Antique English Picnic & Games Chest for $34,500

A stunning expanding English mahogany picnic chest and games table is being offered for sale by M.S. Rau Antiques of New Orleans for $34,500. The exquisite piece, made circa 1920, resembles a simple wooden trunk at first glance; with its four legs unfolded however, the top and sides open out to reveal a complete luncheon service for eight, including Sheffield silverplate utensils, bone-handled cutlery, plates and saucers, cups and glasses, kettles and burners for hot water and soup, single and stacked enamel containers, wicker-wrapped glass bottles, ceramic butter pots, silver plated tins, a corkscrew and matchbox.

When the meal is over, the table folds and unfolds again, transforming into a felt-topped card table, perfect for a game with the deck of playing cards which are also included in the fitted compartments. No doubt designed for a wealthy British army officer or aristocrat on safari who wished to sacrifice none of the comforts of home, the impressive example of British Colonial campaign furniture would have been custom crafted to the owner's specifications and transported about by a retinue of servants – the brass fittings highly polished, of course.

Vintage 1905 Rolls-Royce Picnic Case for $14,800

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Last summer my colleague Noah Joseph wrote about the bespoke Rolls-Royce picnic set designed for the new Phantom, which harks back to the golden age of motoring. Now an original version – designed for a Rolls-Royce owner back in 1905 – is being offered for sale. The perfectly preserved case was made to double as a footrest in the passenger compartment. It contains a picnic service for four, ingeniously designed to accommodate sandwiches, tea, coffee and cocktails. Tucked into the lid are two leather-wrapped stainless steel thermoses, four dishes with recesses for teacups, a matchbox, and utensils including forks, mustard and butter spoons and bone-handled knives from Joseph Fenton & Sons of Sheffield. The case's bottom holds two glass bottles wrapped in wicker for water or wine, two flasks with fitted metal cups, an enameled container, a kettle and burner, four teacups, four smaller glass bottles, ceramic mustard and butter pots, salt and pepper jars and a small tin. M.S. Rau antiques of New Orleans is offering the piece of classic automotive history for sale at $14,800.

Anya Hindmarch Junie Canvas Bow Tote, Handbag of the Day

Anya Hindmarch Junie Canvas Bow ToteThe Anya Hindmarch Junie Canvas Bow Tote is adorable. Just look at it.

This friendly design is so smart and sweet, it calls forth images of Mary Tyler Moore skipping around her Minneapolis apartment, wondering if Rhoda's coming for a visit. We love the way the smattering of eyelets feminizes this durable canvas, we love the cute, almost nautical rope handle, and the signature bow basically seals the deal. This is one great tote bag.

The bag is 18"W X 12"H X 7½"D and features a practical brown cotton interior with pockets and a pen slot. You could use this for shopping or as a mom bag, or even for an overnight if you pack carefully. Personally, I'd use it for a picnic basket. I'd even buy a blanket to match.

The Anya Hindmarch Junie Canvas Bow Tote is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $495.00.

Rolls-Royce Custom Luggage & Picnic Set For $30,000 - In The Flesh

Filed under: Handbags, Luxury Cars & Autos

We covered the custom Rolls-Royce picnic set previously here as part of Rolls-Royce's new Bespoke Program. The Bespoke Program allows Rolls-Royce customers further access to customization features on the cars, as well as a series of accessories. I met with Rolls-Royce at car festivities for 2010 at Pebble Beach for some hands-on with the new picnic and luggage set along with some addition information. My first question was "who is making this stuff for Rolls?" According to the spokesperson - no one is. Roll Royce is making it all themselves at their special wood and leather shop. I thought that was pretty cool. Would have been pretty easy to go to a custom maker of such stuff and ask them to put the Rolls Royce name on it.

The luggage set is beautiful. Retro in design (what, no shoulder strap?), it features very soft leather and serious looking zippers! No plastic here, "luxury hate plastic!" The picnic set is too nice to actually use. Unless you travel with a caravan that will delicately clean it for you after each use. All the silverware is polished like a brand new wedding ring, while the glasses are crystal. If only I ate this well at home! The picnic case looks as though it weighs a ton, but owners will likely have spare people form their palanquin carrying team to move it to their picnic spot. Or maybe you can say "tailgate Rolls Royce style!"

Together, the set is said to cost about $30,000, of course with varying prices as this is the "Bespoke Program." Makes a great addition to your new Drophead Coupe.

The Basics of Planning a Picnic

It's still a little early to be planning a picnic here in the Midwest but thinking about what I want to do once the snow clears helps me deal with cabin fever, plus the eventual picnic (when it does happen) will be all the better for the advanced notice. It's been years since I've been on a full-fledged picnic -- basket, blanket and all -- so I thought it wise to do a little research and compiled this list for making sure everything goes perfectly.

Location
Half the fun of a picnic is derived from relaxing and throwing down a blanket to eat somewhere unusual and different. Consider the person or group you'll be picnicking with and choose somewhere they'll enjoy, whether it's a park for the kids to play in or a scenic vista as a setting for romance. Check out this website for help finding a recommended location near you.

Nuance Tablecloth Clips

Few things say 'summer' more than a picnic outside with goodies like fresh watermelon and grilled sweet corn, but few things can ruin that fun faster than a gust of wind blowing the tablecloth up, over, and off -- taking with it any unfortunately placed beverages and paper plates. But you can avoid that whole nasty scenario with these very simple but really pretty looking tablecloth clips from Nuance. Made of stainless steel they'll fit right in with all kinds of decor and tablecloth patterns, and keep your fun summer meal from turning into a disaster story. Set of 4 clips for $98.

Dean & Deluca Lobster Rolls Only A Day Away

This summer, Dean & Deluca is sending its customers Maine-caught lobster in one of two rolls: light mayo, lemon and celery or mayo and tarragon. This lobster is prime to eat right now, weeks before shedder season when lobsters molt, meaning soft shells and wimpy meat. As far as fresh lobster goes, it's reasonably priced at $135 for eight rolls (plus $35 for mandatory next day shipping). If no decadent picnics are in your future, at least get on the Dean & Deluca mailing list. Because a full-page spread of plump lobster is kind of like foodie Playboy.

Poacher Picnic Bag Set by Dunhill

Think "luxury picnic set" and what kinds of things come to mind? A buffed buffalo leather picnic bag? Sure. Napkins, plates, and cutlery? Of course. A game of Twister complete with big inflatable dice? Why not!

It's the Poacher Picnic Bag Set by Dunhill and it totally comes with all those things, although the Twister game is what makes this set so unique and fun (literally!). The great part, though, is that when you're not in the mood (or seriously trying to be comfortable and eat) the game is printed on a wool blanket that can be reversed for a much more classic picnic vibe. $1385
