John Mayer Lists Pacific Palisades Home

Musician John Mayer may be facing a bit of real estate pain. He bought a four-bedroom home in Pacific Palisades, California back in 2006 for $1.75 million and yet he has listed it for $1.325 million setting himself up for a substantial loss. The two story home is on a quiet cul-de-sac in lower Palisades Highlands. There are four bedrooms but only 2.75 bathrooms and so the listing says that the fourth bedroom could be pressed into service as a media room, home office or room for a nanny.

The contemporary home was built in 1974 and has sharp angular spaces includes a large atrium entry. The living room has high ceilings and walls of glass. The Real Estalker mentioned that the home has a nightclub-like feel, a vision enhanced by the presence of a disco ball. The master suite includes a bedroom, large custom-fitted walk-in closet, dressing area with a built-in dressing table, and a bathroom with a soaking tub and separate glass enclosed shower. There's not much to the yard, just a narrow back yard, a fire pit and several patios.

Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic Comes to Los Angeles

Famed French champagne house Veuve Clicquot will re-introduce professional polo to Los Angeles when it hosts the inaugural Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic Los Angeles on October 10 at the Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades. Nacho Figueras, captain of the Black Watch team and Ralph Lauren model, will go head-to-head against some of the world's best polo players for the inaugural event. In homage to the golden era of polo in Hollywood in the 1920s and 1930s, guests are being encouraged to wear fashions inspired by that era, with help from Cameron Silver, super-stylish owner of Los Angeles and London-based vintage couture boutiques decadestwo and DECADES. Silver will offer on-site styling advice and sessions with guests and is consulting on the overall design of the event and its vintage inspiration.

In addition to the exclusive VIP Marquee, one side of the field will be free and open to the public. Angelenos will be able to watch the match from bleachers overlooking the legendary polo grounds – the last of Los Angeles' original 22 polo fields – where Hollywood celebrity and polo connoisseur Will Rogers used to play the sport himself along with fellow polo enthusiasts including Clark Gable, Walt Disney, and Spencer Tracy. The site is located just outside Rogers' former estate, which still stands today. Spectators can also expect plenty of Veuve Clicquot champagne bars and premium snacks, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Will Rogers Ranch Foundation and California State Parks.

Tracey Ullman in Pacific Palisades, Estate of the Day

The always hilarious Tracey Ullman and her husband Allan McKeown might be downsizing. The pair have listed their classic 1920s Mediterranean home in the Pacific Palisades area of Southern California. The Real Estalker reveals that they bought the home for a pricey $1.8 million way back in 1988. The home has five bedrooms and is located in the Riviera section of Pacific Palisades which is home to the Riviera Country Club, a very nice part of town to be in.

The home opens with a grand foyer and a small rotunda but the large arched window is unfortunately blocked by the huge split staircase. The large white eat-in kitchen includes a center island with chairs. The bedrooms are relatively small but charming and the master bedroom has many windows and lots of wide open space. Like the Real Estalker Mama, I'm charmed by the vintage bathroom tiles in the bathrooms. Outside there is a swimming pool with a guesthouse and and indoor spa room with a lounger and window-surrounded spa. The property is walled and gated for added security. This home is listed at $5.35 million. See more at the property website.

Brad Grey in Pacific Palisades, Estate of the Day

The Real Estalker mentioned that mega producer Brad Grey had bought a place in Bel-Air in April for $22 million. Now his Pacific Palisades home has hit the market. Grey and his wife Jill are divorcing. Their shingled home sits on two acres of grounds that include a large duck pond, pool and tennis court. The home itself was built by Grey in the late 1990s and has over 13,000 square feet of space. It's an Arts and Crafts inspired home molded to the Southern California lifestyle with large windows and an open floorplan. The home includes a formal living room and dining room as well as a more casual family room for lounging around. One curious feature is the den which has two large stainless steel refrigerator-like units which may be humidors. A large paneled office makes an excellent place for doing business at home. The lower level is built for recreation with a huge wine cellar, 35mm projection theater and a gym. The huge master suite includes a sitting room, terrace, wet bar, and dual walk in closets and dual bathrooms. The home has been staged which explains the blandly perfect decor. Like the Real Estalker, I tend to think the $29.99 million listing price is more than a bit steep even with the ample land. The water bill alone for all those lawns will certainly require a large bank account.

Harris in the Palisades, Estate of the Day

Last week our Sunday estate was the home of a former "ER" actress, this week we've got another TV actress, Mel Harris, most famous for her role as the winsome and whiny Hope on the show "thirtysomething." The LA Times Hot Property column reports that Harris has listed her Pacific Palisades property, a charming four-bedroom Country English-style home. She has owned the home for five years and it has been remodeled with a new marble-countered kitchen and bathrooms. There are older details to love such as the Batchelder tile fireplace in the living room and the beautiful beams and archways. The new master bathroom is a bit too over the top for a house of this scale and graciousness and the travertine tile in the kitchen seems like it would be a better fit for a Florida flip than for this older Californian. The home was originally listed at $4.347 million but is already down to $4.197 million which still seems like a lot of cash for 4,5000 square feet even in the pricey Palisades.

Palisades Teardown, Estate of the Day

Today's home is a bit of old Hollywood tradition in Pacific Palisades, California. The home is now on Amalfi Drive but was built in 1924 with an address on Haldeman Road. At that time, the Uplifters Club owned Rustic Canyon where several members built homes. It is said that the home was designed by architect William Dodd, an Uplifters Club member who designed what is now the Rustic Canyon Recreation Center. The home was later bought by Hal Roach Studios, and became a Hollywood hangout for some of Hollywood's early big stars such as Harold Lloyd, Jean Harlow and Will Rogers. It was reputedly occupied by Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy during his divorces. The home is, as the listing admits, in need of a lot of work but it has, as they say, lovely bones. The property website says "restoration or wrecking ball?" Restoration, please! This home is listed at $5 million.

Monte Hermoso, Estate of the Day

When it comes to the world of Britney Spears, you just never know. The gossip game of did she or didn't she surrounds this girl on a multitude of levels. One of those levels is definitely real estate. It has been widely reported this week that Britney checked out today's estate in Pacific Palisades not once but twice. They even report she flushed all the toilets and took a swim in the pool during her visit to the pad. Now the Real Estalker says she hears it's not a go and I trust her judgment but I'm taking a look at this house anyway mainly because I just like to imagine what Britters might have thought as she went flouncing through here.

The home has five bedrooms and is located on a nice three-acre chunk of land which has been landscaped with waterfalls, koi ponds and fruit trees. Lovely stuff but perhaps a little tranquil sounding for a nightlife-loving young girl. Britney seems to like the Tuscan look as evidenced by her last real estate adventure in Beverly Hills. And it does have a celebrity pedigree. As Mr. Big Time reports, it was owned by Ray Liotta from 1995 to 2003 (he bought it for $2.25 million).

This home was built in the early 1990s and it's got a smidgen more character on the interior than other homes we have seen with this look. The current owners certainly have some interesting taste in art which must have captivated Brit and the entourage. And I am not quite sure what to make of the massive room with the huge bed, the foosball table and the pool table in it. The two marble master bathrooms seem to be a pop princess' dream (if a bit of an unsafe place to give the kiddies a bath). It is listed at $6.65 million.

Ocean Grove, Estate of the Day

This large compound in Pacific Palisades, California offers ocean and panoramic views. Ocean Grove was once a lemon orchard but is now an estate with a 15,300 sq. ft. home. The main house has a master wing with sitting room and two balconies, three additional bedrooms, a library, a veranda and dining rotunda with stately columns, two offices and an exercise studio. The guest house has three bedrooms and an elevator. There is garage space for five vehicles, a studio apartments, a swimming pool and a professional size batting cage. The website includes a quick tour of some of the interior and a panorama of the view from the home which is listed for $27 million.
