Kanon Organic Vodka from the King of Sweden's Distillery

New to these shores, Kanon Organic Vodka is a Swedish spirit from Gripsholm Distillery, founded by King Karl IX of Sweden, which has been producing organic vodka for over 400 years. Forsaking charcoal filtering and multiple distillation, the distillery uses local organic wheat and untouched spring water for a subtle, natural flavor without the usual vodka burn.

Gripsholm is the only EU and US certified organic distillery in Sweden. Once the king's cannon maker in the late 16th century (hence the vodka's name), Gripsholm started supplying vodka to the foundry workers and people in the surrounding area. With its 29 pot-still pans, 280 workers and a production of over a million liters of vodka annually, Gripsholm was once the largest distillery in Sweden.

Kanon is distilled from locally grown organic wheat in a continuous process without the use of environmentally harmful or genetically modified additives. The whole setup is eco-friendly; the distillery is run on wind and water power and all by-products are renewed. Even the attractive bottle is made from 60% recycled glass. Now available in New York at Morgan's hotels, Kanon will be launching in Los Angeles in January 2011.

TRU Organic Spirits Launches Artisanal Gin

Los Angeles-based TRU Organic Spirits has launched a new small batch, artisanal gin using 14 whole botanicals. The botanicals in TRU2 Gin (right) are macerated in layers forming an organic wheat base spirit.

The gin is not re-distilled after the maceration process in order to preserve its rich, balanced flavor profile, a technique that "harks back to the earliest curative gins made by 16th century physicians throughout Europe," the company notes.

We're used to gins these days being crystal clear, but the macerated ingredients including juniper berries, fresh lavender and chamomile impart a distinctive amber hue to this flavorful spirit.

TRU, which is known for its artisanal vodkas (our favorite is the lemon infused version), uses state-of-the art column stills that produce the purest spirits possible in only one pass in order to conserve energy. The company also plants a tree for every bottle sold.

Crop Harvest Earth Vodka

Recently we've waxed rhapsodic about vodka brands featuring tomato and cucumber flavors. Now one brand has both flavors and they are USDA certified organic too. Crop Harvest Earth Vodkas are made from organic grain harvested from soil free of artificial fertilizers, pesticides and chemicals. Rather than boast of a certain number of distillations, Crop Harvest Earth vodka says they distill each batch only as many times as necessary to remove impurities. The vodka sells for around $25.

Vodka 14

The latest in organic vodka comes from Colorado. Vodka 14 is Colorado's only all-organic Rocky Mountain vodka. Vodka is becoming more and more like a microbrew in that smaller companies are getting in on what used to be just a big business venture. Altitude Spirits is run by the father and son team of Mitch and Matthew Baris from Boulder, CO. Vodka 14 is made with all-organic grains and Rocky Mountain spring water and created in a four-column controlled distillation system. A bottle sells for about $30 retail and features a picture of Mount Wilson, one of 54 14,000-foot peaks in Colorado.
