The Classicist: The World's Greatest Luxury Yachts

Filed under: Yachts & Sailing, Books, The Classicist

In the rarefied world of mega yachts, the ultimate achievement is to have one designed by a certain Norwegian genius named Espen Oeino. The world's top star in naval architecture, Oeino's megabucks creations "combine the precision of fine machinery with indulgent finishes and the high-end amenities of a palace." When German luxury publisher teNeues opted to focus a volume in its amazing Luxury Toys series to the world's greatest yachts, it was quickly decided to dedicated the entire book to Oeino.

Luxury Toys: Mega Yachts showcases 20 of the Monaco-based Oeino's stellar creations accompanied by text from top yachting author Nick Jeffery, the most respected authority on luxury watercraft. Among the megayachts featured is Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's 413-ft. Octopus, the 8th largest yacht in the world and the second largest superyacht that is not owned by a head of state. The nine deck ship cost $200 million to build and has an annual operating budget estimated at $20 million.

Designed for self-sufficient long range cruising, the Octopus contains a wet dock for a 59-ft. tender and an equally large remotely-operated submarine that can descend to 2500 meters, a twin helicopter hangar and two helipads, countless giant antennae and a telescopic sonar, a cinema and music studio. Another Oeino creation featured in the book is the military-looking 233-ft. SKAT, pictured above, built by Lürssen of Bremen, Germany for Charles Simonyi, a former Microsoft software engineer and pioneering space tourist. The yacht features an elevator serving all four decks, a gymnasium, matching helicopter, and motorcycles with a special lift.

Lurssen Launches Sunflower Yacht

The Lurssen mystery project made its appearance last week and Superyacht Times has the pics. Not much is known about the 155-meter project (over 508 feet!) besides the name Sunflower (it is expected that it will be renamed when it is done). Yachtspotter has an interesting thread on the subject stating that she will be a royal yacht, perhaps the successor to Al Said because the yacht has a similar sandy color.

Lurssen Apoise Yacht

I think this is one of the most fantastic shots of a yacht I have ever seen. This is Lurssen's Apoise (formerly known as project Marlin) making her way down the Kiel Canal. The 67-meter (around 220 feet) yacht has been delivered to her owner.  She was designed by Espen Oeino to offer a lot of space without an ungainly length. There are six decks with four guest cabins with king size beds on the lower deck and the main deck includes the owners suite, the main salon with  a dining area and a  round glass elevator in the lobby. The bridge deck has another VIP cabin on the starboard side, a full beam salon and an interior/exterior dining area. On the upper deck there is a bar/gym and a large Jacuzzi. Apoise can hit a  top speed of 16 knots. Hopefully she'll make it to the charter market so we can get those all important interior shots.

Vitrivius Yacht

Those who appreciate the particular brand of yacht hotness embodies by the Wally Power yachts will probably love this brand new design project developed by Philippe Briand and Lürssen Yachts.  The 180-foot Vitruvius is made of Alustar, a material stronger than aluminum. The yacht can hit top speeds of more than 20 knots and cruises at 18 knots while using half as much fuel as a conventional yacht of the same size. The owner's suite is located midship and spans the width of the yacht. The boat can host 10 guests and the aft platform features a sunbathing area and plunge pool. Yachtfourms has more pictures of the design.
