Cleaning a Flat-Screen TV

Unlike older TVs, with their glass fronts, flat screen models require more gentle care. In addition to regular dusting, you should periodically clean the screen to remove dirt and fingerprints, which will lessen your viewing experience.

Turn off the TV and disconnect the power. Make sure the screen is cool. This is more important with plasma TVs, as they throw a bit more heat than LCD TVs.

Dampen a lint-free cloth with clean water (do not use strong chemical cleaners such as alcohol, ammonia-based cleaners, or window cleaners) and wring it out until it is moist and will not drip. Chamois, microfiber, or 100 percent cotton are best. Do not use a napkin, paper towel, or tissue paper, as wood-source materials may scratch the screen. Gently wipe from the center of the screen in circles outward reaching the frame; be sure to clean the corners. Do not rub, scrub, or apply too much pressure. Wipe the case if desired. Use a dry, lint-free cloth to wipe away any moisture on the screen or the case, again using a circular motion on the screen.

You also can purchase special screenwipes, available at most computer stores. These can be used on your computer monitor too.

Samsung FP-T5894W: Wireless Plasma TV

At CES, Samsung had a display that featured their newest plasma TV. The Samsung FP-T5894W is a flat panel, wall-mounted TV that is completely wireless.

Up until this point, if you wanted to have the look of wireless, you would need to pay someone to install the TV and hide the wires in the wall behind the unit, which means that you ended up with an attractive look, but that you couldn't move the TV or even attach DVD players, etc. to it without attaching additional wires. The FP-T5894W has a wireless A/V center that can be placed up to 300 feet from the screen and will communicate at 150Mbps, the 802.11n wireless standard. The screen is 58-in. with 1080 px resolution and, according to Samsung, a 10,000:1 contrast ratio.

The retail release is scheduled for September 2007. List price is expected to be $5,799.

103" Plasma TV Update

Since our last post on the subject of the 103" plasma screen TV from Matsushita, the Japanese parent company of Panasonic, the company has released its pricing information. The price tag will be $51,000. The Viera PZ600 high-definition TVs will come in 50", 58" and 65" screens, in addition to the 103" size, and prices for those will start at $5,800. It also sounds like the screens will be available earlier than we previously forecasted, with a release date as early as this fall, instead of next year.

Pansasonic Swarovksi Frame Hits eBay

We mentioned Panasonic's crystal-studded frame for a plasma TV back in September, now one has shown up on eBay. Veronica over at Born Rich directs us to the auction for a 42" Panasonic EDTV with a Swarovksi crystal frame that has surfaced on eBay. The frame was introduced as part of the 2005 Emmy’s Ultimate Nominee TV Gift Bag by Madison & Mulholland. The frame is covered in over 3,000 crystals and the TV has been seen on TV in the Gastineau Girls. So far bidders, aren't too enthusiastic, last time we looked the auction was languishing under $1,000.
