Mercedes Downsizes and Upgrades the S63 AMG

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Bigger is better, right? That's been the prevailing wisdom in the automobile market, but consumers of luxury goods know better. Case in point: the newest Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG.

For the 2011 model, Mercedes has swapped out the enormous 6.2-liter V8 for a more efficient – and more powerful – 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 with direct injection and fuel-saving start-stop engine management, coupled to the company's latest multi-clutch transmission. The result is 571 horsepower instead of 518, a four-and-a-half second sprint to sixty and improved fuel economy. Now that's our kind of downsizing.

Mercedes Officially Releases Details on Updated S63/S65 AMG Power-Sedans

With over 700 lb-ft of torque on tap, the Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG could very well be capable of bending time, which could explain why the German automaker has waited a couple of months to reveal the full details on its pair of flagship performance luxury sedans. Unveiled in April at the Shanghai motor show, the pair of AMG-tuned luxury vehicles offer either a 525hp V8 in the S63 or a 612hp twin-turbo V12 in the top-of-the-top-of-the-line S65. Mercedes has also packed the pair with all manner of electronic systems to keep all that power in check, plus the latest luxury and performance touches to distinguish this pair from the rest of the line. Although American pricing has yet to be announced, sales begin in the U.S. this coming September, while European prices indicate that these aren't for the everyman: €115,700 will get you behind the wheel of a short-wheelbase S63, another €6k will score you the long-wheelbase version while the S65 fetches a suitably monstrous €185,900.

Mercedes-Benz Debuts Updated Flagship S63 and S65 AMG in Shanghai show

It's a sign of the times if we've ever seen one that Mercedes has chosen to debut its new flagship sedans at the Shanghai motor show this year. The German automaker has given the top-of-the-line S-Class a mild update for the 2010 model year, and has just released details and photos of the pair of AMG-tuned sport models at the peak of the range.

Like the rest of the line-up, the S63 AMG and S65 AMG get a new grille, LED lighting, revised front bumper and rear bumper with an integrated diffuser to help it stay glued to the road on those de-restricted Autobahns. The interior has likewise been updated, incorporating the full array of electronic systems to make driving these muscular luxury sedans a breeze. But it's under the hood where these two behemoths really shine: the S63 packs a 525-horsepower V8, while the S65's party piece is a twin-turbocharged V12 with over 600 horsepower. Both are aided by Mercedes' latest torque vectoring system to help get the giants around the corner. Although this is probably the last concern of someone buying a machine like either of these, but emissions and fuel consumption have been improved on both models by a meager 3%. Pricing has not yet been announced, but the previous models which these replace sold for approximately $130,000 and $200,000 respectively, so expect similar pricing on the 2010 versions, which you can view in the pair of image galleries below.
