Woolly mammoth ivory is huge these days and here we have an elegant option for men looking to indulge. Derrick Cruz, the talent behind Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons, has created a beautiful and one-of-a-kind handmade Mammoth Straight Razor. The razor features a sheath made of 10,000-year-old woolly mammoth ivory, a fully restored vintage stainless steel blade, and a 19th century quartz Stanhope lens containing vintage micro-photography. The razor can be personalized with your own custom image on the lens and Scrimshaw engravings on the sheath for an even more unique gift.

The Mammoth Straight Razor comes packaged in a laser-engraved salvaged wood case with a black linen drawstring sleeve and a quarter ounce of Renaissance Wax for keeping the ivory looking its best. $3,500

45th Anniversary Razor from Baxter of California

45th anniversary razor baxter

Say what you will about all them newfangled electric razors, what with their sonic pulsing and whatnot. But there's something decidedly romantic and old-school about shaving with a straight razor. And if that's the way you want to shave your mug, there are worse ways to go than this stunning example from Baxter of California.

The men's grooming label is celebrating its 45th anniversary with this particular model, made by Hart Steel out of black steel with a 14-karat gold inlay and sheathed in a custom horse-hide sleeve from Makr. The special edition will set you back a princely $345, but you'll want to budget a little extra for the right product to complete the perfect shave.

The World's Most Expensive Razor for $30,000

Hommage, the Parisian purveyor of luxury grooming equipment, skincare and spa services for men, has created a limited edition, platinum-sheathed straight razor using the same ancient layering techniques as the Crusaders' swords, for $30,000. Called the Damascene Razor, the blade is hand-forged in Germany with 128 layers of legendary Damascene steel, with a rose and torsion pattern. The sheath is plated in pure platinum, treated to resist tarnishing.

The razor comes in a lacquered gift box of Tanzanian anigré wood. The name Damascene is often attributed to the steel swords made in the vicinity of Damascus, Syria and first gained its mythical reputation during the medieval Crusades. According to Hommage, "the blade of a Damascus steel sword was said to be able to cut a piece of silk in half as it fell to the ground and was strong enough to cut through a rock without losing its sharpness." And now you can use it to get the world's most expensive shave.

Tuuci Razor Shade Platform

The summer sun is one of the best parts of the season, but unfortunately also one of the greatest hazards. Staying in the shade isn't always easy, but having a Tuuci Razor Shade Platform might make a difference. Some of the inspiration behind this design from Dougan Clarke came from the idea that sitting under an umbrella can sometimes be frustrating as the sun moves throughout the day and your area of shade gets smaller and smaller. But this tilted assymetrical canopy spins 360 degrees so you can easily keep comfortable all morning and afternoon, and it's built of sturdy materials intended to last through the weather. $1500.

Limited Edition C.O. Bigelow Shave Set

This limited edition shaving set was custom-made for C.O. Bigelow to provide a luxury shaving experience for their customers. The razor has a modified Mach III blade attached to an extra-light, balanced handle. The brush is made from the fur of a silver tip badger, which is supposed to provide a much better lather with a richer feel than a brush made from, for example, a synthetic fiber. Both pieces are set on a chrome-plated stand, a stand which was plated in the same plating tank as Rolls Royces are. Price: $250.

The Razor's Edge

According to unconfirmed reports from my siblings, I missed Mother's Day entirely. With Father's Day looming menacingly on the horizon, I thank my lucky stars that Brave Soldier has commisioned this $149 carbon fiber razor by Razorkraft.

I mean, whose dad is complete without a featherweight, indestructible, space-age, artisanal razor?

And with next year's Mother's Day squarely on my calendar, I'm taking heart in Brave Soldier's assurances that this razor is suitable for  use by both men and women. Handcrafted in Silverado, California, each little razor takes the artist over four days to create. I, of course, took exactly nine months to create ... which is why I just may have to pony up $149 for the greatest artist ever: my mom.
