Ralph Lauren Fall 2011 Collection: NY Fashion Week (with Video)

Ralph Lauren Fall 2011 Collection presented during NY Fashion Week

Today, Ralph Lauren proved exactly why he is in a class by himself. The Ralph Lauren Fall 2011 Collection presented during NY Fashion Week, was timeless, glamorous and dramatic. "It was a masterpiece," André Leon Talley, Contributing Editor to Vogue, raved to Luxist after the show. "It was unmistakably Ralph Lauren. It was a simple masterpiece. He is unstoppable in his sense of taking his classics and giving them new twists and new drama."

Much of the collection was influenced by Chinese fashions, such as a black glossy silk illusion sweater dress, a jade silk panne velvet wrap dress and a red silk shantung embroidered smoking jacket that was shown under a black cashmere cocoon coat trimmed with long hair shearling.

The collection also included glossy smoking jackets, silk embroidered shearling coats, tuxedo jackets, velvet quilted jackets and pinstripe jackets paired with matching vests and trousers. A burgundy silk velvet wrap smoking jacket over a white cotton wing collar formal shirt with black sable tuxedo trousers was particularly striking. Several evening dresses were embroidered and beaded while many had an Art Deco feel.

Ralph Lauren's Asian inspiration was explained by his son David, who is the Senior Vice President, Advertising, Marketing and Corporate Communications for Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. "This past year he traveled to China," Lauren told Luxist. "It was his first trip there and he was inspired by what he saw. The future of our company is very much going to be expanding in China over the next couple of years. It has been in the air everywhere we turn. He is very inspired. For him it was a trip he took through a Ralph Lauren lens and what he saw, which is very different from what exists there, or it even never existed there. It is his interpretation of a China that could and should be."

David Lauren and Lauren Bush Engaged

Fashion designer and niece of former President George W. Bush, Lauren Bush is now engaged to Ralph Lauren's son David. The NY Post reports that David Lauren got down on one knee at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The fashionable couple had met at the museum's annual Costume Institute Gala six years ago. Lauren Bush has a clothing line, Lauren Pierce (Pierce is her grandmother's maiden name). No word yet on an official wedding date but it should be in 2011. Will she become Lauren Lauren? We'll have to wait and see.

When you think of fashion week, you think of the big four-New York, London, Milan and Paris. That's the cities where the biggies like Marc Jacobs, Lanvin and Yves Saint Laurent unveil their collections. And press from major publications jump from city to city following this glittery pack.

But did you know there was a fashion week in Washington, D.C. last month? Don't laugh. There's another one going on right now in Houston. There's even one being held this week in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. According to various tallies on the Internet, about 140 fashion weeks take place each year. From places like Omaha and Kansas City to Warsaw and Zagreb, multiple fashion weeks are going on in the world at any one time. There's always fashion week somewhere.

Houston's getting some exposure thanks to some big names, Texas style. Lauren Bush staged the first fashion show for her year-and-a-half-old Lauren Pierce collection, (pictured below) a line that uses artisan and eco fabrics. George Sr. and Barbara Bush (pictured above) turned out for the event, proudly snapping pictures of their granddaughter from where they sat on the front row.

The FEED 2 BagWhy not send a little love to the needy this Valentine's Day? All you have to do is buy this Feed 2 Bag.

Feed Projects was founded in 2006 by George Bush's niece (and former fashion model) Lauren Bush and former World Food Program Communications Officer Ellen Gustafson. Each bag sold benefits hungry children around the world.

This particular version, the Feed 2 Bag, is running at a Valentine's Day discount of $85 (normally $100). All proceeds from the FEED 2 purchase go directly to the UN World Food Program and feed 2 children for an entire school year. People will see your bag and say "What's the 2?" and you can say "that's how many children I fed this year." You know, unless you have more children.
