ft. Bermudian ketch originally designed and built in 1936 by the legendary Fife boatyard in Scotland. When Bonati acquired the stylish yacht, whose design was inspired by the J-Class America's Cup racers of the 1930s, in 2006 it was a mastless, rusting wreck. He hired Italian naval restoration specialist Enrico Zacagni to undertake the extremely costly and painstaking 40,000-hour task. In addition to its Burmese teak skin and decking and perfectly recreated period details, the yacht now features a bespoke set of Panerai sailing instruments. The beautiful boat will represent the brand at the upcoming Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge.
