Lufthansa's Flavors of India Contest

Your cooking skills could win you a trip to India. Lufthansa is running the Flavors of India contest that invites people to submit creative and exotic Indian-based recipes in order to win the Grand Prize – two round-trip tickets to India and a three-day, two-night stay at one of The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts, which are located throughout India.

The promotion is available to U.S. residents and entrants do not have to be aspiring chefs to register and participate in the "Flavors of India" contest. The first step is to register at www.lufthansa.com/FlavorsOfIndia, and enter a weekly raffle with prizes such as an iPad, fine china, food processors, $50 gift certificates to renowned Indian restaurants in the U.S. and more. Registration is open for the duration of the contest, from September 15, 2010 – November 15, 2010. Tell a few friends and you can earn points if they register at the site. The individual that secures the most new registrants will win one Lufthansa round-trip economy class ticket to India.

From now until October 25, 2010, chefs can submit an Indian recipe of their own creation to win the grand prize. From October 25 – November 15, 2010 recipes are up for voting on www.lufthansa.com/FlavorsOfIndia. Chef Surender Mohan who hails from The Leela, Mumbai will review every recipe submission, and whomever created the dish that he designates as his personal favorite will receive an iPad.

Lufthansa Enlists the Ritz-Carlton to make Gourmet Airplane Food

You don't often hear "gourmet" and "airplane food" in the same title, but that's because Lufthansa hasn't teamed up with the chefs of The Ritz-Carlton until now!

Naturally, creating meals that can be mass produced and still impress at 30,000+ feet is quite the culinary challenge. Some of the best chefs in the industry, including Denver's Andrés Jiménez, New York's Thomas Surowka and Jacques Sorci, DC's David Serus, San Francisco's Nathan Beriau, Boston's Clayton Van Hooijdonk, and Ritz-Carlton Vice President, Culinary Corporate Chef George McNeill teamed up to create the finest airline dining experience we've ever seen, and they held an event at the NYC loft home (above) of Barry Appelman (father of the AOL Instant Messenger) and Ildiko Sragli to kick off the collaboration and allow guests to sample the culinary masterpieces!

The First Class and Business Class menus on Lufthansa flights will now include items like:

Omelette with Mushroom Ragout, Potato Rösti, and Bacon
Smoked Trout Mousse with Poached Leeks and Whole Grain Mustard Vinaigrette
Seared Cod in Artichoke and Carrot Broth with Roasted Garlic
Spinach Stuffed Gnocchi with sautéed Cremini Mushrooms and Pine Nuts in a Vegetable Butter Sauce

Lufthansa Is Building A Private Jet Fleet

In 2005, Lufthansa started their private jet program, partnering with NetJets. Things must be going well Lufthansa has announced their plans to have a private jet fleet ready for summer 2008. The company will receive seven private jets from Cessna soon and will continue to work with private jet companies. They plan to offer four different categories of planes ranging from four to 12 seats. The number of private jet flights for Lufthansa rose 26% last year. The German airline will be the first European airline to develop its own fleet of business jets.

The Best First Class Meals for When You Fly

There are many people in the world who fly frequently and as such are often subject to airline food, despite it's nasty reputation of being nothing but reheated cardboard. Some airlines, however, are seeking to change that in a major way for their first class passengers -- even to the extent for some of having a chef on board (Gulf Airlines) and serving exotic gourmet dishes.

Among others Singapore Airlines offers a choice of Dom Perignon or Krug champagne, several airlines serve caviar as appetizer, and Malaysia Airlines serves their meals on fine china. Would you (or do you) choose your airline based on the first class meal options?

More Extravagant Plans For The A380

We've heard of some extravagant plans for the Airbus A380 before but Lufthansa Technik has a bold new idea for their VIP version of the plane, an interior driving range for golf practice. According to an article in the Sunday Times, the deluxe private A380 will cost over £200m and will include en-suite bedrooms and a private dining room. Lufthansa Technik believes there are about 20 customers in the world with the desire for the ultimate private plane including such big spenders as the Sultan of Brunei and Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, a Riyadh-based investment tycoon. Other details of this dream plane include wireless internet, 50-inch plasma television screens, mood lighting to minimize jet lag, a mini gym and a sauna. It seems like my prediction over a year ago of an in-flight Jacuzzi wasn't too far off. You've got a little time to raise the necessary cash, the earliest delivery slot for a VIP A380 is 2011 or 2012.

Design Q Airbus A319 Interior

I never tire of checking out what a whole lot of money does to a private jet. This latest one is from Design Q, an English design consultancy who has created a VIP interior for an Airbus A319 for a couple identified as family-conscious power couple in their thirties who travel as a family (PSFK thinks this sounds like the Beckhams and I have to agree). In designing for the individual client, Design Q creates a ‘Personality Map’ of the client's activities, styles and preferences. The result was an interior that integrates three basic needs: work, reset and play. There is an open-plan living area, lounger-style seating with a large projection screen, a bar and a central island which holds drinks and glasses. The upper cabin wall have ambient lighting. A small room in the back allows sleeping space and there is a meeting space for business. In the rear section there are seats for the entourage. This jet interior like the BMW one we covered last week will be on display at the Aircraft Interiors EXPO in Hamburg.
