Classic Cars, Fine Wine & Cool Design: The Duncan Quinn Appellation Rally
Dashing designer Duncan Quinn, known for his roguish take on Savile Row style, is hosting the ultimate gentleman's getaway on Saturday, March 26 for those who appreciate classic cars, fine wine and gourmet meals as much as razor-sharp threads. The Duncan Quinn Appellation Rally features a fleet of wicked wheels from Manhattan's Classic Car Club – including a 1968 Porsche 911, an AC Cobra, Austin Mini (think The Italian Job), Jaguar E-Type roadster, and Ferrari Dino (above) – leaving the city for an overnight jaunt to a 2,500 acre spread in upstate New York via scenic byways and state parks in one hell of a stylish convoy.

There guests will be treated to cocktails followed by an impressive meal from celebrated chef Neil Ferguson accompanied an amazing selection of vintage wines, retiring afterwards to rustic suites. Following breakfast on Sunday also by Ferguson there will be a spot of skeet shooting before another scenic drive back to town. "Tweeds are an option, but style is a must," Quinn tells us. There are only 14 spots on the list, and several have already been filled; the price is $2,000 for singles and $3,000 per couple including the cars and everything except gas and speeding tickets. Call the designer's New York store at 212 226-7030 to reserve.

Edox WRC Rally Chronograph Automatic Watch

This is the mechanical version of the 2010 Edox WRC Rally collection of timepieces based on Edox's strategic relationship with rally car racing. The other watches are quartz movement based timepieces with red trim (that I wrote about here). The mechanical version gets a nice gold colored trim and a Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750 chronograph automatic movement. Dial is easy to read despite being a bit on the avant garde side, and mostly in carbon fiber. Funny how a few years ago I prophesied the the decline of using carbon fiber in timepieces, and that never really came to pass (though it did lessen!).

The automatic version of the Edox WRC Rally comes in a 45mm wide steel case with a sapphire crystal and has 100 meters of water resistance. The design is marked by the massive chronograph pushers and crown - especially the gold colored start and stop button. I like the little visual bulge on the left side of the case meant to balance out the visual weight on the right side of the case. Strap is tire tread patterned rubber and the price is set to be $3,120. Should be out soon.

lomarins 1200

London's packed with exotic and classic automobiles, but the usual array was no match for the parade that drove through the city's Mayfair neighborhood the other day. Some £10 million worth of classic motors – including a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Monza and a 1957 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France – were led through the streets to the home of fashion icon Alfred Dunhill by none other than former world champion Jody Scheckter in a 1952 Jaguar C-Type, with the South African ambassador riding shotgun.

The event was held to announce the launch of a new classic rally in South Africa. Modeled on the iconic Mille Miglia in Italy, the Lormarins 1200 will be held for the first time this October around the country's Western Cape wine region, with some 40-50 classics anticipated to participate.

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Events

It's Gumball 3000 time again. The rally for the rich and speedy, which dashes through Europe started on April 30 with 240 drivers in 120 cars. This year you can track the race online through the CoPilot satellite navigation service which lets you see where the drivers are and who is driving what. It's just part of the Gumball 3000 live website which includes video clips and pictures (the checkpoint in Vienna is shown here). The eight-day rally started in  London and will wind up in Los Angeles on May 7. Trouble has already hit some of the Gumballers, some cars were impounded by German police.
