"Every square foot is about quality," says Paul Tchen, General Manager of the Peninsula Shanghai and he couldn't be more on target. Opened last March, this Art Deco marvel, the first new building on the legendary Bund in more than 60 years, is poised to become the most glamorous hotel in Asia. Prepare to be impressed.

Felix: Indulge in a Cocktail for "The Most Magical Show on Earth"

Filed under: Dining, Luxury Travel & Hotels, Spirits

Felix at the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong is nominated for a best hotel bar award by Luxist
Felix
at The Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong offers both spectacular service and a stupendous view of Hong Kong, and has been nominated for a Readers' Choice Award for Best Hotel Bars.

Fortuitously situated with an outlook facing Victoria Peak and Hong Kong Harbor, Felix boasts front row seats for a "galaxy of lights" in the evening which they describe as "the most magical show on earth." As you can see from the photos, the views inside the bar aren't too shabby, either.

The grand opulence of The Peninsula Hotel is the perfect setting for this luxurious bar experience. Guests of the highest caliber from all over the world can enjoy the beauty of Hong Kong from the uber-contemporary 28th-floor haven over an elegant bowl of Sunchoke and Lobster Soup with Meyer Lemons and Capers, or a Prawn Cracker-crusted Garoupa with a Shrimp Pillow, Scallions and Champagne Butter.

Late night dishes include small yet extravagant fusion offerings like Smoked Beef Tenderloin with Carmelized Onions and Brie on Toast, Salty Five Spices Pork Ribs and Salmon Nachos, and desserts like Rose Champagne Terrine with Seasonal Berries and Peach Reduction and a menu item entited "Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate" (really, who needs a further explanation?).

You'll find cocktails of both the avant-garde and classic varieties at Felix, and no children under 12. An additional bonus: as no "plastic footwear" is permitted, you won't see a single pair of Crocs.

Vote for the hotel bar that you believe is the best of breed. The voting period runs through April 30 and winners will be announced on May 1.

The Peninsula Spa by Espa: Techniques with both Asian and European Traditions

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Spas

From the windows of the spa at Hong Kong's Peninsula Hotel, guests can enjoy sweeping harbor views, a sauna, a peppermint vapor steam room and other perks – all before their treatments even begin. Small wonder The Peninsula Spa by Espa is a nominee for a Luxist award in the best day spa category.

Founded in 1928, The Peninsula was Hong Kong's first modern-day luxury hotel. The British briefly lost the enclave to Japanese forces in 1941, with the commanding officer issuing an official surrender in a room on The Peninsula's third floor, before regaining Hong Kong at the war's end. The middle of the century saw The Peninsula become one of the world's premier luxury destinations; in 1994, the hotel added a 30-story tower behind the original structure to meet growing demand. Shortly thereafter, The Peninsula Spa by Espa was installed high in the new tower.

Developed by industry giant ESPA, the spa offers body treatments and skincare with techniques borrowed from European and Asian tradition. The establishment's 14 rooms are adorned with reclaimed wood, green bamboo and indoor waterfalls; most offer views of the shimmering skyline on the other side of Victoria Harbor.

Treatments include "De-Stress," a massage with frankincense oils and a skin-specific facial (120 minutes: $250), as well as "Time Together," a couples' aromatherapy massage complete with full-body exfoliations and a steam bath (120 minutes: $650). If that's not enough relaxation, have afternoon tea in the lobby or dinner at iconic onsite restaurant Felix, which was designed by Philippe Starck.

Cast your vote for your favorite spa until March 31st. Winners will be announced on April 1.

Chanel Set To Open In Shanghai

Chanel is opening a new boutique in Shanghai on November 25. Peter Marino is the architect for the new space and was inspired by the Paris apartment of Mademoiselle Chanel. It is a fitting city for the famous couture house to unveil a new store as Shanghai is known as "the Paris of the East".

According to the architect, the idea was to give this new boutique a residential feel by combining hand picked art, antiques and other objects with a refined store decor. The fashion house has also commissioned original artwork by french artist, Jean-Michel Othoniel, to be displayed. The art of shopping is to be a subtle experience at this unique salon where customers enter the apartment-like space, can sit on sofas and have individual items brought to them as opposed to jostling elbows with other shoppers while browsing the merchandise. It is to be a different, more elegant, experience for the customer. Peter Marino is quoted "The result is comfort, quiet elegance, timelessness. The chic of Chanel."

Karl Lagerfeld has also designed exclusive products only to be sold in the Shanghai location to celebrate the stores opening. These include a classic quilted flap handbag with an inside signature "Shanghai Karl Lagerfeld", sling-back heels with a metallic CC logo, various items of clothing including a tweed jacket and skirt with gold trim.

The boutique has an excellent location in the newly opened The Peninsula hotel. The latest addition to the luxury travel market the Art Deco styled hotel has a terrific location on the Bund, the waterfront promenade in Shanghai.

Luxury Hotels Feed Hungry Fliers

Filed under: Dining, Luxury Travel & Hotels, Wings

Fly commercial across the country and starvation may set in. While some airlines sell fairly decent food they often run out and airport food can be a hit-or-miss proposition at best.  Luxury hotels are now stepping in to fill the gap. The AP reports on a variety of food-to-go options. The Ritz-Carlton hotels now offer "Flight Bites," sandwiches and light fare that can be ordered off the room service menu, packed and ready to go. The Peninsula Beverly Hills sells platters like the ones shown here that come in cardboard boxes and guests at Hotel Plaza Athene in New York can order from their  "Goodies to Go" menu. It's a good strategy to build brand loyalty and inexpensive word-of-mouth when the hungry passenger next to you asks where you got the lovely meal you are tucking in.
