Partners in Preservation is an alliance between American Express and The National Trust for Historic Preservation and is geared towards the preservation of historic sites all across the US. The initiative involves over $5 million in funds and is spread out over a 5 year period, with the first two years' efforts focusing on Chicago and San Francisco and this year New Orleans.

Nine sites in New Orleans have been nominated for the project and include everything from churches and cemeteries to the building known as "The Birthplace of Jazz." Want to learn more and get involved? Click here.

Brad Pitt's 'Make It Right' Foundation, Charity of the Day

Brad Pitt's Make It Right foundation is geared towards helping hurricane Katrina victims rebuild in New Orleans. Brad is putting a call out to all American families to be generous and giving this Christmas season by donating to the cause and helping New Orleans families as they fight "the fight of the their lives." The biggest focus of the efforts is rebuilding the homes that were lost, and doing it in a speedy and environmentally conscious way.

Donating to the cause is a great gift, either as a straight monetary amount given in a loved one's name or through giving them a t-shirt or hat to promote and support the cause.

New Orleans Mansion, Estate of the Day

I know, it's hurricane season once again but check out this beautiful New Orleans home. It was built around 1913 and designed by architect Emile Weil. The home is full of vintage details (the ornate windows alone are stunning). The home is located on a private and gated street off of St. Charles Ave. and has its own pool. The master suite has an elaborate marble bathroom. This home is listed at $4.5 million. After the jump, the perfect setting to read an Anne Rice novel.

Harrah's Opens A New Hotel In New Orleans

harrahsHarrah's New Orleans Hotel is now officially open. The 26-story, 450-room luxury hotel hopes to lure new tourists back to New Orleans. The new hotel is located near the Harrah's casino, the French Quarter and attractions along the Mississippi River. On one side of the hotel tower, Harrah's new Fulton Street promenade offers restaurants and entertainment including both a restaurant and a jazz club created by celebrity chef Todd English. Guest rooms average 450 square feet and have oversized baths, closets and sitting areas as well as high-definition television. The all-suite 26th floor has butler service. It's not exactly what I think of when I think New Orleans hotels but the view from the 26th floor is probably pretty gorgeous.

Tales of the Cocktail

We write about plenty of wine and food festivals but how about an event just for the cocktail. Tales of the Cocktail runs July 19-23 at the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans and centers around the mixed drink. There are seminars, discussions, dinner pairings, bartending lessons and plenty of cocktail parties.   Carson Kressley, star of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," NPR's Kitchen Sisters and chefs Aaron Sanchez, Marcus Samuelsson and Suvir Saran of New York  are among the presenters.  The winner of the Tales of the Cocktail competition for this year has also been announced. Judges chose from 19 recipes using Bacardi Superior Rum, selecting Michael Brewer's drink which includes rum, lemon juice, lime juice, orange juice, pineapple juice, cilantro and avocado. The Drink in History package includes access to all seminars, cocktail events, the bartender's bash and a private mixology seminar with Marvin Allen of the Carousel Bar. This package sells for $275 and rooms at the Hotel Monteleone are selling for $88 per night during the event.
