9ff Speed9 Takes the 911 Turbo to the Next Level

A Porsche is special enough for most, but for those looking for a bit more, there is no shortage of German tuners that specialize in Zuffenhausen's finest who'll be glad to bring it to the next level. Arguably foremost among them is 9ff, the relatively new outfit that made its mark with the record-breaking GT9.

With the Essen aftermarket tuner show coming up next weekend, 9ff has prepared the new Speed9. Based on the latest 911 Turbo convertible, the Speed9 sacrifices its rear seats for a slick profile evocative of the iconic 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster, with enough ground effects to match. Naturally 9ff hasn't stopped at looks alone, boosting the twin-turbo engine up from 473 horsepower to a shocking 650. No official word on price or performance, but you can expect both to exceed expectations.

2009 Frankfurt Auto Show: Porsche 911 Turbo, GT3 RS and Sport Classic

Porsche has made a veritable science out of spinning off various variants from its iconic 911 range. The rear-engine sportscar can be ordered with two-wheel-drive or four; coupe, cabrio or targa; naturally-aspirated or turbo; and just about every permutation and combination thereof, to say nothing of special editions and the performance-oriented GT models. Since revising the entire range, Porsche has released new Turbo, Turbo Cabriolet, GT3 RS and Sport Classic models, all in the ramp-up to the Frankfurt Auto Show where the new models made their debut, and we were on hand to see them up close.

The Turbo coupe and Turbo Cabriolet pack a 3.8-liter engine with direct injection and variable turbochargers to offer up 500 horsepower at all four wheels. The GT3 RS is one of the most extreme variants in the 911 catalog, the GT3 RS drives 450 horsepower to the rear wheels in a track-oriented package with neon-colored wings and graphics, while the exclusive Sport Classic produces 403hp in a retro package. Even the largest Porsche dealers aren't likely to stock all three, so have a look in our high-resolution photo galleries below to see them each from all the angles.

Porsche to Unveil Limited Edition 911 Sport Classic in Frankfurt

Now that Bugatti has finished its run of special-edition Veyrons, it's Porsche's turn. The German sportscar-maker has a long history of creating special editions of its iconic 911 especially, and has followed up on its heritage with the new Sport Classic.

Characterized by a special paint job with tone-on-tone racing stripes, special wheels and a retro "duck-tail" spoiler, the 911 SC also packs an extra 23 horsepower for total output of 403. The suspension has also been lowered, and carbon fiber brakes promise to keep the driver out of trouble. Porsche has also given the 911 Sports Classic a special interior of woven and piped brown leather for an extra special touch. Porsche will unveil the new model at the upcoming Frankfurt auto show, and will only make 250 examples, each selling for €169,300 ($240,702 USD).

Porsche Unveils new 911 GT3 Cup for the Gentleman Racer

If you're thinking about starting your own career as a "gentleman racer", this is the machine you'll need: the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. It's one of the most popular race cars of all time, and is the staple machinery used in a whole variety of racing series in American, Europe and abroad. And for 2010, Porsche has released a newly revised version that is expected to debut at the Frankfurt auto show next month.

Based on the recently-released GT3 RS, the new GT3 Cup is treated to the same improvements as the rest of the revised 911 range. But from there it's all business. It packs the same 3.9-liter 450-hp flat-six engine as the street-legal GT3, but offers more downforce courtesy of extra wings and competition-spec suspension, wheels and more. It comes in white so each team can emblazon it with their own sponsors' logos, and sells for a cool 150,000 euros.

Dial 911: Porsche Unveils Hardcore New GT3 RS

Looking for the ultimate performance Porsche? You're likely to run into some divergent opinions on exactly which model that is. Most would agree that it lies in the 911 range, not the Cayenne sport-utility or Panamera sedan, but the iconic sportscar has more varieties than the Bugatti Veyron has special editions. Some would point to the latest all-wheel-drive 911 Turbo, others would go with the similarly turbocharged but rear-drive GT2, while others still prefer the basic purity of the naturally-aspirated GT3. But now Porsche has taken the wraps off the most hardcore, bare-bones version: the GT3 RS.

To unburden the newly revised 450-horsepower 3.8-liter Flat-Six engine, Porsche has taken out as much weight as it can, right down to the titanium exhaust system and lightweight lithium-ion battery. The German automaker has also fitted a revised PASM active suspension system and even variable engine mountings to make the 911 GT3 RS the most direct driving machine in its range, and given it the look-at-me graphics to let everyone know what it is. It'll set you back $132,800 after its official debut next month at the Frankfurt auto show.

Porsche Design Updates the Understated Flat Six Watch Range

When driving a high-performance sports car at speed, the last thing you want is to be squinting to see how early (or fashionably late) you're running. Which could explain why Porsche Design has gone to great lengths to make sure that its basic Flat Six watch line is easily readable at a glance.

Named after Porsche's iconic horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine layout, the Flat Six watch has just been updated and can be had in a variety of styles, colors and finishes,. Buyers can choose between white, black, blue or red dials, polished steel or PVD-coated cases, conventional or chronograph movements, rubber or steel bracelets and more. And while they may not be as flashy or avant-garde as other timepieces on the market – including some also made by Porsche Design – the updated Porsche Design Flat Six line will appeal to the same buyers who admire their timeless 911 sports cars.

Soccer Star Ronaldo's Porsche for Sale

Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo's black-on-black Porsche 911 convertible (above) is being offered for sale in the UK. As we reported back in January, the champion athlete who is set to play for Real Madrid after his club Manchester United accepted a record £80 million bid last week, totaled his Ferrari but walked away unscathed. The car on offer is a Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Tiptronic S which Ronaldo bought in 2007, the UK Auto Trader reports.

It's just one of a fleet of supercars which have been owned by the 24-year-old, who mainly drives a Bentley Continental GT Speed these days. The Porsche can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 5.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 177 mph. It has only 16,000 miles on it and is priced at £69,995 or about $115,000. Ronaldo was recently snapped canoodling with Paris Hilton in Las Vegas celebrating his new contract.

9ff and Switzer Take the Porsche 911 GT2 to the Extreme

When we reported last month on the Wimmer RS 911 GT2, we surmised that just about everything else would be left in its wake. We were mistaken. Because while most cars – Porsche's own top-of-the-line GT2 included – may have trouble keeping up, here are a pair of bad boys that clearly won't. Because while the Wimmer GT2 packs an impressive 680 horsepower, each of these custom GT2s produces more than 800.

American tuning house Switzer has replaced the stock Porsche turbochargers with even larger ones, recalibrated the engine management and fitted a custom exhaust system to produce a certified 800 horsepower running on standard 93-octane gasoline. Pump in a higher-rated fuel and there's no telling what the Switzer GT2 will be capable of. But if you're looking for something even more extreme, 9ff has got you covered. The German tuning firm has emerged as the be-all and end-all of Porsche tuners, and is backing up its reputation with what it calls the BT2. Based on the same flagship supercar, 9ff has extracted a mind-boggling 850 horsepower to drive its super-sled up to 240 miles per hour, passing 60 in just three seconds. They've topped theirs off with carbon fiber body panels to reduce weight and an aerodynamics kit to keep it planted on the road, and painted this demo model in classic blue-and-orange Gulf livery. Nice work if you can get it.

Wimmer RS GT2: For When an "Ordinary" Porsche 911 GT2 Isn't Fast Enough

Some people don't know when to leave well enough alone. We like those people. Like the engineers over at German tuning firm Wimmer Racing Technology, who have taken Porsche's top-of-the-line 911 GT2 and taken it to an even further extreme.

By tinkering with the electronics and replacing the twin turbochargers, camshafts, cylinder heads and exhaust system, Wimmer has brought the overall output up to a stratospheric 680 horsepower and 642 lb-ft of torque. With all that power in the back, the Wimmer RS GT2 can accelerate to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 221 miles per hour...plenty of grunt, in other words, to keep almost everything on the Autobahn in its rear-view mirror. Along with the carbon-fiber body kit, re-tuned suspension and 21" wheels, the modifications add an extra $40,000 to the "stock" GT2's $191,700 list price, for an on-the-street cost of over $230k. Bragging rights included.

Panamera Delayed, Porsche Unveils Updated 911 GT3 in Geneva

At this year's Geneva Motor Show, Porsche was originally scheduled to unveil its highly anticipated new Panamera four-door model, bridging the gap between its sportscar line-up and the Cayenne sport-utility vehicle. The German automaker, which recently acquired majority stake in the entire Volkswagen Group and all its many subsidiaries, opted instead to delay the Panamera's launch. Purists were undoubtedly pleased to see Porsche instead use the occasion to unveil its latest performance-focused driving tool, the revised 911 GT3. Slotting in below the Turbo and GT2 models in the 911 range, the new GT3 features a 3.8-liter flat-six that generates 435 horsepower without the need for turbochargers...good enough to propel the lightweight sportscar to sixty miles per hour in only 4.1 seconds. Center-locking wheels, a big rear wing and vents aplenty set the GT3 apart visually from the more ordinary versions of the 911, as you can see from the photographs in the gallery below.

New Porsche 911 Release Details

After making it's debut a few months ago, the new Porsche 911 Turbo drew a crowd at the New York Auto show this week and Michael Bartsch, the vice president of Porsche Cars North America gave out some release dates. The Porsche will be available for purchase starting in June with a sticker price of more than $122,000. Shortly afterward, in August, a street-legal version of the Porsche racer the 911 GT3 is to be released in the United States at $106,795. The company plans to sell about 800 units during their first year.
