Laura Mercier: Celebrity-Inspired Luxury Cosmetics

Laura Mercier
Laura Mercier
is the cosmetic, bath and body and fragrance collection by French-born makeup artist Laura Mercier, and a nominee for a Readers' Choice Award in Best Cosmetics Line.

Laura Mercier began her career as a painter, but soon began painting with cosmetics as a personal makeup artist to celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts, and Juliette Binoche. She gained notoriety early on for her artist's eye and her ability to accentuate a person's natural beauty.

She moved to New York in 1985 to launch American Elle, where she worked on advertising campaigns for all the best retailers and expanded her portfolio to include a vast array of publications. After working with Elizabeth Arden and Chanel, she moved on to personal clients, including collaborating with Madonna for her print, TV and film looks. In 1996, she developed Laura Mercier Cosmetics, based on the idea that there should be a classic, always-current look unaffected by season. The products were created specifically to meet the needs of her clients, including their skin types and color preferences.

Diamonds in the Rain

Sandra Bullock at the 2010 Golden GlobesThe Golden Globe Awards are a pleasure to watch, but not nearly as much fun as the preceding red carpet. It's there that we get to see the gowns, the tuxes, and, of course, the jewelry.

Whatever, dresses. Let's talk about diamonds.

The winning ladies of the Golden Globes were:
  • Sandra Bullock (pictured) for The Blind Side
  • Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia
  • Mo'Nique for Precious
  • Julianna Margulies for The Good Wife
  • Toni Collette for The United States of Tara
  • Drew Barrymore for Grey Gardens
  • Chloë Sevigny for Big Love
Now, let's have a look at their jewelry, shall we? Designers of winners' jewelry included Everlon, Fred Leighton, Buccellati, Lorraine Schwartz and Neil Lane. While we weren't too sure about all of everyone's accessories (we could have done without the costumey details on Drew's dress and drabness of Meryl's belt), the jewelry this year was stunning and demure -- a far cry from last year's statement pieces.

In truth, we miss the giant stones and enormous diamond-encrusted flowers, but we've always had a taste for decadence and excess. The good news is that for those of us not fortunate enough to buy (or be loaned) 40 carat earrings, this year's styles are far easier to emulate for a fraction of the price.

Special thanks to the Diamond Information Center.

Stars Auction Clothes For Haiti

We've already covered a variety of stars donating money to help the victims of the Haiti quake and now stars are holding auctions to raise money. Meryl Streep, Gerard Butler, Amy Poehler and Olivia Wilde are donating their outfits worn at the 67th Golden Globes. The outfits will be auctioned off by Artists for Peace and Justice and sold to the public on eBay.

In other auction news, Serena Williams has set herself the goal of raising $92,000 in 92 days through an online auction of her personal clothing and memorabilia to raise money for Haiti earthquake victims, as well as schools and charities. Her eBay auction began Monday with items and includes so far tennis outfits, sneakers and a Phoenix Suns jersey signed by Steve Nash. She plans to put up new items each week.

Friday's "Hope for Haiti" telethon will be hosted by George Clooney, Wyclef Jean and Anderson Cooper. Christina Aguilera, Bono, Alicia Keys, Sting and Justin Timberlake have signed on to perform and Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts have signed up to answer phones.

Devil Wears Prada Costumes on eBay

It seems a bit odd to call designer outfits "costumes," but once they have been used on film that is what they become. There are several pieces from the movie The Devil Wears Prada up for auction on eBay to benefit the nonprofit group "Dress for Success," which helps economically disadvantaged women start on the road to success by preparing them for interviews and other career opportunities. This Donna Karan two-piece crepe suit was worn by Meryl Streep/"Miranda" in the film. No size is indicated and it comes with a certificate of authenticity. The current bid price is over $500, but the auction doesn't close until July 3rd, so there is plenty of time for that number to go higher. And, for a good cause, why not?

An alternative source for movie merchandise is the Devil Wears Prada boutique that Deidre mentioned a few days ago.
