Smock, Bamboo Letterpress Cards

In the green and gorgeous category are these letterpress cards from Smock. This printshop in upstate New York creates handcrafted products from bamboo paper. Bamboo is a sustainable and renewable resource which requires little water to grow. Smock has partnered with a 500-year-old European paper mill to develop their artisan paper. The bamboo for the paper is harvested in Thailand without use of pesticides or fertilizer and is supplied by local farmers and not harvested from areas where traditional or civil rights are violated, nor does it come from natural forests that have been converted to plantations.

The inks used are vegetable oil based or low VOC and their retail packaging is biodegradable, tree-free and petroleum-free. The store does custom orders for weddings and other social events and notes likes these thank you cards are $18 for eight cards with lined envelopes.

Seven Deadly Sins Stationery

China isn't the only thing portraying the seven deadly sins anymore. Mrs. John L Strong, one of the finest stationers in New York, if not the world, has a set of Seven Deadly Sins Notecards. The cards are topped with a single word, naming their sin. Each 100% cotton card is of archival quality, made with custom dyes - some dating back to the 19th century - and is paired with a hand-lined card. It goes without saying that all pieces pass a meticulous inspection before being passed on to the buyer. "Sloth" is a sin that has never appeared in Mrs Strong's other than on paper. Price: $50.

Letters Worth Loving

In the era of email, text messages and cell phones, there are few things that are as meaningful as a hand-written letter. If you are one of the few people out there who refuses to give up on snail mail, you're also probably one of those people with a penchant for cool stationery.

IShould you fall into this aforementioned category, you must visit R. Nichols Stationery to check out the newest selection of distinctive paper. Nichols is a well-known illustrator who provided the leggy, glamorous drawings for the recent best-seller, French Women Don't Get Fat. Nichols' hand-drawn cards and stationery are divided according to theme: babies, gardens, travel, New York, Paris, fashion, beauty. My favorite has to be the "Taxi in the Rain" card. For obvious reasons, this quirky card captures the romance and the drudgery of life in the Big Apple. A box of eight folded note cards with envelopes costs $14.
