Nina Ricci Floral Pumps

Nina Ricci's Mary Jane Pumps ($780) have a flirty but refined feel. Its 4 1/2" inch heel and platform sole exude instant sex appeal while a decorative flower along the vamp has the odd combination of being girlish yet elegant.

Featured in grey (which looks more like navy blue) and wine suede, the monochromatic design is the perfect backdrop to enhance the power of simple decorative touches like a fabric floral accent and subtleties like the burnt orange outline and black outline above the platform. Ricci's flowery Mary Jane's would be a perfect complement to your holiday party dress.

The Luxist Top Ten Handbags of 2010

Valentino Crystal-Embellished Feather Clutch
2010 may have been a tough year in a lot of ways, but it was a terrific year for handbags. From divinely sparkling clutches to totes in unheard-of textures, designers were inventive, creative and finally took some risks again -- a sure sign of an improving economy. We're celebrating the return to flamboyance and daring style with a list of our top ten favorites from this year's outstanding Luxist Handbag of the Day collection.

1.
Valentino Crystal-Embellished Feather Clutch

Let's begin with the ethereal, exquisite bag above, the Valentino Crystal-Embellished Feather Clutch. These little birdies outdid even the Judith Lieber Enchanted Stardust Clutch with their whimsical glamour, and the feathers are so elegantly and daintily assembled, the clutch eclipsed the ballerina charm of the Valentino Tulle Rosette Bag. We love the coloring; it's as if each perfect feather has been gingerly dipped in the blackest of ink. The pale pink satin structure and lining complete the dream-come-true wonder of this masterful handbag which commanded $4,170.00.

Nina Ricci Small Hobo, Handbag of the Day

Although a pale pink handbag seems fitting for the Summer, this cute little hobo by Nina Ricci makes me want to find a way to incorporate with my Fall wardrobe. The color is light and soft and so of course is the leather.

The Ricci Hobo ($1475) is sparingly adorned with just a knotted bow handle and monochromatic logo on the front zippered pocket, making it a bag that will last for years to come. Even with its small size, the hobo is perfect for your essentials. Dimensions: 8.5" X 16" X 5".

Nina Ricci Ondine Agneau Bag, Handbag of the Day

Nina Ricci Ondine Agneau BagThe Nina Ricci Ondine Agneau Bag is, by far, one of the prettiest bags of the season.

This beautiful purse calls forth images of extravagant architectural moldings and hand-carved details you only see in palaces like Hofburg or Versailles. While this handbag is clearly made with superior attention to craftsmanship and history, there is a certain effortless glamour about it; perhaps achieved by the pale pastel color palette.

This leather flap front bag features an elegant woven leather horseshoe and bright silvery chain strap, and comes only in this particularly exquisite shade of pale grey. At just 7" x 12" x 4", it's a delicate bag, but its sheer class and subtle detail render it unmistakably expensive.

This demure handbag is extremely versatile; easy to dress down, easy to pair with patterns or colors, and easy to carry to a black or white tie event. It's one of those if-you-only-buy-one-purse-this-year pieces that you'll use again and again.

The Nina Ricci Ondine Agneau Bag is available from Barneys for $2,300.

Nina Ricci N031 Ladies Watch

While I am not necessarily in love with the looks of this watch, I do like what went in to it. The new Nina Ricci N031 timepieces for ladies uses Milanese thin mesh metal which wraps around itself like a hard candy wrapper. A true combination between a bracelet and a watch, the N031 hugs the wrist as the "C" style bracelet can be adjusted for size. Thin mesh metal is quite hard to work with in many applications, so I truly like the creativity here. It is a piece that looks good with denim or a gown. The watch itself is 28mm wide and comes with a variety of dial choices as well as diamond decoration options. Inside the watch is a Swiss Ronda 751 quartz movement. Crystal is mineral, but with one of those sapphire coatings that make them a bit more scratch resistant. For the right outfit and women, this is an interesting piece.

Nina Ricci N030 Ladies Watch

Lots of time and effort goes into trying to make new and interesting watch cases and dial designs. The possibilities are next to endless - especially with women's watches. New from Nina Ricci is this N030 watch that uses two visual ellipses to create the watch dial and elongated lug structure. The watch itself is contained in a plump little case with the crown at its apex and a neatly made dial in a few styles including machine engraving style decoration in white, mother of pearl, chocolate, mauve, or standard white. Other options include dials with Roman numerals, baton markers, or "NINA," one letter for each of the points of the dial). I appreciate it when "artistic" watches such as this aren't too hard to read.

I am curious as to what a timepiece such as this looks like on someone's wrist. The unique shape could prove to be quite nice as it curves over a feminine hand. The case itself is in steel and polished, but is also available with a PVD coated rose gold finish. More options include case decoration of either 12 or 45 diamonds. With the strap there are still more options including at least six different versions available. The N030 is really going to be a diverse watch give all the options, owners of the watch might never meet someone else with the exact same combination watch. Inside is Swiss Ronda quartz movement. Crystal is mineral but with a special sapphire treatment over it to help protect against scratches. Now all they need is a good name to go with the watch collection.

Nina Ricci N029 Valentine's Day Watch

Swiss watch maker Nina Ricci presents an interesting timepiece for Valentine's Day 2010. This sporty yet attractive watch is a departure from the legions of formal jewelry wear often delivered for the "romantic" occasion. Combining the requisite "red" color of love for the occasion with stylized doves on the dial of the thin rectangular steel case (17mm x 37mm in size), and you have a timepiece that both fits the mood of the day yet offers something different. The strap is rubber and has three polished steel plates on both ends of the strap (which is closed via a butterfly clasp). Such plates create a more substantial feel to the watch, but preserve its sporty and comfortable demeanor. As a "love" watch, but the design does not scream "Valentine' Day." As such, it is a piece that can be worn on any occasion. That is not always easy to get away with when your watch dial is pink and shaped like a large heart.

While the red version of the N029 watch is the special version for Valentine's Day, the standard N029 watch collection has two Roman numerals on the dial and arrives in a variety of colors to suit one's tastes. Inside the watch is a Swiss Ronda 751 quartz movement.

Vintage Clothing Sales Surge in Bad Economy

Designer vintage clothiers have always boasted a discerning clientele -- it takes a certain skill to identify and hunt down the fashion highlights from seasons past. In the current economy, high-end vintage outlets like The Way We Wore and Decades tell the LA Times that business is hotter than ever.

As Jared Paul Stern reported earlier this fall, Christie's is about to auction some of the 20th Century's most amazing vintage finds, a collection amassed by the bicoastal favorite Resurrection, a pioneer of designer vintage during the last economic downturn.

Vintage prices are indeed wallet-friendlier. Consider the Oscar de la Renta gown at right. Original retail: $14,000. For sale via eBay for the buy-it-now price of $3,500.

Your feelings about Reaganomics aside, the vintage trend has had successful trickle down: sales are up at Goodwill and Salvation Army, too.

Hey There, Sailor

When horizontal stripes can back in style, it was hard to tell if they were going to stick around or have only a short shelf life. They stuck around for a season or so, but as designers moved from winter and spring onto summer, they needed to do something different with the pattern. They went nautical. After all, it's not a big jump from stripes to sailors, when you consider that the traditional sailors' outfits that are played up in films and histories consist largely of navy-and-white stripes.

You can see the look in the summer/fall Balenciaga collection, which had a sailor outfit showcased in Harper's Bazaar, and in the New York Times, which wrote up a piece highlighting the nautical tattoo-inspired designs at Sailor Jerry. For something in between those two style extremes, try an outfit like this Crossback Dress by Nina Ricci. It has the blue and white sailor stripes, but wraps them around the body on a thick ribbon, instead of using the pattern on the dress itself. The white dress is made of silk and is fully lined, with flattering, flowing pleats. Price: $3,290.
