Ten Champagne and Cigar Pairings for the Holiday Season

Nothing compares to the perfect pairing of champagne and a cigar. Too often, cigars wind up with dark liquors, their natural partners. Rum, port, scotch and cognac are the norm for an after-dinner smoke -- not champagne. With the holiday season coming, of course, the preferred beverage will likely bubble, so finding the right cigars for the top libation will be crucial.

Fortunately, Vin Lee, CEO of the Beverly Hills Cigar Club, has agreed to help us out. As you prepare for the new year, take a look at the cigar and champagne pairings that he recommends, with both ubiquitous and rare products on the list. Lee says, "In this day and age, not everyone can afford a $50 cigar and a $300 bottle of champagne," said Lee. "Complementing a wonderful glass of champagne with a great cigar for the holidays is something everyone should be able to enjoy."

Popping the Cork On The World's Oldest Champagne

perrier jouet 1825Last weekend some lucky wine and champagne experts got to taste the world's oldest champagne, Perrier-Jouet Vintage 1825, at Champagne House Perrier-Jouet. According to the Head of the International Wine Department at Sotheby's, Serena Sutcliffe MW each sip could have been worth thousands of dollars depending on what the wine would have yielded at auction. The private event celebrated the release of the House's inaugural vintage of the 21st Century, Perrier-Jouet Millesime 2002. Guests included champagne expert: Richard Juhlin from Sweden; France's most famous wine critic: Michel Bettane; Roger Voss from the The Wine Enthusiast; together with wine experts from the UK, China, Japan, Italy and Finland. The event included a total of 20 historic vintages including 1846, 1858, 1911, 1964 and 1995.

Decanter reports that there are now just two bottles left of Perrier Jouët's Sillery 1825. The tasters applauded when the cork was pulled and found that the wine was oxidized and had lots its sparkle. With just the lonely pair of bottles remaining to hold on to the Guinness Book of Records certification as the oldest champagne it seems highly unlikely that either one will be opened anytime soon.

Pernod Ricard's Pricey New Drink Offerings

Forget the Cristal, the Dom Perignon or the newly minted by hip hop Armand de Brignac, there is a new ultra-pricey bottle on the horizon. The BBC reports that Pernod Ricard will launch the world's most expensive bottle of champagne. The new champagne will be part of the Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque line (which generally hovers around $100 per bottle) and will sell for 1,000 euros (around $1,275) per bottle. Pernod chairman Patrick Ricard also announced a new brandy which will sell for close to $250.
