Life at the Pierre, Estate of the Day

Imagine life inside this high floor corner apartment in the tower of the legendary newly restored five star Pierre Hotel. By day, light fills the rooms as you gaze out on city and Central Park views. At night, the city sparkles below. Welcome your guests in to a foyer which leads to a gallery with elegantly sleek lacquer finish walls. The long corner living room offers views over the entire Park in two directions: north all the way up through the Park past the Metropolitan Museum to the George Washington Bridge and west across the Park to the Hudson River, seen through the shimmering Time Warner Towers and also encompassing all of Central Park South and Central Park West. In the living room walls of textured finish with aluminum leaf and patina are anchored with important moldings.

Restrained luxury takes over in the master bedroom which is upholstered in pale silk and has a large dressing closet and a flannel grey and white zebrino marble bath with an oversized glass stall shower. The second bedroom is currently in use as a library and has hidden pocket doors with floor to ceiling custom bookcases on either side, walls of pale cerused oak, a dressing area and a soft brown toned afromosia marble bath ensuite.

The home has a high-tech sound system and lighting which is activated by a one touch control system. Custom designed hardware, beautiful hardwood floors in all rooms and custom shutters which disappear into the window casements in both bedrooms are all part of the charm.

Your apartment also comes with a lifestyle. Apartment owners in the hotel have full access to all hotel services, 24 hour concierge service, twice daily maid service, once monthly heavy cleaning service, valet parking and 24 hour room service. The world famous Le Caprice restaurant from London is located in the hotel and there is also a fitness center and a hair salon. Pets are allowed and corporate ownership permitted. This home is listed at $12.5 million with Martha Kramer of Brown Harris Stevens.

The Best of London Comes to New York: Chef Michael Hartnell of Le Caprice

Chef Michael Hartnell of Le Caprice in New York.
Luxist had the opportunity to talk to rising star chef, Michael Hartnell, Executive Head Chef at Le Caprice, the fashionable Martin Brudnizki-designed restaurant in Manhattan's Pierre Hotel overlooking Central Park. The 28 year old wunderkind is known for his creative and modern European dishes.

Hartnell has worked for the Caprice Holdings Group for the past six years; prior to opening Le Caprice in New York, he was Head Chef at Daphne's in South Kensington, London.

Le Caprice, which opened in October 2009, is the American outpost of the famous London brasserie that shares the same name.

Luxist: Tell us about your background?

I was born in West London and grew up on the outskirts of London. My big opportunity came at the age of 15 when I did my work experience with my brother at The Ivy in London's West End. After finishing school, I completed my apprenticeship there and at other restaurants including Daphne's in South Kensington where I eventually became Head Chef at age 26 and Locande Locatelli, which is a One Star Michelin Italian Restaurant owned by Giorgio Locatelli.

Luxist: How does Le Caprice reflect your personality and vision as a chef?

Le Caprice embodies everything I love about food: its simple, well-produced and well executed. There is something on the menu for everyone's taste and that is a good reflection of myself. I'm not a complicated cook that likes to over elaborate on dishes, but what we do is done with a lot of passion. I aim to produce simple food using the best produce possible in sync with the seasons.

Luxist: Describe the menu offerings at Le Caprice in New York. What are the specialties? How often will the menu change? Describe your seasonal fare.

Chef Hartnell: We have Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Dinner and Bar menus. We have weekly changing specials and we also tweak the a la carte menu on a weekly basis to keep the menu as seasonal as possible. At the moment we are using fantastic fava beans, peas and artichokes. One of my favorite things right now is King Salmon, which we get from Washington State.

Le Caprice Celebrates Restaurant Week in New York

Le Caprice on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan is an art-deco designed restaurant.
For the first time, New York's Le Caprice, the fashionable Martin Brudnizki-designed restaurant in Manhattan's Pierre Hotel overlooking Central Park, will participate in Restaurant Week. Le Caprice will offer a special prix fixe menu featuring a three course lunch for $24 while the three course dinner menu is priced at $35 per person. Restaurant Week runs from Monday, July 12 through July 25th.

"Restaurant Week gives everyone the opportunity to visit the restaurant to experience our signature and New York specialties if they have not already done so," says Le Caprice's Executive Chef Michael Hartnell.

Le Caprice, which opened in October 2009, is the American outpost of the famous London brasserie that shares the same name.

Le Caprice's prix fixe lunch and dinner menus during Restaurant Week feature Signature Caprice dishes such as the mixed beets salad, wild salmon served with buttered runner beans and chanterelles and Chicken Milanese as well as New York Specialties such as the Caprice Burger. Dessert options include Le Caprice's delicious honeycomb ice cream served with hot chocolate sauce.

Signature cocktails at the Le Caprice Bar are not to be missed. Included on the menu are such signature drinks as Gabriel's Martini and the Ginger Caprice. Le Caprice is also featuring a few Summer cocktails on the menu which include a light and refreshing Raspberry Mojito and the Amalfi Martini, which is made with fresh lemon puree.

The restaurant's wine list features a broad selection of wines from around the world. It includes select European wines from small producers whose focus is quality rather than quantity and who release small parcels to the U.S. The restaurant also features smaller boutique producers from the US who likewise focus on the craft of their wine making rather than the status of their labels.

Le Caprice is located at 795 Fifth Avenue. It is open for lunch from 12 pm to 3 pm Monday through Friday; dinner is served from 5:30 pm to 11:30 pm. On weekends, brunch is served from 11:30 am to 4 pm.

RSVIP: Jewelry Scion Evan Yurman Shines at Glittering Sloan-Kettering Gala

America may find the vacuous catfights between Bravo's "The Real Housewives of New York City" entertaining, but meanwhile, the true socials of New York quietly continue fund-raising for worthy causes such as The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. On May 18, in the ballroom at the Pierre Hotel, they did so with great style, brightened by considerable gems.In fact, the hosts of this third annual gala, designer Tory Burch and her close pal Jamie Tisch, proved so popular that the event sold out before invitations were posted in the mail. Wearing chunky, rosy-red Rubellite chandelier earrings, sunny blonde co-chair Shelley Carr spoke of Yurman's support. "He started as a sculptor, and now his son Evan just helped to open a fabulous townhouse store on Madison," she offered. "I told them I was wearing blue, so they wanted to go with pink Rubellite earrings and ring and bracelets from Yurman's new lattice series."

Evan Yurman, who loaned the statement jewelry, acted like a star magnet in the ballroom. "I studied Italian Renaissance literature and photography," said Yurman's strapping son, also trained as a blacksmith, filling in for Dad that night. The artisan with reddish facial scruff, a skinny straight black tie, and unruly natural curls, told Luxist, "I love analyzing the historic apparel of decadent eras, the wants of jewelry patrons. Rubellite can come from the U.S., Nigeria, and Afghanistan, depending on the different colors of pink that you're looking for . . . [designing with them] can be like painting."

According to young Yurman, co-chair Heather Leeds had on "Prasiolite drop earrings. . . part of our couture collection." Leeds kept her hair up that night to reveal the luminous stones. "I was trying to pick jewelry created with our spring ball colors, either green or purple," she said. "And there were so many beautiful choices."

Mary J. Blige, who performed at the event, wore her golden hair freshly snipped into a honey-striped bob. According to Evan, Blige had on a Yurman's signature Albion ring that matched her hair. "She owns that one," he said of the ring. "She's one of our greatest clients."

"I have a lot of David Yurman chains and rings that I bought at Neiman Marcus," added Blige. And she enjoys mixing in the work of other jewelers; she also had on large cuff with a flower created in sparkling stones, by her friend Lorraine Schwartz.

Gadhafi May Bunk At The Pierre

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has been planning a trip to New York City for a while. He had originally planned to pitch a luxurious tent on an estate in New Jersey but now it looks like he may have a new address. Various sources are reporting that he may end up at New York's luxurious Pierre hotel. Suites have been reserved at various NYC hotels including the Hilton and the Plaza by Gadhafi and his entourage for the UN General Assembly which starts on Tuesday. Gadhafi is expected to arrive the following week. Negative sentiment toward Gadhafi is particularly high lately following the release of Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the only man arrested in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 so security will no doubt be tight. The Taj Pierre Grand suites can accommodate up to six connecting bedrooms under just one key and have landscaped terraces suitable for large-scale entertaining. Another controversial figure, Iran's leader, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, will be staying at the Barclay New York hotel on East 48th Street.
