We regularly report on what seems like an endless stream of new variants on Porsche's iconic 911. But the latest model from Porsche isn't a 911 at all: it's the ultimate version of the smaller Cayman.

Called the Cayman R, it packs more power and less weight: 330 horsepower from the 3.4-liter flat-six engine and 120 lbs less heft. There's also a revised suspension and an interior decked out in Alcantara microsuede and leather, plus straps for door handles (like on the similarly treated Boxster Spyder) as well as some visual tweaks to let everyone know this isn't an average Cayman.

With a 0-62 time below 5 seconds and a 175 mph top speed, the Cayman R was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show and will hit dealerships within a year from now with a $66,000 price tag.

This past weekend, Porsche's newly formed Cayman Interseries staged the second race of the inaugural season at the famous Road Atlanta racetrack n Braselton, Georgia. Established in 2009 by Napleton Porsche of Westmont, Illinois, the Cayman Interseries is North America's only auto racing championship featuring the exclusive use of the 320 hp Porsche Cayman S. Sanctioned by Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR), the Cayman Interseries is conducting its first official season in 2010 and will crown a pair of champion drivers in both the sprint and endurance racing formats. Races will be run on legendary circuits such as Daytona, Sebring, Road America, Watkins Glen, Road Atlanta and other premier venues. Every competing Porsche Cayman S is exclusively supplied and prepared by Napleton Porsche and each car competes with an assigned and specific heritage livery themed after a famous Porsche racecar from the past, such as Steve McQueen's Le Mans racer. Check out the video for details on the new Cayman spec-series, interviews with the series founders and on-track footage of the heritage livery-themed 2010 Porsche Caymans.

Porsches Escape Taxes in Norway with Creative Specifications

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Sometimes getting around oppressive tax laws requires a little bit of...shall we say, creativity. Which is exactly what the Norwegian importer for Porsche cars appears to be displaying with this latest loophole.

Although the Porsche Cayman and Boxster are built in neighboring Finland, next door in Norway they're subject to heavy tariffs due to their high horsepower outputs and carbon emissions. So what did the importer do? Cut the engine's output to below the threshold. The result is a coupe and convertible with 211 horsepower each – 44 and 34 hp less than what they leave the nearby factory with – which qualifies them for significant tax rebates: nearly $19,000 for the Cayman and over $15,000 for the Boxster. The kicker, though, is that according to the same spec sheet, the sportscars haven't suffered any performance degradation, leading us to wonder if the engines were really modified or if they just doctored the numbers.

TechArt Offers New Enhancements for the Porsche Cayman & Boxster

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Whereas once Porsches were limited basically to the 911 range, today the company has a wide range of vehicles to meet your expectations. But that's still only the starting point. The aftermarket is packed with companies offering customization for Porsches, including TechArt, which just released a modification kit for the entry-level Boxster convertible and Cayman coupe.

Among the modifications which TechArt has in store for Porsche's smallest vehicles are an array of aerodynamic enhancements, interior trim kits, suspension tweaks and new wheels. And while TechArt may have shied away from tuning the engine this time around, the visual mods should be enough to separate a customized Porsche from the factory-stock models driving the world's roads.
