Polo Ralph Lauren: The Icon that Became a Fragrance

Polo Ralph Lauren
The iconic pony that serves as Polo Ralph Lauren's logo is one of the most recognizable images in the world of luxury goods. No surprise, then, that Polo Ralph Lauren is a Luxist nominee for best fragrance.

Ralph Lauren started his luxury goods company in 1967, first focusing on men's ties before starting a women's line in 1971 and a smattering of standalone stores throughout the early 1970s. In 1978, Ralph Lauren launched the men's fragrance Polo, along with a women's counterpart called Lauren. Chaps and Tuxedo followed in 1979.

Polo by Ralph Lauren and the company's other fragrances are just part of a sprawling line of lifestyle goods spanning clothing, accessories, housewares, and even a few forays into the world of multimedia-including RL Magazine, a luxury living publication, and RL TV, an online trove of celebrity interviews, fashion show videos, and visual exposés of the good life.

Produced under license by L'Oreal, Ralph Lauren's portfolio of fragrances has grown in recent years to include an array of new scents, including Double Black for men (2.5 oz: $52.50) and Notorious for women (2.5 oz: $75). Polo Explorer (2.5 oz: $49.50) even comes in a chunky canister that looks more like a rugged water bottle than an eau de toilette. All are available at Ralph Lauren stores and online, and in many major department stores.

Vote for the fragrance that you believe is the best of breed. The voting period runs through May 31st and winners will be announced on June 1.

The Fashion Statement: All in the Family

oscar and moises de la renta

When it comes to fashion, families rule.

In Manhattan yesterday, Moises de la Renta, son of Oscar, debuted his very first collection, a limited edition T-shirt line called MDLR for a Spanish chain. Moises has been widely quoted for saying his designs meld his father's classic aesthetic with a younger, rock and roll edge. He said he went after traditional romantic themes: "from pretty patchworks with summer flowers in somber colors such as rose, violet, grey and black to graphic illusions which combine transparent effects, with shiny gems and adornments in between." For between $36 to $50, snag an MDLR T-shirt at Mango stores this month.

Famous fashion families seem to be popping up everywhere. Pasadena sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy have zoomed into the fashion stratosphere in a relatively very short time with their Rodarte brand. Actress Sienna Miller and her sis Savannah are having success with Twenty8Twelve. And, of course, there are the Olsen twins with The Row and Elizabeth & James. Mother Tina and Beyonce Knowles run the House of Dereon. And Nathalie Rykiel has been working alongside her mother Sonia for decades.

Just a few weeks ago, Madonna is betting a tween line she's designing with daughter Lourdes Ciccone (called-what else?-Material Girl) will ring the registers at Macy's.

Dress Like the Olympians in Polo Ralph Lauren

Polo Ralph Lauren's Olympian wearThe Olympics are back, and so is Polo Ralph Lauren with a line of clothing specially designed to outfit the American team in Vancouver. As with the Beijing Olympics collection in 2008 (which Jared Paul Stern wrote about here), the clothing is available to the public -- both the village wear which will be supplied to all the American athletes and the official Closing Ceremony Parade outfits. Don't they look strapping?

Polo Ralph Lauren's Olympics website includes a "Create Your Own" collection. You select your colors, add your name or the flag of your choice and make further customizations with embroidery and monogramming. It might not make anyone believe you're heading for the Olympics in less than two months, but at least you'll look good.

The Fashion Statement: Overalls are Back

I know. Call me insane, but I've been waiting for this day to come. Overalls have returned.

Ralph Lauren, in his infinite wisdom, has declared this über comfortable piece of clothing fashionable again as evidenced by his Spring show held earlier today.

"I am inspired by the character of the worker, the farmer, the cowboy, the pioneer women of the prairies living authentically through challenging times," he said in his program notes. "I have always admired the honesty of their work wear-the weathered jean, the sturdy overall, the jean jacket, the faded blue work shirt, the naive print of a floral dress."

With the sounds of trains, banjos and Bob Dylan blaring in the background, Lauren sent models out in ripped, stitched and patched RRL denim overalls. One he paired with a metallic pale blue lame blouse and a crystal-encrusted shoe more appropriate for the evening. Another, he topped with an indigo striped jacket. Finally, he created a carpenter pant out of faded blue ombre charmeuse.

The overall certainly fits the baggy, low-crotch pant silhouette of the moment. Genius. Do you agree?

Polo Ralph Lauren To Offer Shopping By Mobile Phone

Polo Ralph Lauren will soon be offering American shoppers the ability to shop for goods via mobile phone. The technology itself is only about a year away (something about integrating codes for download) but the company expects Americans to warm up to the idea only very slowly after that. Although foreign consumers like the Japanese have been using similar technology for years, Americans are thought to be a little less comfortable with cutting edge shopping methods.

Do you think that's really the problem? Couldn't it be that we just have too much fun shopping to reduce the whole experience down to a tiny cellphone screen?

Hm, maybe that's just me. If you're interested look for the service to appear soon on a cell phone screen near you.
