Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Double Rétrograde Watch

Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Double Rétrograde Watch
I quite like this new Masterpiece Collection Double Retrograde watch from Swiss watch maker Maurice Lacroix. Offered in steel or a limited edition of 50 pieces in 18k pink gold, this watch is quite large for a dressy piece at 46mm wide. Maurice Lacroix points out that its automatic mechanical movements is among the widest on the market. Using the calibre ML 191 movement, the watch has a lot of functions laid-out in a rather attractive manner. The dial has the time, with a retrograde dial on the top with a GMT hand, and a retrograde dial below indicating the date. On the left of the dial is an inset subsidiary seconds dial, while a power reserve indicator is placed to the right. This is one of the most handsome Maurice Lacroix watches I have seen in a while.

The dial is in solid silver, done in a deep blue color which matches the gold or steel tones on the dial well. I like how the brand was able to mix function with minimalism cleverly for the dial design. The watches will be matched to black crocodile strap lined with calfskin leather.

Maurice Lacroix Pontos Chronographe Réctangulaire Full Black Watch & Their Bering Strait Expedition

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Sports

Maurice Larcroix is now sponsoring kiteboarding. It is like surfing, only you have a large kite that pulls you across the water. It can be dangerous on many levels. The Swiss luxury watch brand is sponsoring "The Bering Strait Expedition." During which, two athletes, Geza Scholtz and Troy Henkels, attempted to set a few new world records by kiteboarding across the Bering Strait? Why? Well just to see if they can. This was in July, and I think the brand will continue to work with kiteboarders in the future - "Maurice Lacroix, choice watch for windy water sports!"

Maurice Lacroix fitted the kiteboarders with their new Pontos Chronograph Rectangulaire Full Black watch (which I previously wrote about here). Not exactly an "extreme sports watch, but not too bad as matched to their outfits. It was a great endurance test for the timepieces as well. Seeing if they could put up with the water, wind, and potential shock. The watches also proved to be good timing instruments of the kiteboarders. Not my first choice but they did make without failure. The watch itself is in a special ceramic black coating over steel case with a rubber strap. Not too large at 38mm wide, and it contains a Swiss ETA 7750 chronograph automatic movement. We will see what other bouts of harshness Maurice Lacroix can put their timepieces through next!

Maurice Lacroix Divina Temptation Watches Revisited

maurice lacroix temptation watches
With Bulgari focusing heavily on their new Serpenti line of snake themed watches, it gave me a chance to think about some of the other snake themed watches that came out in the last few years. I always appreciated the artistic look of the Maurice Lacroix Divina Temptation line of limited edition watches (even though I wondered about who really bought them). They even used snakes in their ads pretty well. Maurice Lacroix is not being targeted by Bulgari, as the Italian brand has done snake themed watches way in the past. Bulgari clearly did a better job with naming the watches, as their Serpenti collection of watches and jewelry, by its name, should clearly resonate as having a reptilian look. What is up with how Maurice Lacroix names its watches? Though for many, these watches will be more wearable than the Bulgari pieces - though you could easily view both as ugly. The "Temptation" part of the name likely relates to the snake being the 'bad guy' in the Adam & Eve story. Poor python.

The women's watch has a 24.5mm wide case in 18k white gold and comes in four types. Each has a collection of jewels that make up the snake image on the polished solid silver dial. The watch face itself is not exactly easy to read, but that isn't the point. There is a Swiss quartz movement inside the watch as well. There are four versions of the watch. A green toned version with rubies and green tsavorites, a brown version with garnets and blue sapphires (both of these are limited to just 10 pieces). There is also a red toned version with diamonds, rubies, and pink sapphires, and finally an orange toned version with orange and yellow sapphires, and rubies. These final two versions are each limited to 30 pieces each. Originally released a few years ago, there are actually still some of them out there. Prices are about $60,000 - $100,00 each.

Maurice Lacroix Classique Phases de Lune Watch

For 2010 comes a classic-esque style watch from Maurice Lacroix - still with enough brand character to make it stand out a bit. Maurice Lacroix takes the traditional triple calendar look and adds rounded hands and a unique modernity to it. I can't say that I am convinced of its aesthetic value, but it is interesting in a very "right now" sense. A decade from now I fear a design like this will looked dated.

The case is 40mm wide in either steel, two-tone with steel and gold. Crystal is sapphire and the case is water resistant to 30 meters. Functions include the time (with central seconds), date around the dial, windows for the month and the day of the week and the month. There is also a moon phase indicator. For a watch that is only 40mm wide the elements on the dial look too small. Like Maurice Lacroix wanted to miniaturize the complications. Movement is the Swiss automatic ML caliber 37. Look for it soon if you like what you see.

Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Lune Retrograde Watch

maurice lacroix masterpiece lune retrograde watch
The last few years have seen watch maker Maurice Lacroix experiment with creating that perfect design which lies smack in the middle between classic watches (looks from makes such as Breguet) and refined futurism. It is up for debate whether they have achieved this effort, but the Masterpiece Lune Retrograde is certainly a step in the right direction. Alas, you'll see classic elements made modern. Liberal use of sharp angles and skeletonization replace traditional decorations such as dial engraving gently sweeping edges.

I can't wait to see this 46 mm monster in action. Very few "classy" watch are born in this diameter. The new in-house made ML 152 movement, offers some useful complications. Included are a calendar with the date and day, moon phase under a textured semi-transparent material, power reserve indicator, and time (of course). The little touches on the watch are what make it standout. For example, the applied Arabic numerals are finely done, the gear-like crown has a great industrial quality to it, and the hands are just right to be both classic and modern. The refined skeletonized utilitarian facade never gets in the way of a classy demeanor as well. Notice the adjustment pushers integrated together in a cluster beneath the crown on the side of the case. Overall, the Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Lune Retrograde is is a fine example of modern innovation and traditional sentiment all rolled together in one watch. Look for the official release at Baselword soon.

Maurice Lacroix Jours Retrograde Watch

If last season was the time of brown watches, this year seems to be the time of the gray. Especially for Maurice Lacroix, their last few watches have been stately gray watches that speak of quiet luxury. The Masterpiece Jours Retrogrades has a a retrograde day indication. A small hand at 6 o'clock moves one position further to the right each day to indicate the current weekday and when reaches the end of the scale it goes back to the start. The watch has a 40 mm stainless steel case with a sapphire crystal and a display back. It uses the hand-decorated automatic caliber ML 102 with 22 jewels, blued steel screws, Incabloc shock protection, a polished steel pallet and escapement wheel, a Glucydur balance, and a skeletonized rotor. The hand can manually be repositioned without dmaging the movement. It has a silver dial with hand-applied Roman numerals.

Maurice Lacroix Baselworld Preview, a New Masterpiece Le Chronographe

The watch Maurice Lacroix is taking to Baselworld is a new version of the Masterpiece Le Chronographe in stainless steel using the ML 106-2 manufacture movement, which was developed by Maurice Lacroix' technical department last year. The watch uses a reinterpretation of the chronograph sequence, which Lacroix has sought a patent for, to help prevent incorrect time or date if the watch receives a shock. The watch also features a stop second so that when the crown is pulled out, the balance halts and the seconds hand stops so the watch can be set accurately to the second. The watch has a 45mm case with front and back sapphire crystals. The dial is sterling silver with an anthracite finish and Superluminova coating. Compare this watch to the original Le Chronographe as seen on the Lacroix website, this is essentially a more masculine version and rugged looking version, swapping out the rose gold case and the white dial for something a little more in line with recent trends toward tough guy watches.
