Michael Kors Darrington Flap Hobo, Handbag of the Day

The Darrington Flap Hobo ($895) by Michael Kors combines a rustic aesthetic with golden hardware for a bag that says, "I can be worn daily and the wear and tear that you thrown at me will only enhance my overall look", while gold accents bring a shiny and stylish touch to offset the handbag's dark palette. The color is ideal for Fall and can serve as a great anchor to your Fall ensembles. It features an adjustable shoulder strap, allowing you to be hands free and wear it across your chest or on your shoulder. There are two exterior buckled pockets (handy for cell phones and keys) and a large buckled flap for a secured closure. Dimensions: 12 1/2"H x 16"W x 4 1/2" D.

Rivet Detail Tote Handbag
The Rivet Detail Tote by Michael Kors is a blend of toughness and femininity. A girly shade of deep plum purple contrasts nicely with goldtone hardware and rows of rivets running up either side and laced through to the top. A pair of large leather tassels decorate the front, a large goldtone logo dangles off to one side, and large gold rings connect the braided double handles. Neutral logo-printed lining showcases a 3-compartment interior (two open ones divided by a zip-close center) and pockets galore. Also comes with a key fob, £425.

High Style in Sun-Drenched Climates

Fashion historian Caroline Rennolds Milbank examines the history of warm weather wear in a beautifully illustrated new book called Resort Fashion from Rizzoli. From the first "beach pajamas" designed by Coco Chanel and Lilly Pulitzer and Pucci prints, to sailor stripes and the Kennedys' laid back yachtsman style, to Michael Kors and Tory Burch's beach-inspired designs and of course the evolution of the swimsuit, Milbank crosses continents and generations. The seven chapters break the looks down by category: At Sea, Stripes, Prints, White, Playclothes, Summer Dress and Bathing Suits, with photos from destinations like Palm Beach, Montego Bay and St. Tropez by legends like Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Norman Parkinson, Helmut Newton, and Scavullo.

The Fashion Statement: What is One Luxury You Won't Give Up?

Here at the spring shows in Bryant Park, there's a lot of waiting. Waiting in lines to get in. Waiting for shows to start. Waiting to exit.

We decided to put all that waiting to good use and ask fashion show attendees what is the one luxury they won't do without, even in tough times. What came back was answers more varied than the colors of spring, ranging from a BMW to a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

The majority chose little luxuries that had to with their person: manicures and pedicures, hair cuts, hair highlights, makeup and massages.

"Teeth bleaching!" offered Wendy Evankovitch, a pediatric dental assistant. "Chiropractor," said makeup artist Szilvia Varrs.

But there were some random answers, too. Nancy Mammana, who owns Rock Media Entertainment, won't do without dance lessons. Zachary Weiss, an intern for publicist Lizzie Grubman, said it was his needlepoint belt by Tucker Blair he splurged on recently. He was wearing it today.

Sadly, clothing was not the first word rolling off tongues, an indication of how difficult a time the industry has had lately. Accessories have had it a little easier.

Violet Xie, a fashion student, said vintage jewelry is her one shopping allowance because it can pump up a simple ensemble.

"I love handbags," said Jordan Brodsky, a college grad looking for a job in fashion, sporting a bright blue number from Michael Kors. "No matter how much weight you gain, they'll always fit you."

What about you? What is the one luxury you won't give up?

Gunmetal Zuma Satchel, Handbag of the Day

This is one of those bags that I both love and hate at the same time. I love that it's so slouchy and distressed, and I love the uniqueness of the knots in the design, but I hate that it looks like it was slopped together in some kind of emergency or something. It's the Zuma Satchel by Michael Kors, shown here in gunmetal, and there isn't much else to say about this one other than it has silvertone hardware, a double-zip top, and a hanging logo tag (which makes it look a little like luggage I think). $995

Michael Kors Skorpios Hobo, Handbag of the Day

Everybody loves a good hobo bag, and this one by Michael Kors is no exception. Not sure why it's called "Skorpios" (I'm sure I'm missing something obvious so if you have an idea feel free to let me know in the comments) but it's an attractively simple bag, featuring a large ring that flops over the framed top on a braided leather strap and a matching single braided leather handle attached with smaller gold rings. $995

I'm thinking maybe the way the ring hangs over to the front of the bag is reminiscent of a scorpion's tail???

Michael Kors Runway Clutch, Handbag of the Day

Woo! I love this pink. How can you not? Hot pink has been popular for ages and here it is done up nice and classy by Michael Kors in sleek patent leather and contemporary silver hardware. The top is framed and opens on a hinge, with nothing more than a tiny logo embossed on the top closure. And if neon isn't your thing (although you might want to take a look at the "Day Glo Orange" and "Acid Yellow" options before you decide) there's also more subdued "Espresso" and even a python skin option. Runway Clutch: $595.

Michael Kors Large Hobo, Handbag of the Day

This smooth, supple, calfskin leather handbag can currently be pre-ordered on Nordstroms.com as part of the Resort 2009 collection from Michael Kors. Its slouchy, hobo style and sunny colors in either coral or white shine with a gleaming gold-toned chain detail. Large but not wide, unless packed to the hilt, it lends itself to a myriad of tasks or stands alone as a fantastic accessory to any outfit. The suede-lining makes it touchable and luxurious inside and out for $1,395. (18" x 10 1/2" x 5" with 10" strap drop)

The Classicist: Summer of Steve McQueen

Filed under: Books, Men's Style, The Classicist

Super cool movie star Steve McQueen was without a doubt one of the most stylish men of all time. As we've noted in the past, his rugged sportiness, authentic masculinity and innate good taste have inspired countless fashion designers, not to mention scores of other actors who followed in his wake. McQueen fans of all sorts have a lot to celebrate this summer: there are two major new books on the "King of Cool" coming out, as well as a special McQueen tribute edition Ford Mustang, while the star's famous 1970 Porsche, worth an estimated $2 million, is going up for auction.

The first book just went on sale: Steve McQueen: A Life in Pictures edited by Yann Brice Dherbier (Pavilion, $40). The mix of classic and less well-known images of the style icon is artfully put together, but what struck us most about the book was its large format, showing details that you just don't get in smaller versions (see the gallery for a preview). For instance, in this cover image you can clearly see that McQueen is wearing a classic Baracuta jacket from England - which by the way are still sold here at Ben Silver in Charleston, one of the best men's clothiers in the country.

Equally striking and noticeable due to the impressive scale are the identifiable images which have clearly influenced designers like Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors who have built whole collections and ad campaigns around the King of Cool. Lauren in particular is a well-known McQueen fanatic. The index to Michael Gross' brilliant biography of the designer, Genuine Authentic, contains no less than six separate entries for the actor.

Gross writes that Lauren staged shoots based on McQueen's movies - his favorite film is said to be 1968's The Thomas Crown Affair - sometimes with himself in the starring role, and hung photos of the actor in both his houses and stores. If you look closely enough at the photos in Dherbier's book and compare them to Lauren's designs you can see where he copied sweaters, jackets, details on suits, even the carelessly elegant way McQueen always wore his clothes.

The other book, Unforgettable Steve McQueen hasn't been published yet - we'll update you on that when the time comes - but it features a foreword by another McQueen wannabe: Brad Pitt. We'd say he's making a good start at filling the King of Cool's shoes, but he's got a ways to go yet.

Michael Kors Braided Satchel, Handbag of the Day

This Braided Satchel bag by Michael Kors makes me think of wicker furniture, which is a good thing since I associate wicker with outdoor summer days and timeless appeal. Made of braided corn husks (which I think is really cool), the old fashioned appeal gets a serious modern upgrade with gold metal hardware and metallic grained leather trim and handles. Generously sized and in a nice, natural, and bright neutral shade, it has a canvas lining and 3 interior pockets. A perfect everyday bag for toting around all your daily essentials. $538

Michael Kors Beverly Gator Watch Clutch, Handbag of the Day

This bright bag from Michael Kors definitely scores some points for originality. A simple alligator-embossed leather clutch in a fresh lime green is dressed up with a masculine, gold-tone...watchband? I guess it is better than skulls and bracelet charms, but where is this taking us? If leftover watch parts can find a home on high-end handbags, can cuff links and tie tacks be far behind? It is a lovely bag that probably would have been best left unadorned. $3,000.

Michael Kors Sutton Patchwork Clutch, Handbag of the Day

Michael Kors is big on the buckles these days and I can see the attraction. The gold-tone hardware adds a dash of shine while giving the appearance of being completely functional. Of course, this big gold buckle is purely decorative but it looks lovely with a wide patent leather strap threaded through. The bag itself looks pretty simple, but there are actually three different leathers involved in the patchwork pattern - patent, matte and suede. The bag fastens with a magnetic snap and is also available in a brown/black version. $395.

Michael Kors Buckle Front-Flap, Handbag of the Day

Rich chocolate suede accented with a giant gold-tone buckle, this bag is stylish and smart. Trimmed with black patent leather and tonal topstictching, the business-like bag gets a dash of flash from a slim gold strip on the rolled patent handle. Made in Italy, the bag is on sale for $697.

Michael Kors Moroccan Basket Tote, Handbag of the Day

Michael Kors' Moroccan Basket Tote is a lovely hybridization between the classically casual woven handbag style and a more upmarket bag. Made of rich chocolate brown leather, the bag is accented with circular links and gold studs. The tote has a rounded shape, allowing it to expand as needed, and has a small snap closure concealed just inside the bag's reinforced leather trim, with an internal zip pocket for extra security. This is a style that would work equally well with jeans or a summery, tan business suit. Price: $995.

Michael Kors Vintage Rose Saddle Flap Bag , Handbag of the Day

This small Michael by Michael Kors Vintage Rose Saddle Flap Bag has an updated western look to it. The chocolate brown leather and brass studs are very western, as is the saddle bag-style flap, but the cutout flower design has a modern feel and gives the bag a youthful, casual appeal. It would look great with jeans. The bag measures only 11"W x 7"H x 2 1/2"D and has a 9" drop from the strap, which is not adjustable. It is also available in black. Price: $248.
