McQueen Knuckle Duster Patent Leather Clutch, Handbag of the Day

I've never considered a handbag could double as a self-defense mechanism, unless it had a brick inside or something equally heavy, but Alexander McQueen's Knuckle Duster Patent Leather Clutch would certainly bring more than a slap to an unwelcome visitor's body. Accenting the top ridge of this richly covered bag are skull and crystal rings in dark colors adding a subtle bit of glamour. The bag does feature more than protective embellishments such as a clasp closure, metal frame and leather lining.

Have you ever put your thumb through a ring connecting your handbag's handle to the body of the bag for protection from muggers along a busy street? Well just slip your fingers through these rings atop your clutch and I'd bet you'd deter any interested parties from attempting to swipe your clutch now. Enough violent fun for one day...

Allover vertical stitching gives this otherwise plain patent leather bag some texture. Plain is good - I like the simplicity of the flap closure and I love the wide base. With gold-tone rings and closure, the bag is accented with a simple logo medallion and nothing else. A single rolled leather strap with an 8½" drop finishes off the look and the interior sports three pockets. Measuring 10½"L x 4½"W x 8"H, the bag sells for $298.

What does this bag remind you of? It may look like shiny green bubble wrap, but it is actually quilted black patent leather. I like the size and shape, but I just can't get past the bubbly pattern. Maybe it's just a bad photo. The front zipper detail looks good, but is it just for looks are can you actually store things in there? It has a zip top closure and rather chunky gold-tone hardware, including over-sized protective feet. Lined in black twill, the bag measures 12½ high by 16" wide by 5" deep and has 7½" strap drop. $395.

This little bag oozes sophistication. Gorgeous patent leather is subtly crinkled and accented with tonal top-stitching on the seams and handles. With just the bare minimum of gold-tone hardware, this frame top satchel might be simply styled, but it really packs a punch in gorgeous cherry red. It's also available in jet black, but that one just doesn't have the wow factor that this one does. $347.

This bag is available in several colors, but who could resist glowing purple? From Mulberry's Autumn/Winter 2007 collection, the shiny patent leather Mabel bag is a beautiful way to put some color in your day. With gold tone hardware and tasseled zip pulls, it looks smart and funky at the same time. It has a clean, compact look about it and I love the extra wide handles and matching luggage tag. Measuring 13.5" W x 8.5" H x 6.5" D, it has a 7" handle drop and a top zip closure. £695.

Shiny black patent leather is accented with slick silver details and wrapped up beautifully with a wide buckled belt. And those handles with their super-sized hinged hardware really stand out. More silver-tone hardware adorns each side of the bag in the form of logo-engraved plates. The top zips both ways with patent leather pulls and the interior is softened up with a purple floral print. $2792.

For some reason, purple doesn't get a lot of play in handbags. Zac Posen calls it amethyst, but to me it's grape and looks delicious. A structured bag with shiny patent leather on the front and pebbled leather on the back, the gorgeous color is accented with gold-tone hardware. A removable chunky chain strap holds a logo tab, which tucks into a small, off-center open pocket on the front. There's another large flap pocket on the exterior and the suede-lined interior features an additional zip pocket. Measuring 15½" W x 10½"H x 4½" D, the bag is also available in a less-luscious black. $1,200.

Lulu Guinness 50's Furniture Shop Carmen, Handbag of the Day

Lulu Guinness remains one of my favorite handbag designers. Her bags are instantly recognizable for their unique and whimsical design. This one, from the Autumn/Winter 2007 collection, depicts a 1950's furniture shop scene embroidered upon black patent leather. I love the details - especially the star-burst clock hanging on the wall of the shop and the L.G. monogram on the door. I also like the shape - a large box with a full sized zip closure. It is a cute bag with a retro vibe. £195.00.
