Gold: How to Shine in Style

Filed under: Apparel, Handbags, Jewelry, Shoes

Gold

Gold is a color that exudes opulence and contributes sophistication to an outfit. Whether its packaged through jewelry, a handbag or a piece of clothing, a touch of gold can instill elegance without being ostentatious.

As with any prominent color or print, to maximize its impact and make a fashionable yet classic statement, less is more. Otherwise, an abundance of gold can easily cross the line over to Vegas showgirl.

Levi's Workwear by Billy Reid

The Levi's denim brand is partnering with men's fashion designer Billy Reid to unveil a limited-edition, high-end collection this fall. Levi's Workwear by Billy Reid will be shown off at the Bloomingdale's store at 59th Street and Lexington Avenue in New York City, along with Reid's boutique in lower Manhattan as part of the Fashion's Night Out activities on September 10. The full collection will be available for purchase at select Bloomingdale's stores and all six Billy Reid store locations and online. This is the third year that Levi's has teamed with the winner of GQ's "Best New Menswear Designers in America" project to create a special collection.

The Levi's Workwear by Billy Reid collection updates working man's gear with fashion forward details. The line includes ten pieces: a canvas "apron" tool bag, a re-tooled 501 jean, a pair of sweatshirts, a red T-shirt, a denim shirt, a twill hunting coat, an oxford shirt, a 505 work pant and the heavy wool black trucker jacket shown above. The cotton jersey, crewneck pieces feature the Calabama graphic, a play on the mingling of aesthetics between the Levi's California-based headquarters and Alabama, the state Reid calls home. Prices range from $45 for a Calabama cotton crew t-shirt to $295 for the heavy twill Hunting Coat with detachable apron.

Rare Old Levi Strauss Jeans Hit eBay

As I mentioned when we were looking at the rare items in the world, old Levi's jeans are worth a lot of money. According to the Guinness Book of World Records the most valuable jeans are an original pair of Levi Strauss & Co 501 jeans aged over 115 years old which were sold to a collector in Japan for $60,000 through eBay in 2005. So it's big news that another pair of old Levi's have hit eBay. The seller reports that the rather dusty jeans were found in a mine in the Rand Mining District, on the Mojave Desert,. California. They are covered in candlewax from the candles the miner was using to light the tunnel he was working in and were found with a paper bag with the name of a mercantile store which operated between 1895 and 1898 in the town of Randsburg. The pants have a buckle back with suspender buttons and cloth label indicating they are size W34 x L33. The auction ends today and was over $11,000 last time I checked.

Levis® Vintage XX First Blue Rigid Jeans

Styles may come and go but Levi's seem to manage to weather the vicissitudes of trends, falling in and out of fashion but never disappearing. Taking a page from luxury jeansmakers, the original 501s get a boost into the world of premium denim through the use of nine ounce Japanese denim that is hand dyed using methods that recreate the process from the original jeans. The Levis® Vintage XX First Blue Rigid Jeans have the original cinchback style used in 501s and come with a special totebag. They sell for around $570 and will be released at the end of September.

Warhol Factory x LEVI'S x Damien Hirst Book

Last night I popped over to the Fred Segal store in Santa Monica to check out the Warhol Factory x Levi's x Damien Hirst pop-up store. The small store within a store will be open for two months. The store features items from the denim collection, which feature jeans, jackets, t-shirts and shorts that feature some of Damien Hirst's favorite symbols such as crystal skulls, multicolored dots and crosses. The clothing starts at around $120 for the colorful skull T-shirts. The little pop up store is done up in silver with two examples of paint covered Levis hanging behind glass. Levi's documented the Hirst collaboration in a 224-page glossy book. The book includes a foreword by Interview's past editor Ingrid Sischy, an interview with Damien Hirst and fashion photography featuring Vincent Gallo. The book sells for $200 for the hardbound book or $300 for the book with a plexiglass and metal display box. My pictures from last night are in the gallery below.

iPod Jeans from Levis

We knew about the launch of the iPod Jeans from Levi Strauss a few months ago, but thanks to Engadget, we finally know what they look like. The jeans have an iPod docking link attached to a red ribbon wire that is hidden in a side pocket, and a small control unit is built into a higher, hip-height pocket, offering the only real advantage over simply putting your iPod into a pocket of jeans you already own. A retractable - and hopefully detachable - headphone unit is included. Each pair is said to be €199.99 ( $257), but our guess is that you'll have to pay extra for dry cleaning and other special treatment, since these are probably no washing machine friendly.
