Paul Smith Debuts Exclusive Collection for Barneys

Brilliant British designer Sir Paul Smith (right) is teaming up with Barneys New York to launch an exclusive new limited edition menswear collection. Titled simply "Exclusive", the line of suiting, separates and shirting was designed with the urbane Barneys New York customer in mind and will only be available at Barneys flagships.

Manufactured in Italy using Italian and British cloths, Paul Smith Exclusive has a modern, tailored silhouette, "finished with the design twists and styling details that have become synonymous with the Paul Smith brand," such as colorful linings.

Suits feature subtle stripes and Prince of Wales checks on gray and navy grounds, while shirting is bright with striped and checked designs on white bases. Velvet evening jackets and weekend sport coats complete the exclusive and extremely natty collection. Smith also just opened a new store in San Francisco.

Paul Smith Fisheye Camera

Paul Smith, British fashion designer and master of the signature stripe, has a new fisheye camera out for the holidays that will make for stylish, if not necessarily flattering photo sessions (fisheye cameras exaggerate with a wide-angle lens, meaning amusingly distorted faces).

The camera was produced as a limited edition series and retails for $150.

Dolce & Gabbana Tailors Italian Nat'l Soccer Team

Filed under: Apparel, Sports, Men's Style

To celebrate the 2008 European Cup soccer tournament, dashing designers Dolce & Gabbana have created a stylish new wardrobe for the Italian National Football Team ("Nazionale"). Italy debuted today in the fiercely-competitive 16-nation tournament at the Stade de Suisse in Berne, Switzerland. Dolce & Gabbana custom-tailored natty narrow-lapeled one-button dark blue suits with the Nazionale badge embroidered on the breast pocket, classic white shirts and solid narrow blue silk ties for the team. Filling out their off-pitch wardrobe are blue single-breasted peak-lapel blazers, matching four-button vests, blue cotton and wool hooded track suit tops, blue cotton track suit bottoms with satin belts and sides, and black nylon padded parkas with multiple pockets and detachable hoods. The collaboration is the latest in a line of recent designer makeovers for famed European football (soccer) teams, including Giorgio Armani for the Chelsea F.C. and Paul Smith for Manchester United. The Classicist: 10 Yrs. of Paul Smith at Westbourne House

Filed under: Apparel, Men's Style, The Classicist

Brilliant British designer Sir Paul Smith recently celebrated an important milestone in his colorful career: the 10th anniversary of his incredible flagship store in London's Notting Hill, Westbourne House. The perfect realization of a long term dream of Sir Paul's, the shop is designed to feel like someone's tastefully, quirkily lavish London home, and features a unique range of men's and women's clothes and accessories, housewares and knickknacks alongside a cllection of jewellery, books, art and antiques.

The architecturally-significant establishment is also the center of his exclusive bespoke tailoring operation. Smith says he still gets a thrill every time he walks in the door. To commemorate the anniversary, Smith and friends like shoe maestro Manolo Blahnik have created of limited edition products, available exclusively at Westbourne House, including watercolors, hand-painted plates, jewelry and a retro radio.

Smith, whose known for his signature multicolored stripes, opened his first clothing shop in 1970 and showed his first menswear collection under the Paul Smith label in 1976. Today Westbourne House is one of 14 Paul Smith shops in England; there are also outlets in Paris, Milan, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, the Philippines, Korea, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and others, as well as dozens in Japan, where Sir Paul is something of a cult figure. Today he has 12 different collections including Paul Smith, Paul Smith Women, Paul Smith Jeans, Paul Smith London, Paul Smith Bespoke, Paul Smith Shoes, Paul Smith Fragrance and Paul Smith Spectacles. The company's annual revenue as of 2006 exceeded $600 million.

Paul Smith Violet, Handbag of the Day

Designer Paul Smith aims to combine his very Englishness with a bit of the unexpected. In this bag, he gives a rather traditional shape a jolt with color and pattern that just barely misses being psychedelic. It's the subtler hues that give this bag a calmer feel and I think the look is charming. The swirl pattern is printed on a soft Italian leather, accented with brushed gold-tone hardware. It has a large zip top closure under two buckle straps with magnetic closures. Inside, the bag is lined in cream colored canvas and has a cell phone pocket as well as an additional side pocket. It's a proper bag with flair. £475.00.

Paul Smith Valentine Hankie

It's easy to get caught up in chocolates and wine for Valentine's Day and I'm sorry to say that we managed to overlook this adorable Paul Smith Valentine Hankie. The hankie, which is apparently a limited edition piece, as well as a seasonal one, is made of soft cotton and is printed with a red heart and the message "Paul Smith wishes you a Happy Valentines." Check out the rest of Paul Smith's Valentine's items before they're gone, as well. The heart-shaped necklaces and the red radio can certainly be used year-round. Price: $52 (£27).

Paul Smith Isobel Handbag, Handbag of the Day

Bright, sunny and perfect for spring, Paul Smith's golden yellow Isobel Bag is a great accessory from the designer's new handbag lineup. It is made of a soft grained leather that has been quilted in a pattern of swirling ripples. The bag has two rolled leather top handles that attach to the shaped frame of the bag. Inside, you'll find a pink canvas lining that provides a contrast similar to that of a pink grapefruit, given the bag's yellow exterior. It measures 44cm L x 13cm W x 24cm H. Price: £495.

Paul Smith Polka Dot Leather Clutch, Handbag of the Day

Here's one more handbag from the end-of-the-year sales. The Paul Smith Polka Dot Leather Clutch has a vintage look due to the combination of the white-on-black polka dots and the slightly old-fashioned gathers of the clutch at the border of the large frame. This is accentuated further with the small, contrasting brown leather buckle detail at the front. It is saved from looking too old by high quality leather and a magnetic snap closure hidden within the frame. It would look great with a nice, fitted pair of jeans. The clutch measures 10.5" x 5.5" x 1.5". Sale price: $379 (reg. $540).

Paul Smith Reindeer & Snowman Cuff Links

Looking for a way to subtly celebrate the season in a staid office environment? Paul Smith's Reindeer & Snowman Cuff Links are an adorable way to do just that, not to mention that they're the perfect accessories for any holiday party. The gunmetal gray links will catch the eye with splashes of bright red enamel (scarf and boots on the reindeer, scarf and hat on the snowman) and glittering green crystal eyes and buttons. Since they aren't directly tired to Christmas, but more to the winter season in general, these links can be used into the New Year before being put away until next December. Price: $150.

Paul Smith Story

I love the bottle for the Paul Smith scent, Paul Smith Story. Shaped like a book, the bottle can stand upright or lie down flat. The vial is made of thick glass that "allow[s] the green glow of old apothecary bottles to shine through," giving it not only a distinctive look, but a sturdy feel. The idea behind the name is that they layered scent builds as you are exposed to it, starting with notes of grapefruit and bergamot, before progressing to jasmine and other florals. It is both romantic and provocative, a scent suitable for wearing both during the day and when going out. Price: £24.

Paul Smith Swirl Rug

Need a little retro pop for your floor? Are those majestic hardwoods seeming a little bare? Why not get a rug? Outlandish British designer Paul Smith has lent his trademark bright stripes to The Rug Company to make high quality floor coverings. This swirling rug is of Tibetan wool and comes in several sizes. Take some time to browse through their other rugs as well. There are several that I am wanting for my floors.

Paul Smith World Cup Gear

We already saw designer soccer balls from Takashi Murakami and a whistle chair/sculpture for armchair referees, but Paul Smith has a whole line of products that he developed in celebration of the World Cup. First up is his take on a football, made of fake crocodile skin colored with bright hues. Unfortunately, unlike the Murakami balls, it is not intended to be used as more than a novelty and should not even be taken outdoors. This isn't a problem if you want to toss the ball around while watching the game on TV, though. The ball is £169.

Paul Smith iPod mini case

In honor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibit, Anglo-mania, a retrospective of British fashion, I thought I'd join in the Anglophilia with something hip and Brit: Paul Smith's leather iPod Mini carrying case.

If you're not familiar with Paul Smith, let me gush about him for a few minutes. He's best known for his tailored suits, but in the past few years, he extended his collection to include women's ready to wear, accessories and perfumes. What Paul Smith does best is basically what the British do best -- mixing subsersiveness with tradition. Smith's suits, are on the outside, exactly what you would expect a stuffy British business man to wear. On the inside, though, he includes details like lavender satin or this funky ticking stripe liner.

It's the same striped patten he uses in this iPod mini case. The sleek elastic sides enable this carrier to accomodate both the 4 and the 6 GB Mini.

Sort of mod, sort of cheeky, this pod holster gives me the feeling that I should be spending a good part of my life listening to The Kinks' song "Waterloo Station" on iPod repeat. Price: $130.

Paul Smith Mini Car Messenger Bag, Handbag of the Day

As though to prove that fun bags aren't just for women, Paul Smith has released this bright, funky men's Mini Car Messenger Bag. The bag is made of canvas with leather trim and features a photo screen print of a multi-striped Mini Cooper in front of a lively casino. Bright colors aren't limited to the exterior of the bag, either. The lining of the messenger is a rich purple cotton canvas. It has one slot and one zip pocket to organize all your things the next time you are making a trip out to Las Vegas or down to Atlantic City for the day. It measures a roomy 19 x 12 x 4.75-inches. Price: $400.

Paul Smith Triumph Bag

I wrote before about designer Paul Smith's partnership with Triumph to create motorcycles. Smith was also inspired to make several bags that celebrate vintage Triumph style. There is a messenger bag made to look like a distressed motorcycle jacket and this canvas weekend bag that features a Triumph on one side and a close-up of the engine on the other. The bag has leather trim and a vibrant purple lining. It's on sale at eLuxury for $329, down from $495.
