Departures Offers Pirelli Calendar As An Incentive To Raise Money To Fight Malaria

As my colleague Jared Paul Stern mentioned earlier this month, the 2011 Pirelli calendar was photographed by Karl Lagerfeld. The calendar has a Graeco-Roman mythology theme and stars Juliane Moore Daria Werbowy, Lara Stone, Erin Wasson and others in a series of 36 black and white photos showing 24 different subjects, including gods, heroes and myths. The calendar is always hard to get a hold of and even more so this year. Departures magazine received a copy of the calendar and they are using it to get donations for the UN Foundation's Nothing But Nets.

Departures has partnered with Crowdrise, a fundraising platform created by actor Edward Norton, producer Shauna Robertson and Robert and Jeffrey Wolfe (founders of the quirky online retailer Moosejaw) to encourage people to make a minimum donation of $25 to the Nothing But Nets, a grassroots campaign to raise awareness and funding to combat malaria on http://www.crowdrise.com/pirelli. The donation serves as an entry to win the calendar. The The fundraising effort will run through January 15, with the lucky donor being selected at random on January 16.

Lagerfeld Launches 2011 Pirelli Calendar with Julianne Moore

Actress Juliane Moore and several naked supermodels, including serial nudist Daria Werbowy, Isabeli Fontana, Lara Stone, Erin Wasson, Natasha Poly and more appear in the just-unveiled 2011 Pirelli calendar photographed by Karl Lagerfeld. For the first time, thanks to Lagerfeld's influence and the Greek and Roman Mythology-theme of the shoot, which took place at Lagerfeld's studio in Paris, male models appear in the famed flesh fantasia as well this year. "It's my favourite religion: a god for everything," Lagerfeld tells Vogue UK regarding the calendar's theme. "I am a polytheist. I prefer mythology without hell, no sin – an obstacle to happiness – without forgiveness. I love goddesses because they were the first liberated women, who were entitled to everything. The goddesses and the muses are feminists!"

Meanwhile, Lagerfeld has been chosen to photograph the next Pirelli calendar, the annual naked supermodel fest. "I'll do it in my studio in Paris," the designer declared. "It's too obvious to have a beach setting."

Terry Richardson Shoots the 2010 Pirelli Calendar

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

For the past 40 years, Italian tire company Pirelli has issued a limited-edition calendar to a select list of VIPs - the kind who have fleets of Pirelli-shod Ferraris - featuring scores of nude supermodels. As we reported back in December, the 2009 Pirelli Calendar features an African theme and was shot in Botswana by famed photographer Peter Beard with models including the stunning Isabeli Fontana, Malgosia Bela, Daria Werbowy and Raquel Zimmermann (along with a fleet of agreeable elephants and not a lot of clothes).

The 2010 calendar was just shot by fashionably perverted lensman Terry Richardson in Brazil with a whole new crop of beauties, including stunning upper class British model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (above), who's said to be related to the Queen of England. Huntington-Whitely has sizzled before in campaigns for the likes of Agent Provocateur and Burberry. You can check out some video footage after the jump, but be forewarned - it's possibly NSFW and the running commentary is in Italian.

The Wild World of Harri Peccinotti

The name of London-born, photographer and graphic designer Harri Peccinotti may be unfamiliar, but his work has been hugely influential. One of the very first to shoot the legendary Pirelli Calendar, he "coined the idiom of gleaming bodies and strong, sleek sexuality", one that is copied by better known photographers and used to sell luxury products to this day. Born in 1938, Peccinotti served as art director of Flair, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Vogue and Nova.

Nova, one of the most influential magazines of the 1960s,introduced epoch-making changes in graphics, formats and photo editing. A brilliant new book dedicated to his work from Damiani (above) presents a broad selection of his photography published in fashion magazines, together with page proofs, book jackets and album covers created by Peccinotti over a period of about 40 years.

The 2009 Pirelli Calendar by Peter Beard

For the past 40 years, Italian tire company Pirelli has issued a limited-edition calendar to a select list of VIPs - the kind who have fleets of Pirelli-shod Ferraris. They always feature plenty of nude and semi-nude supermodels. The 2009 Pirelli Calendar has an African theme and was shot in Botswana by famed photographer Peter Beard with models including the stunning Isabeli Fontana, Malgosia Bela, Daria Werbowy and Raquel Zimmermann, along with a fleet of agreeable elephants and not a lot of clothes. Unless you're on the list, getting your hands on an actual calendar may be difficult, but check out the gallery for a preview.
